To ask whose responsibility is it to check pockets before washing?

Random Mumsnet opinion check please brought on by tissue disaster in our load of washing for Christmas Day outfits

In a house with two adults. Who has the responsibility to check pockets in hoodies and trousers before putting the wash on (ie straight from laundry basket)?

The person who put their clothes in the basket should empty pockets first-YANBU

The person putting the wash on should check pockets as items go into the machine-YABU

The person putting the wash on (although I always forget and I've ruined 3 vapes and a gift card already this week 😩)

Pterrydactyl · 24/12/2022 17:16

I’d say both.

People should empty pockets before they put clothes in the basket.

And then the person putting the wash on should double check in case anything’s slipped through.

DratThatCat · 24/12/2022 17:16

This is a bone of contention in our house. In my opinion it's the responsibility of the person who is putting the clothes into the wash basket, not the person doing the washing. It's a basic courtesy.

Floralnomad · 24/12/2022 17:17

In this house that would be me as I put the washing on .

ErrolTheDragon · 24/12/2022 17:17

Ideally, the former, YANBU.

IRL, both. I occasionally miss a tissue myself when I put my clothes in the basket, so does DH.

Mindymomo · 24/12/2022 17:17

In our house it’s the person putting the clothes in the dirty bin. 4 adults here, I don’t have time to check every pocket.

LanternGhost · 24/12/2022 17:18

Not the person who does the laundry. It's the responsibility of the person who put the clothes in the basket. And I am saying this as the person who does not do the laundry!

HansBanans · 24/12/2022 17:18

In our house it's whoever puts the washing in the basket. DP has had his car key washed as a result but definitely made him more careful!

petalsandstars · 24/12/2022 17:18

The person putting clothes in the wash basket. However any money found left in unchecked pockets then belongs to the one filling the washing machine 😀

GaspingGekko · 24/12/2022 17:18

I do all the laundry in our house. I only do things that are put in the laundry basket. I will always assume if it's in the basket it is ready to be washed - doing laundry is a pain at the best of times without being expected to go through every single pocket to try to find someone else's forgotten about snotty tissues.

The only exception for me is if clothes are picked up off the floor and put in the wash, in that case the person picking up and washing needs to check.

Itloggedmeoutagain · 24/12/2022 17:19

He needs to empty his pockets
I'd bet my life it's the man with the full pockets and the woman doing the washing

AmandaHoldensLips · 24/12/2022 17:19

The person who put the clothes in the basket. My DH is a disaster for tissues but his piece de resistance was a lip balm stick. Jeez.

Dotjones · 24/12/2022 17:19

It's the responsibility of both parties to check.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 24/12/2022 17:19

Unless you have small children it is the responsibility of the garment owner, who should be bloody grateful someone is doing their washing

ScroogeMcDuckling · 24/12/2022 17:19

im sorry, but two checks are better than one I think.

when you are stripping off and putting your clothes in the laundry bin, I do think you should empty your pockets, but I’m the worst culprit for doing this - I leave pens in various pockets, or change for the vending machines at work, so it’s handy whoever is loading the machine (usually me) to double check.

Jewel1968 · 24/12/2022 17:20

I always check before putting stuff in machine AND in basket but I think the most reliable check is at machine stage. I don't think you can have either or as that creates single point of failure.

MRex · 24/12/2022 17:20

Both

SameScriptDifferentCast · 24/12/2022 17:20

We do both in our house but I always do a pocket empty before I put stuff in the wash. Dh never does.

PingPongMerrilyWithPie · 24/12/2022 17:20

In our house you check your pockets as you put something into the wash and turn the item inside out to show you've done this. Person putting the wash on is a backstop but responsibility is firmly with the first person. Same applies with teens.

thebestsellingshow · 24/12/2022 17:20

I check the young DC but I'm not checking another adults pockets before they go in the wash! DH usually doesn't empty his so he's lost a lot of Rennies to the wash unfortunately

sheepdogdelight · 24/12/2022 17:22

The person putting the clothes in. Same way it is their responsibility to turn clothes inside out that need washing inside out, and to straighten them out and not leave them in a ball. If you want your clothes washed then show some courtesy for the person washing them. It takes no time at all for you to check a couple of garments before you put them in the washing basket but is a pain for the washing person to check every item.

Sparklesocks · 24/12/2022 17:22

In our house (only adults) the onus is on the person who puts the item in the wash, because you’re putting it in ready to be washed. If we had small children then the washer would double check too.

Dilbertian · 24/12/2022 17:23

Both.

Because if the loader refuses to check pockets then their clothes get damaged as well.

If someone is a repeat offender at the laundry basket, then the loader can put that garment back in the basket. It doesn't get washed until the offender either does the laundry themselves, or remembers to empty their pockets first.

Another motivator for the lazybones at the basket, is finders/keepers while losing the machine.

randomsabreuse · 24/12/2022 17:24

YANBU - person putting the item in the basket although I do try to check.

TwoPointFourCatsAndDogs · 24/12/2022 17:25

The person putting them into the dirty laundry basket.

My DH always puts his dirty socks together and balls them up, as I do when they're clean and ready to go into his drawer. I HATE having to un-ball them, so I just put them back into his drawer. He's finally got the message.
