I don't like Welsh people

Said to me, a Welsh person born in Wales, married to a Welsh man, with two welsh children.

By my own father?!

He and my mum are looking at moving houses, I was asking about where and he mentioned they were a looking more at a specific county further away from me. I asked if they'd consider my county as we see them quite a bit. My dad said that my county is too Welsh, and the main draw of the other county is that it's much more English and he fits in better with English people, Welsh people are a bit odd and he doesn't like them and wants to be surrounded by English people.

Told him to move to fucking England then! My mum said I overreacted but it was just quite a grim thing to say to be honest, made me look at him a bit different. They were visiting for Christmas Day and the whole atmosphere turned a bit after that and they left earlier than planned. AIBU to be pissed off?!

'But yes he wants to move to "little England" Pembs because he doesn't want to be around welsh people and that's what he loves about Pembs.'

Little England? You both sound as intolerant as each other tbh.

It’s a well known saying (in Wales/PEmbs anyway). OP hasn’t made it up.

It’s a commonly used turn of phrase, it’s not the op being intolerant. That area is recognisably more English than any other in Wales.

Pembrokeshire is very often referred to as Little England. It's not my description. To be honest I hate it, if you want to live in little England than live in England, don't move into Wales and destroy a beautiful county with a second home crisis and poverty for the locals.

Oh a commonly used turn of phrase, absolutely no negative connotations at all? Riiiight.

People buy second homes all over the place, not just Wales. 'Little England' again. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree..

@KimberleyClark , St Asaph is in Wales. As far as I know it always has been.

He's lived in Carmarthenshire for years, it's hardly heavily welsh speaking, my area is slightly more so but still we don't struggle as a mainly English speaking family. But yes he wants to move to "little England" Pembs because he doesn't want to be around welsh people and that's what he loves about Pembs.

Wanted to start explaining that's the main problems the actual Welsh people in Pembrokeshire are facing but didn't waste my breathe.

Tell him us Pembrokeshire people don’t like him either.

Someone's spoiling for a fight! I live in Pembrokeshire, it is called little England regularly even by the English that live here. As you can see in the OP, it doesn't offend English people but actually is what draws a lot of English people to it which rightly can offend welsh people. And yes, there are second home issues in a lot of areas but Pembrokeshire is heavily affected by this and has the highest levels of child poverty in Wales once housing costs are taken into account.

I get this treatment every time I go to France. I know they usually speak in English and only use French to piss off tourists.

GogLais · 27/12/2022 20:41

@lieselotte , you'll hear a lot of Welsh in Denbigh, but the place has a specific dialect, known locally as 'Denbigh Welsh'
The Flintshire accent sounds more like south merseyside.

LittleBowSheep · 27/12/2022 20:44

@Janiie, my god, you are really showing how ignorant and arrogant you are. It's not the OP calling Pembs 'Little England', that's how it's known locally, by both Welsh locals and English incomers. You really should check your facts before lashing out like that.

GogLais · 27/12/2022 20:58

@SemperIdem , I think we have words for most things. dictionary

I think that many people will use an english words for many things, because that's what they heard it called when they were growing up. (like saying fridge not rhewgell or television not teledu). You might be in a shop or bar and hear an exchange peppered with english words.

It's not because the words don't exist.

This.

I'm English/Scots married to a Welshman and the only prejudice and blatant racism I've experienced is from the Welsh towards the English.

Its unacceptable either way.

DH is Welsh, went to Oxbridge and a well-known public school in England. He has had the most breathtakingly unacceptable comments about the Welsh/ Wales made to his face by people who no doubt see themselves as well-bred, educated and polite.

Not having grown up in the UK I find anti-Welsh attitudes in some English people quite shocking - these seem to be socially acceptable which I find puzzling because the UK generally as a society is very sensitive about racism and discrimination. Unfortunately MN is a good example - threads about the Welsh language display a very toxic mixture of ignorance and hostility. I just don't get why.

OP your DF sounds irrational, I would worry about dementia.

Oh please , give him a pass, I assume he’s oldish and likes to winge? I would have laughed my head off and start to take the mickey out of him .Chill a little

Well just look at the title of this thread!

Anything that said in the title "I hate Indians" or "I hate Chinese people" would be zapped on the spot.

MinnieMountain · 27/12/2022 21:11

@Janiie it’s a linguistic boundary. Feel free to look it up rather than assuming people who use it are anti-English.

Lmao. There's many parts of Wales where you wouldn't be accepted because of your English parents. You're as Welsh as Prince William.

That’s fair. I had the impression that due to the linguistic oppression, Welsh didn’t necessarily have a Welsh word for more modern terms, or some words had been appropriated for more modern usage eg archfarchnad for supermarket when it would have meant cathedral.

My child goes to a Welsh speaking school and I’m restarting Welsh lessons in the new year. I learned at school but I think Welsh language teachers in the 90/00’s in Cardiff were fairly poor. So will hopefully be more in the know linguistically in a years time.

If she was born in wales and has lived there all her life I’d say she’s more Welsh than William.

would you say I’m Welsh as my parents are Welsh? But I was born in England and lived in England until I was 19yo, so I’d say I’m English. I think most Welsh people would also say I was English. Same but opposite for the OP.

I don’t think the English who have holiday homes there, pushing locals out, have found it to be negative. Quite the opposite.

I do find it fascinating how desperate to be offered a certain type of English person is.

Isn’t it shocking to find the inhabitants of nations oppressed, don’t much like England. Just shocking 🤨

Mrsorganmorgan · 27/12/2022 21:36

The Welsh, oppressed? Gimme a break. Unless they find all the English tax money sent to their region oppressive, in which case we’ll gladly stop lol.

Maybe we should start taxing the English for all of the resources they take from Wales then?

If Yes Cymru have their way, that will be the case.

So the Welsh will keep their tax money and more importantly, their reservoirs that supply regions of England with water.

Lol.

Pembrokeshire is known as “Little England beyond Wales”. Not just Little England.
