to suggest that if you think what Clarkson said was a step too far (being polite) to complain to IPSO?

www.ipso.co.uk/complain/complaints-form/

IPSO will publicise how many complaints they receive.

If everybody who thinks what Clarkson wrote was unacceptable, even if he dislikes MM (and he's under no obligation to like her) contacts IPSO, then it sends a message. And may dissuade editors from signing of on vileness like this in future.

Worth a try, surely.

If people remain quiet, it looks like it's ok.

Complaining to IPSO is better than tweeting your opinion, because it doesn't publicise the paper or Clarkson. Both of them relish the publicity.

Done OP, good idea.

Its blatantly obvious the game of thrones reference

So.

Does that make a difference?

If he had said that she should be hung, drawn and quartered, would that have been ok as it's a historical reference?

How so? I know nothing about GOT and surely I am not the only one.

Have registered a complaint.

I actually found his comments funny, it was clear he was being facetious.

If you don’t like what he said ,don’t read and move on. 12,000 may have complained but another 66 million didn’t complain.

You are aware that black and Asian people actually do have shit thrown at them in real life, thrown at their houses and posted through their letter boxes?

I'm lucky to only have been spat at.

I'm glad you find that sort of racism and misogyny funny.

And your argument is that because it's a reference to a tv show, it's somehow not misogynistic and violent imagery?

kirinm · 20/12/2022 10:35

I've never watched GoT so wouldn't understand the reference. What I did see was him comparing MM to a serial killer and suggesting he is kept awake at night dreaming of the day she is stripped naked and made to walk through the streets with the public throwing shit at her.

Those who would rather we ignore him are doing his job for him. You don't get to say this sort of shit without consequences and I don't know anyone who has read this and thought, wow yes, I definitely want to read more of his wise words.

Of course in the whole history of the world only black and Asian people have had shit thrown at them.

Typical Mumsnet….everything is a race issue.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 20/12/2022 10:51

I've already done it.

In this case it a race and sex issue.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 20/12/2022 10:58

There were only 14,000 complaints made in total last year. People rarely make an actual complaint even if they find something offensive.

Pleasecreateausername13 · 20/12/2022 10:59

Reugny · 20/12/2022 10:58

How exactly is it a race issue? I’m genuinely curious?

LadyWithLapdog · 20/12/2022 11:05

@Reugny i wouldn’t waste time.

neverbeenskiing · 20/12/2022 11:24

What's your point? Clarksons inability to have an original thought, whist irritating, isn't relevant here. Whether his violent fantasies are inspired by a TV show or just the inner-workings of his own sad little brain doesn't matter, its still not appropriate to link them to an actual named woman in a newspaper column.

LadyWithLapdog · 20/12/2022 11:26

The violent imagery could’ve come from the Bible. Still doesn’t make it excusable.

Karwomannghia · 20/12/2022 11:27

Pleasecreateausername13 · 20/12/2022 10:59

Because she is mixed race she is vulnerable to more racist abuse on the back of any abuse and the imagery he chose is in line with typical racist abuse. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen to white people, but not acknowledging the links and images thrown up by the reference and the potential consequences in the face of racist oppression is at best shockingly ignorant and at worst the worst kind of ‘jokey’ racism by stealth, where you know there are people out there who are dangerously overtly racist that will pick that up and run with it.

LemonDrizzles · 20/12/2022 13:31

Added to my to do list. Thank you

catzrulz · 20/12/2022 13:41

Done! Sitting at around 17,500 complaints now.

Maybebabyno2 · 20/12/2022 15:45

I'm amazed this got this got through editors and everything and no one thought it was a problem. The complaint should be wider than just Clarksom imo.

Regardless whether you like MM or not, this statement of very anti women and quite frankly disgusting. I have always enjoyed watching Clarkson but won't be tuning in anymore.

Trixiefirecracker · 20/12/2022 16:14

@thelobsterquadrille people expressing options on here that might be negative or hateful is not the same as a journalist or journalistic figure who has a platform that reaches millions (aside from the fact mumsnet is regulated and people do complain about posts that are then often removed). As a journalist/public figure there comes a duty to speak your truth with some kind of integrity. There are many, much less vile ways to get his point across. It was unnecessarily vitriolic and frankly disturbing. It’s a race and misogyny issue. Fat white privileged male ripping apart and hounding black women, inciting perceived violence. He and Piers are on some sort of witch hunt. If you can not see that his platform Is very different from this platform then I worry for you. I do not think anyone should be able to openly be so hideous to one another, it’s a sad mirror of out times that folk are defending it. We must be mindful how our press speaks and treats people. It was not long ago that a woman in the public eye committed suicide from press and various other related problems. People have a right to speak out against injustice too and that is what is happening here. I have complained. First time ever . Don’t feel we need this kind of gutter rubbish being published, if you have something to say about it they should try writing a colum that is eloquent and argues a valid point without such vitriol.

Ohtheweatheroutsideistoocold · 20/12/2022 16:23

Pleasecreateausername13 · 20/12/2022 09:31

Because I think all vile narcissists should have shit thrown at them.

Well in which case I think Clarkson and piers Morgan would be first in the queue...

Why does he have to say anything?
Being Aggressive towards women like that is not on.
Best if he kept quiet.

Even his own daughter didn't back him up.

He's vile and he's got form this isn't his first time.
I bet he regrets it now. Nasty attention seeking creature.

Wouldn't bother me if he wasn't on TV again.

the80sweregreat · 20/12/2022 17:35

If a random journalist had written this about his daughter , would he find it acceptable?
I don't think he would

BaconAndAvocado · 20/12/2022 17:39

Clarkson is an utter scrote.

DeeCeeCherry · 20/12/2022 17:44

Thank you. I will complain today.

Also writing to MP here
www.writetothem.com/

Worth a try. This man and his publicising of his wank fantasy about the public sexual degradation of a woman is repulsive.

OmiOmy · 20/12/2022 19:45

Over 20,000 complaints!

The Sun should apologise to MM as well. Front page.
