To be upset neighbours didn't send cards?

I thought we had a happy neighbourhood - why couldn't they be bothered to make the tiniest effort?

OP posts:

I only send cards to friends/family I won’t see in person. Waste of money otherwise

Hbh17 · 26/12/2022 11:38

I do send cards to friends who are far away.
I have lived in this house for over 30 years - some of my neighbours have been here longer - I have never sent cards to any of them, nor they to me. It's really not "a thing"!

Bluevases · 26/12/2022 11:43

I gave about 5 cards this year and then only because I found a particularly apt set of cards. I give one to an elderly relative and just use social media, email or a face to face conversation to wish Happy Christmas to people.

Because cards are an enormous faff and people have busy lives? I only send them to far flung family members these days. And nobody I know sends them locally any more.

A piece of cardboard with a Robin on it saying Merry Christmas doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things. I'd rather have gestures like being invited in for a coffee, or going for a walk with a neighbour from time to time. People's company means much more than a card.

Or even a short video chat for those quite a distance away.

We’ve received cards and two out of the majority say more than Merry Christmas. It really is an expensive text message imo and more about the person sending then receiving in many cases.

Purplepuddle · 26/12/2022 11:45

they obviously hate you

No, same as pretty much everyone else on here, its just not the done thing nowadays. Waste of time and paper. I only send a card if I'm giving a gift voucher or something.

They maybe ARE sending to each other, just not to you because you're the miserable neighbour who won't spend a quid on a pack of cards 🤣

pavillion1 · 26/12/2022 11:55

ive not sent 1 card this year and wont be sending any again . i write a teeny message of the gift label.
i think christmas pudding / cake will be a thing of the past too.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 26/12/2022 11:56

Neighbours are just people who happen to live close to each other. No obligation to do anything at all to / for / with any of them. I prefer to keep my distance from mine.

EnyoClytemnestra · 26/12/2022 12:09

Why are you so upset about this OP?

ThePear · 26/12/2022 12:12

@DiddyHeck thats what I thought too, such a weird OP and then research-esque type replies about a topic that’s been done so far beyond death 😄

MajorCarolDanvers · 26/12/2022 12:12

I don't send cards at all.

pocketvenuss · 26/12/2022 12:14

Only cards I send are to family abroad. Otherwise no cards. Even if I'm giving a gift. No card

thelobsterquadrille · 26/12/2022 12:14

I've never once sent a Christmas card to a neighbour.

I don't even give them to my family. Waste of money and awful for the environment too.

Ponoka7 · 26/12/2022 12:16

Anjali2023 · 26/12/2022 10:09

Do you send e-cards or just no cards at all?

I send Christmas GIFs, themed to something that the person likes. I don't have any family left who don't have smart phones. If I had someone very elderly then I'd possibly send a card. During lockdown I did give cards to older neighbours who were struggling. But I agree that they are a waste of resources and stopped them in 2015 when my Mum died.

skippingthroughthedaisies · 26/12/2022 12:18

We didn’t send cards and neither did our neighbours.
We all get on well.

littlepeas · 26/12/2022 12:18

I no longer send any cards. It's a waste of many things - my own time and money, but also paper, fuel for delivery and so on. We have lived in our house for almost 8 years and we still get a few cards for the previous owners - I think that says a lot about what a waste they are.

NippyWoowoo · 26/12/2022 12:21

😂

RambamThankyouMam · 26/12/2022 12:24

Maybe they don't celebrate Christmas.

xogossipgirlxo · 26/12/2022 12:25

My neighbours stopped giving cards. Only one of them did. It just stopped over the years. I still keep giving mine. Don’t know what’s the reason really, maybe people really donate money to charity instead?😂 I got Christmas wishes from one of them on whatsapp instead. Maybe people just can’t be bothered anymore, who knows.

ofwarren · 26/12/2022 12:28

I don't send any, but is it just Christmas cards that are dying out?
What about birthday cards?

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 26/12/2022 12:31

Divebar2021 · 26/12/2022 10:09

Christmas Cards are alive and well - just because you don’t send or receive them does not mean most people don’t send them. We’ve sent about 15 and received about the same in the post plus the many from school friends of DD. None from neighbours but that’s fine because I don’t know them terribly well. I made and delivered some treats though this year so maybe that will change next Christmas

This.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 26/12/2022 12:32

What boils my piss most is the smug 'we're not sending cards this year we're giving money to charity' brigade. Bore off.

DrMarciaFieldstone · 26/12/2022 12:35

Cards are over. If you want to send them, send away, but YABU to expect others to.
