To find Offred annoying?

I don’t know why I find her so irritating! Anyone else feel this way about her?

@farawayplaces me too!!

MassiveSalad22 · 22/12/2022 18:32

@Keyansier why respond to a thread if 1) you have no idea what the person is on about and 2) when you catch up, you realise it’s not something you have any interest in?

OP I have always found Offred a bit jarring too… can’t put my finger on it. But she’s a good vehicle for the story. I guess we’re meant to find her a bit uncomfortable.

The character or the actress who plays her? I find Elizabeth Moss’s facial expressions so irritating- the extreme closeups of her doing a kind of deranged smile, arched eyebrows, eyelids quivering. If she did that in real life she’d look insane.

I agree. I stopped watching THT after S3 cos I thought it was turning into The Elisabeth Moss Show, full of long slow close-up shots. Around the time she started getting those exec producer credits! 😛All that said, S1, which followed the book pretty closely, was a terrific achievement.

Even though, those few years ago, it did seem ridiculously far-fetched. But now, many in the US (and not just there) seem to treat Atwood's work as a how-to-do manual.

Sunnytwobridges · 22/12/2022 18:52

She annoys the piss outta me. Her facial expressions make me cringe. And I hate all the close ups which are so unnecessary. I stopped watching after the second season because I couldn't take her facial expressions anymore.

I do however rather enjoy the irony of someone who is a high profile member of a misogynistic cult based on religion playing a character fighting against what is effectively a misogynistic cult based on religion.

Yeah there's that, too...

Anyway, glad it's not just me! 😊

NatalieIsFreezing · 22/12/2022 19:08

Tbf I don't think it's specific to EM - anyone in that role being directed in that way would result in FAR too much FACE!

It's been constant throughout the whole show since s1! I reckon they could've cut out 12 hours or so if they just cooled it a bit with all the liiiingerinf shhhhhhots of walking or looking or sitting or plotting...

BaileySharp · 22/12/2022 19:43

She gets a bit arrogant and makes foolish decisions sometimes. She's clearly only alive because of plot armour!

nettytree · 22/12/2022 20:29

I've recorded the latest series, but Elizabeth moss is the reason I've not watched it yet. Many of the other characters are more exciting to watch.

JeezLouiseErrrr · 22/12/2022 20:33

I think she overdoes the facial expressions and I don't like all the drawn out pauses and camera work. They both lay it on too thick. The whole show is depressing so I actively avoid it.

Afterfire · 22/12/2022 20:38

I really enjoyed season 1 and even further seasons up to the part where she travels to the larger city where the Handmaids have their mouths sewn shut. I found that so horrifying and interesting and I wish they’d explored that more. I think now it’s gone to where it’s almost split between the two “worlds” of Canada and Gilead it’s not as compelling.

AutumnIsMyFavouriteSeason · 22/12/2022 20:43

I've watched 10 episodes of season 5. Can't tell if it's finished or more episodes to go? Anyone know any more than me?

Yirk · 22/12/2022 20:43

I like Elizabeth, she is perfect for the role imo.,
This last series 5 has been brilliant, sad its finished.

Yes, s5 was 10 episodes. Waiting for s6 (the final season) now. I don't know when it's going to be released, don't know if there's a date yet.

When I found out she was as a Scientologist in real life I was astonished.

JeezLouiseErrrr · 22/12/2022 22:24

Oh my God a Scientologist? It all makes sense now!😲

duc748 · 23/12/2022 00:06

More generally, I think THT first couple of seasons was a wonderful evocation of the book, and I have to think, decades after writing it, what does Atwood think of it now? A warning has become a users manual.

HurtAndConfused2022 · 23/12/2022 00:54

I tried watching THT years ago but had to stop because I can’t stand EM’s acting and gurning lol

KloppsTeeth · 23/12/2022 01:35

Totally agree with this. The moment she got the director / producer role, it became super annoying. I don’t want close ups
of her face and micro muscle twitching.
her character has evolved into one I don’t have an interest in so I think the current season 5 will be the last we watch. EM has ruined it with her style.

Fifi00 · 23/12/2022 01:45

I much prefer Emily I'm so sad Alexis left she portrayed the horror and trauma so well. I also love Janine and aunt Lydia . I want to punch June and Serena most of the time.

anotheronenow · 23/12/2022 05:33

+1. Also thought it was just me. Every time we went into one of those cringey close-ups I used the remote control to advance the frames. EM for me is one of those rare actors who start off good, in various things, and then get worse -- perhaps as you realize they have zero range. No self-awareness as a director either. Ruined the last seasons for me.

I also think the actor who plays Serena Joy is phenomenal and acts the pants off EM.

The only way I will ever watch EM is with a remote control so I can fast forward.

Like the OP, this is a rare reaction from me. I don't think I've ever found any actor quite so unwatchable...

Lollypop701 · 23/12/2022 08:22

@anotheronenow you beat me to it! I can only watch on recorded … cuts out a good 10 minutes

Lostinalibrary · 23/12/2022 09:35

I binge watched this recently. I’m glad you said this, the close ups really annoyed me. As a character I found I began to really dislike her.

winewolfhowls · 23/12/2022 09:50

I'm not too keen on the Fred character either. That actor has been amazing in lots of things but in this I don't find him quite convincing (maybe one of those I read the book and he's not how I imagined things).

UseAMuckySock · 23/12/2022 10:28

Is the book worth reading then? (Even after watching the series or have I ruined it for myself?)

Ninfa · 13/04/2023 23:51

Absolutely annoying her facial expressions are quite poor!!!!
