How to ask for shoes off!

I don't want to be 'that person' but we are having a little Christmas Eve get together at our house tomorrow. We've just put every penny we have into a house renovation, so I would really prefer if guests remove their shoes. I always do when I visit people, but is there a diplomatic way to ask if they don't? I'm not usually super fussy, but we've spent so much getting our home nice, I could really do without a lot of dirty shoes traipsing through and it's given heavy rain all morning to make matters worse!
If you're just going to make a snide remark, please don't bother replying to my post - helpful answers only please. Thankyou 🥰

@Delatron - but I have no dogs, we never wear shoes indoors and even workmen are given shoe covers. Why should guests be allowed to soil my house with their outdoor shoes? I'm only asking politely, what's rude about it?

You care more about your floor than your guests. That’s what’s rude.

I don’t wear shoes indoors. I always offer to take them off but I wouldn’t dream of being such a bad host to have signs and slippers and glare at people’s shoes, and demand they are removed. I just want guests to feel comfortable. I don’t give a shit about my floor. I’ll sweep and mop it the next day FFS.

If you can’t bear shoes in your house then don’t host parties. Because most people do not want to stand about at a party in socks/tights or bare feet. It shows what you care about - and it’s not people having a good time.

Totally agree with @Delatron

.....and am still waiting to find out how the people who won't let anyone in their house with their party shoes on are going to manage if someone spills a drink or some food gets dropped on the floor.

Extra judicial killing. You can't be lenient with these things.

Sorry I am late to answer but have been without internet for the past 4 days. Like you I prefer shoes not worn in my home. I will tell people in advance that shoes are not allowed. Regular visitors automatically remove their shoes. I answer the door shoeless or in slippers. If they don't automatically take off their shoes i will say "Can I offer you a pair of new slippers in exchange for your shoes or would you prefer to go shoeless. Either option is fine with me"

Just tell them. We live in a pretty mucky farmhouse and even our builders take their shoes off when they walk through finished/lived in parts of the house!

Do you really say that? It sounds very odd said out loud. And how many pairs of new slippers do you then go through? You must buy a new pair each time you invite a guest.

It's often literally about the flooring that can't be walked on and less about hygiene because I've found other aspects of hygiene very concerning from shoes off people.

HairyMcLarie · 27/12/2022 10:55

Oh hai hun! Can you pop your dog shit smeared shoes off and wear these slippers instead?!
