No pigs in blankets

I thought we were ready for Christmas but I have just realised we have no pigs in blankets. I thought I had some frozen bought ahead but there are none in the freezer.
AIBU to send DS out for them and if he doesn't go, manage without?

Is it a recent or American thing?

American pigs in a blanket are completely different things from British pigs in blankets. First recipe for the British version seems to have been published in the 1950s but they were popularised by Delia Smith in the 90s.

American pigs in blankets are totally different. When I grew up in the 80's and first had them there they were breakfast sausages wrapped in pancakes and drizzled with maple syrup.

I more recent (as far as I'm aware) version is mini sausages wrapped in ready to bake dough kind of like a soft croissant (minus the flakey layers) wrapped around them. They're often dipped in a mustard sauce at parties.

Because of the carby blanket they're much stodgier than a U.K. pig in blanket. But the American reference to blanket does make much more sense to me as the blanket is a nice fluffy layer totally different to the pig sausage

Growing up in the 70's my parents always went all out at Christmas and the food available was completely over the top but neither of us can remember sausages wrapped in bacon.

I was pondering this yesterday too and I agree - South London in the 70s and not a pig in a blanket to be seen. I only remember it from the 90s when I went to my XH's family for Christmas. (So, different location and family traditions)

RosesAndHellebores · 24/12/2022 12:14

I don't remember pigs in blankets either in the 60s/70s. Neither do I remember green tree like brocoli. We only had purple sprouting and I think that was an autumn thing.

I don't remember pigs in blankets or red cabbage,

@antelopevalley - first time we have ever agreed Xmas Grin. I don't remember red cabbage either until quite recent years.

We love the piggies in blankets more than the turkey. In Aldi they had Cumberland cocktail sausages and I wrap in smoked streaky bacon myself. You can still get them if you hurry.

@PonyPatter44 Grin it's a fairly new chip shop, you can even pick what salt (maldon/garlic/lemon) and the chips are double fried beef dripping

I think we all might be moving in with you !

Aquarius1234 · 24/12/2022 15:38

1st year in ages I couldn't buy any in marks and spencer s.
They aren't even that nice but.. I got bacon only.

Aquarius1234 · 24/12/2022 15:39

Willmafrockfit · 24/12/2022 15:46

Why wouldn’t they be edible? It’s sausage wrapped in bacon.

DH has been merrily devouring Tesco pigs in blankets since November and he’s still alive and well 🤷‍♀️

Aquarius1234 · 24/12/2022 19:12

Cool..I think the quality of M &S has gone down since covid. Same prices if not more tho.. esp frozen fish not good. And chips and meat.

I obviously must come from outer space or another dimension or something, but in all my 60+ years I have never seen or had pigs in blankets at a Christmas dinner. They seem to be a new(ish) thing, does anyone know when they started?

We had them in the 80's when I was a kid. We called them 'sausages with bacon' though. I can't remember when people started calling them pigs in blankets

LBFseBrom · 24/12/2022 23:05

I am nearly 73 and we always had them but, like Violet, didn't call them 'pigs in blankets'; I also served them every Christmas (and at other times), wrapping streaky around chipolatas. Therefore they are not a new thing but the title is probably fairly recent, at least here in the UK.

Willmafrockfit · 26/12/2022 04:16

i wonder if pigs in blankets started in the 1960s

You weren’t sure if processed meat wrapped around processed meat was edible? Because the two types of processed meat weren’t entwined by your own hand?

Really?
