Neighbour’s XL Bully

My neighbour has one of these dogs, which to be fair I always on a lead, but I’m so bloody scared of it when I am out walking my dog. He says it’s friendly and our dogs have sniffed each other and he while on leads, but I just feel so uneasy. I feel that if he slipped and that dog got loose it would be such a danger to everyone around. The area I live in is mainly families with young children and I just can’t understand why someone would get this kind of dog?

I understand all dogs can be aggressive, but all dogs don’t have this power and muscle that means they can easily kill!

The problem is the owners not the dogs. A knife in the wrong hands is dangerous, as is a very large powerful poorly trained dog. Dog ownership should be more regulated in urban areas. Those denying this is even an issue aren't helping.

I agree to some extent but if the basic makeup of the dog you are working with is unstable it does not matter who trains the dog. Experienced trainers would not own one of these dogs. The last two bull breeds the rescue I'm involved with homed ended up attacking small dog and the second knocked a woman over, attacked her and broke her hip. Huge insurance claim. Those were both owners who thought they were experienced. Every bull breed I have assessed I have recommended PTS as I cannot guarantee any history and could not forgive myself if a child was harmed.

LittleDonkeyKong · 26/12/2022 22:50

Do you realise that according to the Kennel club the dog that has the most attacks to its name in the UK is the labrador?

Heartbreaktuna · 26/12/2022 22:50

I would occasionally walk a neighbours mastiff pitbull cross. Enormous dog. Very reactive to other dogs. While out walking (leashed) a small lost terrier started following us. Got too close. The pitbull caught the dog in it's jaws and clapped down. Shook. Snapped the other dogs neck. Both I and other passers by were literally kicking the pitbull. It didn't even flinch. It was terrifying how quickly it happened. I would be scared too.

YANBU. That breed is an abomination. And dangerous. And do very ugly. Yuck.

And XL ''Bully's'' {Sic} are idiot magnets.

They are created for one thing only, to try and look intimidating, and to kill other dogs, and unstable enough to kill children and elderly .

As you say, Yuck.

7?

And how many people have been killed by humans in that time frame?

Jesus Christ, talk about priorities.

But we are talking about dogs on this thread

AlwaysLatte · 26/12/2022 22:52

I'd be worried too. I know any dog can snap but the ones that have been bred to have powerful locking jaws can do the most damage if they do. At least they are keeping it on a leash though.

No dog has locking jaws.

Silverbook · 26/12/2022 22:54

It’s always on the lead and shows no aggression. You just feel uneasy?

surely you are the issue not the dog.

Quincythequince · 26/12/2022 21:49

Why?
Should we ban forties too?
Alsatians?
Staffies?
Malinois shepherds?

Don’t be so ridiculous.

Yes, my neighbour's Belgian malinois jumped a fence across my garden and killed my other neighbour's cat a couple of years ago in front of my son.

Deffo should be banned.

Spectre8 · 26/12/2022 22:54

Someone down side road owned an xl bully and never on lease! There is park across the road and lots of dog walkers and it attacked a dog once. The second time it happened I was at gome and could see it from the window. No matter what various people including owner tries to do could not get it to release the small dog. Yet owner was screaming dont call the police, thankfully someone did and the dog was taken away never to be seen again.

There are children on that road who regularly play outside imagine if that had been a child that day.

If dogs are being bred to be aggressive or not stable either there are strict laws in place or a ban

Oh god @LittleDonkeyKong . Do I have to explain statistics to you? Of course they were because they were the highest registered breed:

'The top dog breed in the UK in 2021, as measured by number of registrations, was the Labrador Retriever breed. Some 61,559 retrievers were newly registered in the UK in 2021'

Also XL Bully are not a breed so therefore no registration so therefore no comparative.
We do know XL Bully's killed more people than any other breed, is that enough to think about?

B2B2022 · 26/12/2022 22:57

I made an account just to say you need to get a grip, Jesus wept.

arghtriffid · 26/12/2022 22:57

mean yes it could be dangerous but so could every; rottweiler, German shepherd, boxer, etc
Would you ban all dogs above a certain weight?

Some restrictions should be considered -yes. Some US states and in Ireland measures have already been put in place.

You do realise labradors are the most commonly owned breed?

How many fatalities are attributed to labradors vs injuries?

How many times are American Bully’s attributed to attacks vs fatalities?

Statistically American Bully’s are significantly more of a risk to loss of life than a Labrador.

B2B2022 · 26/12/2022 22:58

You can’t breed aggression into a dog. Tell me you know nothing about dogs without telling me.

B2B2022 · 26/12/2022 22:58

What about the spaniels that go fox hunting? Guess we should ban them all too!

Malinois, Rottweilers, GSD, Doberman or any cross of these should require trained ownerships, special conditions and expensive registrations.

You can’t breed any behavioural traits into a dog, definitely not herding or guarding instincts. Collies and German Shepherds just all magically have such instincts en masse.

Tell me you know nothing about dogs without telling me.

But they have killed.
It's in their DNA and they have the size and muscle to do so, easily.
Usually a puny teenager on the end of a too~ long lead.

They seem mentally unstable, bred by idiots for idiots.

Look at the places where XL bullies kill children , maim adults and kill elderly happen..It's not Middle Class areas.

I did hear that Beagles were particularly anti the fox hunting ban. Voted in their droves

@B2B2022
How do you think police dogs are bred? What a dumb comment.
Bred to have huge bravery but also aggression when required which can be switched on or off by command. That's breed stability. You cannot do that with bull breeds.

antipodeancanary · 26/12/2022 23:03

Unforgettablefire · 26/12/2022 22:23

Oh give over! Comparing a dog with a gun is pathetic it's not even valid.

Why? It seems a perfectly valid comparison to me.

B2B2022 · 26/12/2022 23:04

No dog can lock jaw. Tell me you sit on the daily Mail with no actual understanding!

July70 · 26/12/2022 23:04

The fact is a dog of that size can't be controlled by the owner if the dog decides to got for someone. I've seen dogs like that darg big blokes down the road and one they get hold of you, that is it.

I hate it when prized idiots allow dogs up to me, my grandkids othe rpeople prams etc and say "don't worry he won't hurt a fly."

Almost a weekly occurrence big dog attacking often the owners' friend/family or them
