Neighbour’s XL Bully

Dente · 26/12/2022 21:33

My neighbour has one of these dogs, which to be fair I always on a lead, but I’m so bloody scared of it when I am out walking my dog. He says it’s friendly and our dogs have sniffed each other and he while on leads, but I just feel so uneasy. I feel that if he slipped and that dog got loose it would be such a danger to everyone around. The area I live in is mainly families with young children and I just can’t understand why someone would get this kind of dog?

I understand all dogs can be aggressive, but all dogs don’t have this power and muscle that means they can easily kill!

Horrible dogs with horrible owners.

FWIW I don't like German shepherds, rottweilers in novices hands either.

YABU - in fact, pathetic.

The real dangers in this world are humans - shall we lock all of them up just so you feel safer?

The poor dog has done nothing wrong.

Luckyducker · 26/12/2022 22:05

Of course you are not being unreasonable. They are killing machines. I would not want one living near us. They are a danger and they should not be allowed. Yes, any dog can be aggressive and people often trot out the line about how a chihuahua or a jack russell or a Yorkshire terrier was the most aggressive dog they have ever met. They know they could overpower a chihuahuas with very little effort. They know several full grown adults working together would have little chance of getting a determined XL bully off a person. Breeds that can and frequently do kill people easily should not be living next door to children.

@Reugny We've the same round here. 2 Rotties and a pug all allowed to roam loose. The Rotties are soft as shit, it's the pug you have to watch.

Nasty little fucker it is. I've intervened a few times when it's gone for people. Normally the female Rottie will keep it in line but occasionally the pug does attack people.

Problem is, no one knows exactly where they live and they aren't chipped. A neighbour got hold of a scanner once and we scanned the 2 Rotties but nothing. Never see anyone with them. Some people shouldn't have dogs.

They should be added to the banned breeds list and destroyed. No one needs a dog like this.

You have a really horrible attitude.

Animal owners must accept the risk their pet poses and do their best to mitigate the risk. I love many breeds of dogs, but I know that they wouldn’t be suitable with a young family so I got a spaniel. A spaniel could still attack, but I can accept that risk as I know I could likely overpower a dog of that size.

Perhaps there are some places where this kind of dog would be suitable, I just don’t think it’s a place with lots of families with young kids.

I’d be so scared too and i love dogs. I don't understand why anyone gets these dangerous breeds of dogs.

Because they want to look "hard"

Zanatdy · 26/12/2022 22:13

I’m a massive dog lover but am very wary of those dogs.

HaveYouSeenNancy · 26/12/2022 22:14

I'd hate to live next door to one too, and if I encountered one while out walking my little spaniel we would both promptly shit ourselves.

LaLuz7 · 26/12/2022 22:18

You wouldn't walk the streets with a loaded gun. So why is it ok to walk the streets with a vicious breed that is 60 kg of determination to kill?

Pumpkin20222 · 26/12/2022 22:19

YANBU, it is described on breed websites as a descendent of the pitbull breed.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 26/12/2022 22:20

YANBU, OP. I would NOT want one of those things living next door to me! They are dangerous animals, that's the whole point of them.

GSD owner here, experienced Foster. No, there's a big difference, a bull breed will always hang on to the end, no matter what, they don't fight like other dogs and have no problem with humans. GSD, Rotties etc if fighting tend to do so in waves and do stop and move back, often will move away. Often will avoid fighting with humans. Bull breeds should all be destroyed. Every rescue I had the opportunity of seeing that was a bull breed I avoided as I had seen so many horror stories.

I have a reactive rescue EBT. He has been bitten 3 times by off lead dogs with no recall and never once has he retaliated and not one of those times was it by a bull breed.

Oh give over! Comparing a dog with a gun is pathetic it's not even valid.

SemperIdem · 26/12/2022 22:23

I’m assuming all the people bleating the breed is lovely and it’s the owners fault they’re aggressive to the point they regularly kill humans also think it isn’t a breed trait that collies herd and actually Dave the accountant with a 9-5 instilled that behaviour?

Francisca459 · 26/12/2022 22:23

These dogs are weapons and where I live are bred for intimidation and pit fighting. They have only appeared in this area in the last 12 years brought here by men from a different place and culture.
I love dogs but bull breeds need expert handling. Ask yourself why anyone would choose a dog like that. Anyone who has a dog like that and says it's friendly can fuck right off - they fight to the death. I'm sorry for you OP - I would be the same and I have a lifetime of experience with dogs.

TwoBoyMamma · 26/12/2022 22:24

Onceuponawhileago · 26/12/2022 21:57

Nope. None of them.that I have seem have passed an aptitude test. They are all unstable particularly with other dogs. Get in a tussle with one and you dont get away.

How many have you seen take an aptitude test? I seen 2 xls today living with 4 westies and I’m telling you that I was more scared of the snarling snapping westies . I don’t think you fully understand the breed to say they are unstable with other dogs my one ran away from a pug when she went for him & my other was attacked by a black lab she never even retaliated 🤷🏽‍♀️

Enterusername111333 · 26/12/2022 22:25

YANBU

I just don't see the need for these breeds in a domestic house.

The loaded gun analogy is spot on.

MyDogTails · 26/12/2022 22:25

On the fence here.. In my park is a man who seems quite tough who walks a female XL Bully on a lead. He rescued the dog recently from a well renowned dog charity whose vetting is super thorough. He said that he’s working on toilet training, recall, sitting etc. even though the dog is not a puppy. As we passed, he made her sit and wait nicely until we passed.
He struck me as very responsible and well able to train this dog.
Some of these dogs will be rescues that are being trained by their responsible owners. It might even be the same dog/owner!
