To be upset neighbours didn't send cards?

I thought we had a happy neighbourhood - why couldn't they be bothered to make the tiniest effort?

MolesOnPoles · 26/12/2022 09:58

My generation (30s) don’t really do cards.

My parents do have quite a lot, but Was thinking earlier that it is quite odd that they have generic ones saying ‘Happy Christmas love Sue and Bob’ from people they see literally every day.

HotSauceCommittee · 26/12/2022 09:59

I have had Covid and a crazy work schedule in the run up to Christmas so I haven't sent any cards at all. I do normally like to give my neighbour's Christmas cards, but I just couldn't do it this year, sadly.
Maybe it was a combo of something like this, OP?
I know it's a nice extra and makes a nice neighbourly atmosphere but it's been a funny old year for lots of us.

NeedToChangeName · 26/12/2022 10:00

I think Christmas cards were more popular before eg Facebook made it easier for people to stay in contact all year round

Anjali2023 · 26/12/2022 10:02

Do you still send cards to friends and family or is the whole thing yesteryear?

card belong to the century before social media. Cards are a total waste of time, money and resources, and the more people realise that the better. I have never sent cards, and am glad to say the number we receive is going down and down year on year. I would be annoyed if my neighbours sent me Christmas cards

HelpMeGetThrough · 26/12/2022 10:04

I haven't even talked to my neighbours, haven't seen them in weeks.

yester- century definitely. I ring/ email friends and family, if I am not going to see them

iwantahippopotamus · 26/12/2022 10:05

Awww diddums. Where's that tiny violin of mine?

No one really sends cards anymore. Grow up, but those big kid pants on and move along with it

WaddleAway · 26/12/2022 10:05

I don’t send cards to my neighbours. I say ‘merry Christmas’ when I see them. Better than using the earth’s resources and creating waste.

Beercrispsandnuts · 26/12/2022 10:05

I don’t send cards either, I text the people I’m close to on crimbo morning or call them. Might send a little Christmas gif.

No one Really sends cards any more.

Only elderly family, especially if they're not on social media.

Years ago, I stopped making a card list, buying stamps and spending half an hour writing them out desperately, before the last posting day.

It was very liberating not to have to bother, although we do keep a rapid response pack here in case someone actually visits with a card.

This makes me sad. Social media is no substitute for a hand written, personal card.

I mean I agree that they're expensive and environmentally unfriendly and I certainly don't mind that people don't send them anymore but I do love them. Apart from anything else I didn't know my neighbours' names this time last year (moved in 2 weeks before Christmas) and it was lovely to get cards with all their names on and welcoming us to the road.

rookiemere · 26/12/2022 10:06

I sent cards to relatives abroad only. Cannot see the point of sending cards to neighbours and friends I see regularly. Also do men write and send cards - seems to be unique to females ?

I'm menopausal and have enough to do what with working and juggling elderly DPs and teenager.

I did start our neighbourhood book club though, so I'm not a complete waste of time.

I don’t send cards to people I actually see… what’s the point? I say merry Christmas to their face. I send a couple of cards to elderly relatives who live a long way away, who I don’t see over Christmas and I know will appreciate them. Literally a couple.

PinkiOcelot · 26/12/2022 10:06

YABVU. Seriously, why do you care?

I send them to elderly relatives

TedMullins · 26/12/2022 10:07

cards are a total waste of paper, time and money. The last time I sent one I think I was about 10 and my parents were making me write in them. I’d be annoyed to receive them tbh because they’re so pointless and would be in the recycling by the 27th. So no, I don’t send them to anyone! Nor do I receive any. I’m 33 for ref

No cards to anyone. Period. I'm amazed anyone is still so bothered about sending/receiving cards.

maddy68 · 26/12/2022 10:08

I haven't written cards for years. It's just a weird thing to do. And environmentaly dreadful

Do you still send cards to friends and family or is the whole thing yesteryear?

I think it is quite yesteryear.

The only people I religiously used to send cards to were people living a long way away (DD’s paternal grandmother who lives on a different continent for example, or very old friends who live in the North of Scotland).

I can’t for the life of me see the point sending cards to people you see every week.

Also nowadays a lot of people would be irritated by the wastefulness of it.

vodkaredbullgirl · 26/12/2022 10:09

Can't remember the last time I sent an Xmas card, waste of money.

Anjali2023 · 26/12/2022 10:09

Do you send e-cards or just no cards at all?

OP posts:
Divebar2021 · 26/12/2022 10:09

Christmas Cards are alive and well - just because you don’t send or receive them does not mean most people don’t send them. We’ve sent about 15 and received about the same in the post plus the many from school friends of DD. None from neighbours but that’s fine because I don’t know them terribly well. I made and delivered some treats though this year so maybe that will change next Christmas

lunar1 · 26/12/2022 10:10

It's not the tiniest bit of effort though is it. If you are sending to neighbours you need to include everyone so you don't cause upset. So you need to know everyone's name plus their spouse and which house they are in.

I sent our neighbours cards and it was well over an hours job, half way through I was wishing I'd not started!

LaBellina · 26/12/2022 10:10

so many people are struggling financially that spending money on cards is a luxury that many can’t afford these days.
