Frozen sprouts taste weird. All sounds very basic and not very tasty.

No one cared and everyone mentioned how nice this year was as there was no pressure to finish it all as it had zero effort.

It was our turn to host and we wanted everyone to see our new house.

It really doesn't matter whats on your plate.

So everyone liked it, no one had issue yet you came here clearly knowing you will get negative responses (alongside normal ones)

Why need for that? If there was no issue??

Fuckitydoodah · 27/12/2022 16:25

I would be disappointed to be honest. If you were on a tight budget then fair enough, but if you usually pay for Xmas lunch out and money isn't an issue then it seems like a poor spread. I'd have liked a bit more veg choice and some trimmings like pigs in blankets. There's so much choice of ready made Christmas meal bits in the shops.

Shereturnsforonemore · 27/12/2022 16:26

curious what normal people would have thought about it

So why the thread?

Also, why no context in the opening post?

Ilovelurchers · 27/12/2022 16:26

It sounds fine to me! My sister in law went to a massive effort cooking loads of different elements to the meal, but admitted some parts were bought in ready made (the red cabbage for example - not sure what else and I don't really care) and it was all just really nice, and I would have been just as grateful if she had bought it all in....

I recently used frozen Yorkshire puddings for the first time and found them better than the usual ones I make, as did my family, so YANBU! Merry Christmas!

Are your visitors not "normal"😂

Nimbostratus100 · 27/12/2022 16:26

It sounds absolutly fine to me

Spect8 · 27/12/2022 16:28

How do guests know things are frozen? I presume you actually cook them before serving lol!

I did frozen roasts this year and they were a HIT! I did heat the pan with rapeseed oil and lots of butter and they turned out better than home made.

Frozen veg are great. No waste, no chopping, all of that. Carrots are the only exception they can go rubbery and floppy (oops it's the carrots I'm talking about...). I did a lovely cauli cheese using frozen cauli from Aldi. Turned out great also.

Nothing wrong with it, once it's cooked and piping hot etc.etc.

You did well OP, considering all the circumstances. Take a bow.

KatherineJaneway · 27/12/2022 16:28

No one cared and everyone mentioned how nice this year was as there was no pressure to finish it all as it had zero effort.

No one was going to tell you the truth to your face if it was bad were they.

I'd have eaten it for politeness but think you were lazy as fresh Sprouts and peeling some potatoes for roasting is hardly a difficult job.

someonecookmydinnerplease · 27/12/2022 16:28

So long as they weren't served frozen it's fine for a meal. It's not the stereotypical Christmas dinner but if i really wanted the traditional roast I'd just cook myself one over the following few days.

ComtesseDeSpair · 27/12/2022 16:29

Frozen roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings taste like cardboard so I’d be pretty disappointed. Low effort is fine if you don’t like cooking but there are so many nice ready made options available rather than cheap frozen shit.

Floralnomad · 27/12/2022 16:29

Did you seriously have frozen sprouts as the only veg , that in itself is revolting . I’ve got no comment about the alcohol selection as I don’t drink .

Revolting?!! Really?! Personally I love sprouts!

QuietYou · 27/12/2022 16:31

I'd eat it to be polite and make all the right noises but I wouldn't enjoy it.
Learn to cook, it's really not difficult.

Hellybelly84 · 27/12/2022 16:31

Perhaps the person is on a tight budget?
Did they want to relax at christmas so kept it very simple?
Did anyone else going to the meal offer to host or bring items?
Did anyone text/phone in advance and ask what the meal would be and could they chip in if they would like certain things?

I love sprouts too, shredded and fried up with pancetta. Not frozen and I assume boiled.

There's a bit of food snobbery going on here..... I'd love those people to do a blind taste test between properly cooked frozen stuff and home made.

Anyway, I am sure those posters will adamantly claim they can tell the difference from twenty paces. OK then, don't go anywhere frozen food is served (after cooking of course lol).

Many restaurants that are not high end buy in frozen and prepped stuff and desserts. What's the problem. Starve?

SquishyGloopyBum · 27/12/2022 16:33

Sounds utterly joyless. I get you wanted people to see the new house but really, you aren't in a position to host.

Mezmer · 27/12/2022 16:33

I wouldnt like it and the money thing is no excuse as you can buy fresh sprouts for 20p a bag and potatoes for not much more on Tesco’s before Xmas. However each to their own.

Haveagentlechristmas · 27/12/2022 16:34

I don't like using microwaves and I'm veggie.

But each to their own.

catsonahottinroof · 27/12/2022 16:34

I wouldn't have liked this meal but it would have been edible apart from the sprouts. The rest would depend on how much I liked the people hosting and how welcome they made me feel. So it could have been enjoyable overall, but if I was only attending out of a sense of obligation because I'd been invited then I'd be very disappointed. I'd also take into account the circumstances of the hosts in my judgements though, people with a lot of time and money and potential helpers I would judge more.
