Hurrah for Boxing Day

Does anyone else just love boxing day more than Christmas Day. At the moment I’m lying in bed with my kids, they are playing with their toys and watching cartoons. I’m fully planning to not make them get dressed, let them eat what they want today, chocolate for breakfast. And best of all there are no expectations of what to do today, none coming round, no big meal to sort - it’s just so relaxed! Love that Boxing Day feeling - AIBU?

Bubble and squeak for brunch about 11, DP is making it, I’m on MN for a bit, kids entertaining themselves (older teen and 20-something) then we will be walking dog and popping to pub and back home for hot chocolate and Detectorists. Now that’s a nice day imho.

vicaragechristmas · 26/12/2022 09:05

Vicar's wife here so Boxing Day is our first proper day off!

However, thanks to some bad planning on our part, DD's birthday comes immediately after Christmas, so we still end up doing a lot of prep 😆 but it is definitely more relaxing and we are still all in PJs 😄

DillDanding · 26/12/2022 09:06

I love Boxing Day, and all of the relaxed days to follow.

I'm still in bed. I’m hoping dh has cleaned up the carnage in the kitchen as he got up at 5.

We still have houseguests, I’m hoping they go home today!

Soccermumamir · 26/12/2022 09:12

Also prefer Boxing Day to Christmas Day. I can chill more today.

Whatafustercluck · 26/12/2022 09:16

Completely agree and was having this conversation yesterday. Christmas Day is loud and hectic from the outset. Thr day passes so quickly. I love boxing day. The children mooch around in soft clothes, we build their toys, so 'picky food's and eat when we want and watch TV.

Tilllly · 26/12/2022 09:22

Good morning 😊

My favourite day of Christmas

We’re doing the usual, very lazy, eating leftovers, reading, watching tv

I'm still in bed - but the cats are starting to give me the evil Getupandfeedus look

Poppins17 · 26/12/2022 09:44

Just DH and I yesterday so we had a quiet day. Breakfast, took our time getting ready, dog walk, cooked dinner and flopped as we are both unwell with this flu that’s been going around.

DH worked 1am and got home at 6am this morning so he’s in bed. I’ve had croissants for breakfast and now on the sofa chilling with the doggies.

I plan to have Turkey sandwiches for lunch and picky food for tea and stay in my pyjamas all day. Bliss.

it also means I may start to get over this darn flu which I’ve had since 3rd December!

Nacknick · 26/12/2022 10:28

I’ve long maintained that Boxing Day is the best day of the year! I vaguely remember making a post about it last year and didn’t get that much agreement - so I’m happy to find my people here this year 😂

DarkKarmaIlama · 26/12/2022 10:56

Love it. It’s a bit of a breather for me as it’s my daughters birthday tomorrow.

wonderingpondering1 · 26/12/2022 10:58

@Poppins17 im the same, been ill for 3 weeks and this is the first day I’ve had to properly relax. Unfortunately my 4 year old is now asking me to ‘play with her’ groan….I’m quite jealous of everyone with teenagers who get up late and do their own thing

Having a lovely relaxing day, DH is at work, DD in the other room watching TV and I am on mumsnet.

DuncanBiscuits · 26/12/2022 11:24

Love it.

Bubble and squeak, chocolate, Disney film on the telly, walk on the beach, new books to read, everyone fending for themselves out of the fridge, cheese, leftover trifle.

Perfect day.

MassiveSalad22 · 26/12/2022 11:24

I love Boxing Day and the time between Xmas and new year. Love the run up to Xmas. Xmas day is nice but for me it’s just a day that makes the other bits possible 😄

Boxing Day of my childhood meant the whole extended family round and big buffet and more presents from people we didn’t see on Xmas day. So I loved that! My kids have a small family now sadly.

Boxing Day these days are chilled, playing, going for a walk later, and the thing I never saw coming - excited to tidy, declutter, and take decs down! I haven’t yet but they’ll be down before the 30th as we’re going away and like them down before new year. We do put them up first weekend of dec though!

MinnieMountain · 26/12/2022 11:25

Normally yes but DH has buggered off for a walk with MIL, I slept badly and we’ve got more relatives descending at 12.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/12/2022 11:27

Love it. Lots of lovely leftovers to eat up, minimal cooking, no sodding shopping, lots of chocolate to scoff, a nice walk in the park - and it’s sunny here today! - just chilling.
I enjoy the whole week between Christmas and N Year. It’s January that can sod right off once the decorations have all come down.

troppibambini6 · 26/12/2022 11:33

I've got family coming over today but I totally know what you mean.
I am looking to the 27th and 28th when I will be the same.
Although it's only all the kids and partners coming today and the deal is you are all very welcome but ie I'll be only opening packets and some party food at a push Grin

lollipoprainbow · 26/12/2022 11:42

I used to hate Boxing Day because I always enjoyed Christmas Day so much with our family and felt flat. Now we have had so many losses over past few years Christmas day is rubbish so i don't mind it!

KimberleyClark · 26/12/2022 11:46

YANBU. At the mo ent chilling in bed and will have a big brunch later.

GuyFawkesDay · 26/12/2022 12:14

Lie in
Long walk with the dog
Coffee and mince pie s
Wearing comfy jumper and leggings I walked the dog in
Turkey and ham pie and trifle for dinner and got part bake baguettes to do for lunch.
Loads of crap on the telly, books to read and nowhere to be.

Marvellous

U2HasTheEdge · 26/12/2022 12:34

Love it.

I got up at 11.00am. Jacket potatoes, leftover turkey, stuffing etc and cheese boards for lunch.

I lay everything out and everyone helps themselves. Will open a bottle of wine and watch some TV or a film.

Theoldwoman · 26/12/2022 12:41

Boxing Day is done and dusted here.
Just got into bed, it’s just after 8:30pm.
Very chilled day , watched day one of the Boxing Day cricket.
Packed all the Christmas stuff away, vacuumed.
Did some of the jigsaw we are all working on.
Ate leftovers.
Had a big afternoon nap with the puppy.
Had a bath with new Lush products.
A great day!

daffodilandtulip · 26/12/2022 12:57

I love the excitement of Christmas morning and we had an absolutely lovely time. I enjoyed our lunch but it seemed to take up half the day.

After that, everyone's tired and grumpy but there seems to be an expectation that you'll play the new games, be sociable, set the new gadgets up. It all becomes a bit loud and fraught and everyone gets a bit fed up.

Today we have had a fry up, got the fire going, had a little Hoover around. Now we're reading, lying around, eating nice snacks.

Also, speaking of nice snacks - there's lots of "save that for Christmas", but no one ever eats the nice food on Christmas Day 🤷‍♀️

Happy Boxing Day!

warofthemonstertrucks · 26/12/2022 13:02

Dh and dd both have their birthday today. Both absolutely hate having a Boxing Day birthday so it's pretty hard work here trying to make sure we do fun stuff.

twistyizzy · 26/12/2022 13:15

Yep I much prefer Boxing Day to Christmas Day, no pressure or expectations and a lovely chilled out vibe.

Always4Brenner · 26/12/2022 13:19
