AIBU to ask about trifle?

I have made a trifle for tomorrow. This is not a discussion about whether that is unreasonable, whether trifle is delicious or disgusting, or what should go into a trifle - it is about the use of sprinkles on top.

I have never put sprinkles on top of a trifle before but would like to do it for tomorrow's trifle. I do not put whipped cream all over the top - I don't like cream so I'm just piping some blobs around the edge. The trifle is all prepared and in the fridge. If I put the sprinkles on now will they bleed colour into the custard? Do I need to wait until the last minute before putting them on? Your advice would be welcomed!

Wait until you serve it because yes it will bleed.
Also I think you need to have a jug with more cream for others to add because IMHO the cream is the best bit.

TrustYourselfNow · 24/12/2022 10:59

They will bleed, yes. Do it last minute

PeachCottonTree · 24/12/2022 11:04

Last minute for sprinkles. Some people don’t like the crunch either so I’d give people the option before adding to all.

chumbleton · 24/12/2022 11:16

But you do need silver balls. Like tiny little sugar bullets

DilemmaDelilah · 24/12/2022 11:32

Thank you everyone. I have extra cream. I will put the sprinkles on last minute. Can't stand silver balls! Too hard... I am always afraid I will break a tooth and it would detract from the smooth fruity gloopiness of the trifle itself.

Grated chocolate. Not crunchy. Yum.

ChangedmynameagainforChristmas · 24/12/2022 11:38

Yes do it just before serving but please grate chocolate and not sprinkles unless you are 6 !

BootifulLoser · 24/12/2022 11:40

Extra cream.
Serve the sprinkles at the table for everyone to add as/if they wish.

OH is in his 60s and you should have seen his mournful little face last year when I dicovered on Christmas Day that I'd run out of sprinkles.

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 24/12/2022 11:42

I'll put toasted, flaked almonds on top - last minute.

Sprinkles remind me of the 'trifle in a box kits' we had years ago. Unless you're going for nostalgia.

chumbleton · 24/12/2022 14:40

I suggest we post trifle pictures once they are complete. Have a trifle off

FeltCarrot · 24/12/2022 14:42

I am now hankering after a Birds trifle!

carefulcalculator · 24/12/2022 14:44

Grated chocolate, not sprinkles.

amicissimma · 24/12/2022 14:48

Chocolate! Oh, no!

Jelly I can tolerate. Incomplete cream I can tolerate. Variations on the custard theme I can tolerate. Sprinkles, toasted almonds, or other non-glacé cherry/angelica decorations, even silver balls, I can tolerate.

But please, please, please do not contaminate trifle with chocolate. Chocolate is everywhere, specially at Christmas. Please let trifle be a chocolate-free experience!

DilemmaDelilah · 24/12/2022 14:50

It's definitely NOT a Birds trifle! Sprinkles are to make it more fun for the children. And - I understand why people put chocolate curls or grated chocolate on the top... but I have a hatred of fruit and chocolate together (unless chocolate orange, in which pile it on!). This trifle is strawberry, so no chocolate will be allowed to defile it.

OP posts:
DilemmaDelilah · 24/12/2022 14:51

Also... I have strict instructions that the sprinkles need to be the tiny round ones rather than the long ones!

NOOOOOOO!!!! - and have everything think they've lost a filling? Xmas Wink

FeltCarrot · 24/12/2022 15:37

@DilemmaDelilah but look at the artificial trifle loveliness!

I cracked a tooth on one of those silver ball bastards in the summer!

IToldYouAmillionTimesAlready · 24/12/2022 15:39

I'm doing a trifle for Boxing Day. I always put a crumbled-up Flake in the top.

IToldYouAmillionTimesAlready · 24/12/2022 15:39

ON the top

fancyacuppatea · 24/12/2022 15:43

@FeltCarrot You just had to do that, didn't you?🤦‍♀️
I'm not going to the supermarket now!
I've had a baileys and am in my special sprouty PJs.
I'll just have to get one for NYE (and a bottle of sherry) Xmas Grin

I'm totally with you on that.
Chocolate has no place on a trifle.

FeltCarrot · 24/12/2022 15:49

@fancyacuppatea sorry, not sorry! 😂😂

TellMeWhere · 24/12/2022 15:50

You'd ruin trifle for me if you put sprinkles, almonds or chocolate on top. I'd leave them out as optional extras. Along with more cream. The best bit is where the cream meets custard.
