to suggest that if you think what Clarkson said was a step too far (being polite) to complain to IPSO?

www.ipso.co.uk/complain/complaints-form/

IPSO will publicise how many complaints they receive.

If everybody who thinks what Clarkson wrote was unacceptable, even if he dislikes MM (and he's under no obligation to like her) contacts IPSO, then it sends a message. And may dissuade editors from signing of on vileness like this in future.

Worth a try, surely.

If people remain quiet, it looks like it's ok.

Complaining to IPSO is better than tweeting your opinion, because it doesn't publicise the paper or Clarkson. Both of them relish the publicity.

Meh. There are some men I'd fantasise about having the same done to them. Doesn't mean I'd actually think it was OK to happen.

Presumably you keep your degrading fantasies to yourself. Not broadcast it by writing about it in The Sun.

Saxiee · 20/12/2022 20:13

I don't agree that it's a race and sex issue. How can you know that the reason someone hates someone else is because of their sex or race? If I hate Andrew Tate, it's because I hate him, but if I hate a black woman, it's because I'm a racist misogynist? I don't really get that.

Either way, just doesn't bother me.

I don’t see Clarkson as the main problem, the main problem is editorial control or lack of it.
who is the editor of the Slum?

Liverpool boycotted the Slum as a result of their lies over hillsbrough - perhaps women should lead the boycott of the Slum.

Gabbyaug · 20/12/2022 20:22

Thanks OP. I've sent my complaint in too.

Really? I’ve been abused, treated awfully by various people. I am disgusted by the behaviour of many abhorrent people.

I would not want that done to anyone and it says a lot about someone who does.

I want criminals punished by law and I want people to not be hateful. I don’t want to humiliate anyone.

I truly find your stance disgusting.

Palacepicker · 21/12/2022 12:17

Sent in my complaint too

OmiOmy · 21/12/2022 13:25

Is it just me then who can't summit the form. The circle goes round and round but never submits and never times out either. I've tried several times over the last day or so.

IrmaGord · 21/12/2022 13:36

Someone not related to H&M is now crowdfunding on Twitter to bring legal action against Jeremy Clarkson (how and about what is not clear). They've raised £5k so far.

While I think what he said was unnecessarily vicious and out of order, the reaction to it all has been absolutely bat shit.

SamphiretheTervosaurReturneth · 21/12/2022 13:37

Were there any complaints about the GoT scene he was, apparently, referring to?

LowbrowVictoriana · 21/12/2022 13:45

Possibly, but what of it? It's irrelevant. That was a scene in an adult fantasy drama, obviously fiction.

Jeremy Clarkson is writing in a newspaper column his wish to see an actual, named individual who has done nothing wrong, suffer degradation and violence.

I would happily do that if I'd ever bought the rag to start with. I imagine a lot on here are a j the same position.

Because if a scenario is disgusting then it doesn't matter where a man had it published. That a man imagined the scenario denigrates women, as individuals or other, is misogynistic.

It's the male gaze, the male fantasy, presumption that is the issue, isn't it?

I'm not defending Clarkson, just pointing out that Martin was the imagineer of the scenario he found 'stimulating'

LadyWithLapdog · 22/12/2022 08:24

@SamphirethePogoingStickerist to me, that amounts to “Miss, he started it”. Which may be ok for schoolboys but not grown men.

Martin imagined a degrading punishment for a pretty awful fictional character during a fantasy show; it was meant to be reminiscent of horrific punishments in medieval times.

Clarkson has expressed his wish for degrading violence to be acted out on a real woman who has committed no crime. That someone else dreamt up the nature of this degradation doesn't absolve him of the seriousness of this.

MirroringTinsel · 22/12/2022 08:45

Complained to ipso for the first time. Should probably complain to whoever screens Millionaire too.

Who would want to go on the show as a woman. I’d hate to have to work with people like him.

Which is why I said I am not defending Clarkson.

I find it odd that the scenario, disgusting woman, medieval punishment etc, can be imagined by one man and deemed to be fine and reviled when repurposed by another.

But then I don't understand the love for GoT which is itself utterly derivative. Maybe that's the difference.

Zombiemum1946 · 22/12/2022 09:13

He said she was worse than a woman who raped, tortured and murdered children, including her own. He claims to fantasise about her being striped, paraded through the streets and have excrement thrown at her. That's not funny nor should it be defended on the basis of free speech. It was disgusting and pathetic. Even his own kids are disgusted by what he wrote. Not liking someone is no excuse to be as vile as that.

MariahsBaubles · 22/12/2022 09:13

To everyone focussing and on JC's or the publication's right to free speech: yes of course but I have a right to speak up and vocalise my response to it also.
The first of this year's Reith Lectures was an eloquent and compelling defence of free speech from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and worth a listen for anyone who wants to dig into this aspect of the debate

The editorial code exists to uphold standards in the British press. Many are of the view it has been breached hence having the ability to complain to IPSO

Thank you for communicating this so well. I have been looking for something to listen to, to quell my disgust and anger, and this is perfect. Thank you for putting the discussion back on track.

I don’t understand it either, it’s a horrible series.

KalvinPhillipsBoots · 22/12/2022 09:33

Get some real problems 🙄

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 22/12/2022 09:38

I think women and girls are facing a huge crisis at the moment we really are.
How many women are being denied their basics rights at the moment?
Can't do the absolute basics in life?
Women and girls being attacked and killed physically etc.
The met police attitude, JC , pier's, a woman getting death threats...it's all maddness.
We wouldn't tolerate this against any other group at all.

It does seem like there's been a real pushback against progress for women.
