AIBU to ask about trifle?

I have made a trifle for tomorrow. This is not a discussion about whether that is unreasonable, whether trifle is delicious or disgusting, or what should go into a trifle - it is about the use of sprinkles on top.

I have never put sprinkles on top of a trifle before but would like to do it for tomorrow's trifle. I do not put whipped cream all over the top - I don't like cream so I'm just piping some blobs around the edge. The trifle is all prepared and in the fridge. If I put the sprinkles on now will they bleed colour into the custard? Do I need to wait until the last minute before putting them on? Your advice would be welcomed!

Personally no jelly and no chocolate. But if someone makes me a trifle I'll be grateful and appreciative whatever went in. Within reason...

@DilemmaDelilah to me having sherry in a trifle totally ruins it. I have been disappointed many times with a beautiful looking triffle but then it tastes revolting because of sherry 😕

The booze is the only thing that makes a trifle worth eating.

No idea, but I love your delineation of the things that are up for discussion in relation to trifle and the things that are NOT up for discussion in relation to trifle. It feels like you are well into the family-argument avoidance mode and will take no nonsense.😂

You lot might be getting me back on trifle now. I've hated it since I was thirteen - I had complex back surgery and for weeks afterwards the only things I wanted to eat were trifle and garlic bread. I ate so much of it that I've detested it since then... but I might be starting to change my mind!

Flaked almonds, Angelica and glacé cherries is the only way to top a trifle!

Old school.

I'm new school Grin but it is the only way @samstownsunset it's the trifle roolz- I find it difficult to find angelica nowadays, I expect Waitrose probably does it (I haven't made a trifle for a long time!)

daisychain01 · 25/12/2022 15:06

I find that sherry makes the trifle sponges go all gritty.

daisychain01 · 25/12/2022 15:08

Trifle fruits - tinned peaches, apricots, pears always in natural juice, and sometimes a good quality macedonia of fruits (Del Monte) which have the little baby cherries.

Germolenequeen · 25/12/2022 15:12

Yes to Birds custard and "hundreds and thousands" and no no no to sherry in it - prefer to drink mine - just had a glass - cheers 🥳

Germolenequeen · 25/12/2022 15:17

Birds Custard kit I mean - don't like mine contaminated with fruit either - such a child of the late 60s early 70s although my mother made Creme Caramel not trifle 😅 Also only BBC allowed on in our house too but that's a whole other thread 😆

DilemmaDelilah · 25/12/2022 20:00

@ChangedmynameagainforChristmas Glad you like my trifle 😁. @Random789 how did you guess! 😁 To be honest I've seen so many threads on here which have been completely derailed by somebody getting the wrong end of the stick or people getting offended about the stupidest things (in my very humble opinion) that I thought it necessary to make it quite clear what I was asking.
And - after all that - I discussed the sprinkles/cream issue with my daughter who didn't want either -so we had a naked (but very delicious) trifle.

I cracked a tooth on one of those silver ball bastards in the summer!

I use Tesco silver balls, they’re round just like the hard sugar ones but the centre is light and airy like Rice Krispies! A total game changer.

I would ditch the cream, custard is the best bit. Chocolate trifle isn't really trifle, just splodge. You need the sharpness of the fruit to balance the jelly. Chocolate orange with mandarin segments is acceptable.

I've never done this myself, but chocolate and cherry would surely be a good combination? With cherry jelly too!

Would you believe my Sainsbury's AND Waitrose were both out of tinned fruit cocktail on Christmas Eve. I had to use a frozen berries mix drowned in raspberry jam. Hopefully it's not horrible.
Also had to use Bonne Maman cakes instead of Madeira cake and strawberry jelly instead of raspberry!

I once saw Delia Smith make a trifle and she topped with blue red and silver glittery bits, if never been able to find where to get then from.
No jelly or fruit in our trifle
Just sherry soaked sponges, raffia biscuits and for the first time its Mary Berrys cheat custard. No faffing with eggs etc.. just posh ready made custard mixed with double cream then topped with billowing whipped cream. Maybe toasted flaked almonds

Greenpolkadot · 25/12/2022 22:02

RATTAFIA BISCUITS,,,not raffia

Mezmer · 25/12/2022 22:04

I made a trifle and it wasn’t very nice.

the roast potatoes were not nice either. The potatoes were bitter.

everything else…pretty good!

Epicstorm · 25/12/2022 22:13

No sprinkles or silver balls on my portion please.

Ive gone rogue and done a trifle cheesecake - I also don’t like cream so will do dollops around the edge and have bought sprinkles for a retro vibe.

But I am partial to grated chocolate on a trifle.

Trifle cheesecake, you say?? Sounds like heaven!
