Sliders with socks

I admit, I don’t get out much.

But, how long has it been fashion for men to wear sliders with socks?

In the last 2 days, I’ve seen three men of different ages walking in sliders with socks. It’s winter and it’s raining, how are their socks not getting wet for a start?

AIBU thinking they look ridiculous and not even practical.

Ooh yes this has been a thing for a while. DS and his friends all around 15 are wearing their sliders, socks, shorts and then big winter coats. The mind boggles.

I'd rather see socks than bare feet. Some people just don't feel the cold as much or are only going from car to shop. Sometimes they have a foot or toe nail injury and that's the most comfortable footwear.

Fashion is never practical! I don’t get it either but I was a teen in the 80s and wore some dubious things myself so I can’t really say anything.

It’s been a thing for a couple of years now. I think it looks stupid, but then I’m not the one wearing them. It did make me laugh when the summer was really hot that I still saw people wearing socks with their toilet slippers sandals.

My kids love this look.
It looks absolutely ridiculous, especially when they pull the socks up stupidly high up their calves.

When you say men, how old? It's a thing with teen boys around here, but would look silly on older men.

I've seen it, I don't understand it, especially in the rain. Take your socks off, skin is waterproof socks aren't.

Ages wise: late teen, mid twenties and fifties.

I guess I’m just an old fogey and my adult boys aren’t fashionable!

@MistressoftheDarkSide love that, spiders with socks. Thank god they’re not that big around here.

It's a thing and has been for a good few years. My 11 yo does it but it's horrific as he chooses the most garish dark socks with white sliders. I think colour matching and with shorts is ok but my boy looks ridiculous and won't be told 😆

it's to do with American sport stars/hip hop although I though the sliders had been replaced with crocs in the last year.

It is the fashion for teenagers and young men.

The look very much depends which sliders, which socks and what else they are wearing with them.

It isn't the look for an older male who would normally wear socks and sandals!

The Americans have been doing this for years, they all wore them at least 30 years ago!!
It's not a new fashion, but took a while to come over here. I saw it so much in my youth it seems quite normal to me🤣

We've been staying at a friend's house and there's a little shop across the road. The sheer number of adult men going in and out (from probably late teens to well into middle age) wearing socks and sliders in the pouring rain is crazy. It's so cringey and looks equally bloody awful on everyone. Admittedly I've never been a fan of sportswear as general daytime clobber but this is next level. I can sort of see how sliders are useful at a spa or pool (which is what they are intended for) but with socks? Outside?? In winter??? Nope, nope and nope.

I do it quite a lot. If I am just popping to the corner shop or something I can't be arsed to have to actually do shoe laces so I just slip into my sliders. With socks they are very comfy.

Theres something about these kinds of threads that I find really irritating - I don’t know why. It sometimes feels that a large percentage of the MN community will not be happy until we’re all wearing nice practical Seasalt coats and little cardigans. To answer your question it’s been a fashion for a long time. I quite like it but then I like the look of socks with sandals too. It’s not particularly practical but then my huge teddy coat from Cos is not that practical in the rain either. Thank god we can all make our own choices.

Ds2 15 does it as do most of his basketball team mates. Most are into hip hop/rap.

Well I’ve learnt something new today.

If these threads irritate you @Divebar2021 then just walk on by - in your wet socks and sliders.

Not just men and boys either, I work in a school and when we had non-uniform day there were lots of girls and boys wearing socks with sliders. Also saw a few wearing socks and crocs!
