I was BM for my future SIL but she wasn't mine as she was 9m pregnant at the time.

SaveMeCheezus · 24/12/2022 05:52

No, but she was a witness (as was my brother).

eurochick · 24/12/2022 06:04

No, and I don't think I've ever been to a wedding with a sil bridesmaid.

miltonj · 24/12/2022 06:14

I would never have had my BILs wife but would have asked my brother's wife if I thought it would be something she'd enjoy.... but she'd absolutely hate it!

WingingIt09 · 24/12/2022 06:37

Mine weren't but their children were. Similarly I'm not for my brother's wedding next year but my children are in the wedding party.

autienotnaughty · 24/12/2022 07:15

It depends if you are very close to sil/had a strong relationship for a long time then potentially yes. I had neither sil at mine (2 marriages) and I wasn't asked by either. First sil id known 4 years not overly close. Second id known 7 years and fairly close.

Who acted as your witness?

My mum and dad as far as I remember. It was 27 years ago though so not entirely sure.

RoseAndRose · 24/12/2022 07:27

It happens frequently enough, but it's not a norm (IYSWIM)

Or at least not in the sense of it being something that should be done. It's not a snub in any way if it doesn't happen.

Enko · 24/12/2022 07:58

No I didn't have any grown up bridesmaids.

My cousin who was 11 and dhs goddaughter who was 2.

Sil did not attend the wedding (we married in Denmark)

My 2 best friends were marked with having a corsage each one was 9 months pregnant gave. Birth 4 days later.

Sil was married many years before I met dh. Neither of my siblings are married I was a witness when sister married but only myself the best man and bride and groom present.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 24/12/2022 08:08

I have two brothers.

I was for one. She's been with my brother since I was 11/12.

I wasn't for the other. I was their witness, though.

underneaththeash · 24/12/2022 08:09

No, but I didn't have any bridesmaids.....I think 25% of the weddings we've been to have had a SIL.

katmarie · 24/12/2022 08:12

My SIL took the role of best man (or best woman) because that was what dh wanted, otherwise she would have been my bridesmaid yes, but she's wonderful and we have a great relationship. When my brother got married none of his 3 sisters, me or my 2 dsis, were in the wedding party, and we never expected to be. His wife is awesome, and we get along great, but she had her side of the family in her wedding party. No animosity around that at all, I would have been shocked to be asked tbh.

mistletoemondays · 24/12/2022 08:47

Common but not the norm. I had my SIL. My friend didn't, because her DH had his sisters as Best Women which was lovely
