? Is this the norm in the U.K.?

OP posts:
Thepossibility · 23/12/2022 20:43

I had her and she had me.

Thepossibility · 23/12/2022 20:44

And DH had my brother as a groomsman as well.

Thirdsummerofourdiscontent · 23/12/2022 20:44

No, I hardly know them. We don’t live close and only see them about twice a year. Small wedding party and Dh didn’t have my brothers as groomsmen.

Puffykins · 23/12/2022 20:49

No. It never occurred to me. And I barely know her.

LankylegsFromOz · 23/12/2022 20:51

One of my SIL was (my favourite 🙂). I'm an only child so I chose her as my quasi sister, even though I had alot of friends to chose from. I was happy with my decision, but then I love her.

Individewl · 23/12/2022 20:52

Nope and my SIL didn’t even have one of her own sisters as bridesmaid! Just had one of her sisters (has 2) and the other bridesmaids were her friends. Also had 2 nieces as flower girls but didn’t ask my daughter to be flower girl. We haven’t ever fallen out or anything. I wasn’t bothered by it, I just assumed it was down to money as to why my daughter wasn’t a flower girl - maybe she couldn’t afford the extra dress?
Its your wedding choose whoever you like it’s your day!

fairtrauchled · 23/12/2022 20:53

I was a bridesmaid for one of my SILs.

DowntonCrabby · 23/12/2022 20:55

I was a BM for my DSIL, she signed as one of our witnesses as we only had DD as a BM. I love her as I love my own sisters and probably like her more

Fluffygoon · 23/12/2022 20:56

I had to have both SIls as bridesmaids otherwise the rest of the family wouldn’t come to the wedding 🙄They were both married and I wasn’t bridesmaid for them - wouldn’t have occurred to me to be asked. On the day they behaved horribly and DH told his dad to sort them out otherwise they could both FO home ! Fast forward 30 years youngest SIL had the wedding of her son recently and she was vile.
Do what makes you happy.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 23/12/2022 20:56

Not the norm, but not uncommon

I am not particularly close to my SiLs. In fact the only one I ever liked much divorced my brother!

Neverhot · 23/12/2022 20:57

Mine was and tbh most people I know have had their sil as bm.

Aldith · 23/12/2022 20:58

I have a sister and a sister in law and none of us were bridesmaids at each other’s weddings. Whilst none of us actively dislike each other none of us are that close and see each other two or three times a year.

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 23/12/2022 21:03

I have no idea if there were bridesmaids at either of the weddings that put me in the SIL status, or who they were, if they had some. So no.

BelleNoir · 23/12/2022 21:04

No they weren't

ThePalace · 23/12/2022 21:05

No. We didn't have a wedding party, just our closest friends as witnesses. I wasn't for my SIL

thankyouforthesun · 23/12/2022 21:05

Mine were, one I'm close to, the other not. My PIL asked for them to be bridesmaids and it was easy enough to agree to make everyone feel happy and welcome.
When my brother got married I wasn't a bridesmaid but mg daughters were flower girls.

pinklabel · 23/12/2022 21:16

Mine was

DramaAlpaca · 23/12/2022 21:20

Mine was, and I was bridesmaid for her as well. We are close friends.

Unicorn717 · 23/12/2022 21:20

Would be a big fuck no to having my partners sister as a bridesmaid!

SquigglePigs · 23/12/2022 21:21

Mine was. I get on very well with her and I genuinely wanted her to be.

Blendandmix · 23/12/2022 21:22

Yes she was mine. I wasn't hers. I have 2 sisters and she has none.... I was really hurt

Littlefish · 23/12/2022 21:23

No. I didn't have my sister either. Just 2 small bridesmaids and 1 pageboy.

H1Drangea · 23/12/2022 21:23

No , I have one SIL and 2 sisters , none of them were bridesmaids
I didn’t particularly want bridesmaids , though I did have my niece ( age 10 at the time )

TCMolly · 23/12/2022 21:26

Yes, we are close.

PicaK · 23/12/2022 21:27

Mine was. Cos exMIL told exdh that she had to be. Waste of a dress - her and exMIL both couldn't wait to tell me simpering and smirking that it had been "ruined" at the dry cleaners. I was baffled by that. She sat with a face on her apart from when she was picking her nose during the speeches. I should have given up on the marriage then.
