to suggest that if you think what Clarkson said was a step too far (being polite) to complain to IPSO?

www.ipso.co.uk/complain/complaints-form/

IPSO will publicise how many complaints they receive.

If everybody who thinks what Clarkson wrote was unacceptable, even if he dislikes MM (and he's under no obligation to like her) contacts IPSO, then it sends a message. And may dissuade editors from signing of on vileness like this in future.

Worth a try, surely.

If people remain quiet, it looks like it's ok.

Complaining to IPSO is better than tweeting your opinion, because it doesn't publicise the paper or Clarkson. Both of them relish the publicity.

If they said "transwomen should be stripped naked and have shit thrown at them and they are worse than child murderers", then there might be an issue.

But it doesn't need to be that extreme of an opinion for people to find it hugely offensive.

There are lots of opinions on here that, if posted on other sites, would be torn apart for how offensive they are.

@Trixiefirecracker you say free speech isn't the same as hate speech.

Where do you draw the line over what is hateful and what's not? Some people think it's okay to call trans women "women" and that not doing so is hate speech.

I'd rather everyone had the chance to show the world who they are.

Probably not where it facilitates an old white misogynist shock jock to stir up hatred against a mixed race woman who has received death threats from right wing extremists (as stated repeatedly by the security services).

The notion that Clarkson is exercise his right to speak freely about a deeply held belief as opposed to shit stirring for the clicks is laughable.

However he and Morgan got their lunch with the Queen so presumably the Palaces are on side. After all they are also happy to pick up the tab for the nonce's private security but not the mixed race daughter in law.

So how is an opinion - especially one that clearly involves violence - when does that cross the line?

Clearly different for different people - but at what point does it cross the line?

It is true though - I think there are people on here who want Clarkson to face consequences but who get upset with people who think Rowling should be cancelled.

But I haven't seen Rowling express such awful views

Weirdwonders · 20/12/2022 08:54

No. As I don’t read The Sun I’d never have been aware of it if it hadn’t been re-tweeted into my timeline by numerous people of the same ilk using him to launder their reputations

thelobsterquadrille · 20/12/2022 09:06

Well that's the thing isn't it @cakeorwine - whether something crosses a line or not is very subjective.

My point isn't that I find what's Jeremy's said to be okay - it's more that there are lots of opinions on here that other people consider to be just as offensive.

Do you not want him condemned for it or do you want his vile words buried under the carpet

Because I think all vile narcissists should have shit thrown at them.

Because I think all vile narcissists should have shit thrown at them.

Fundamentally, the kind of society that throws shit at people isn't a great place to live.

Particularly pervy gross misogynistic ones that strip women naked for the purpose.

After all, you'd probably not like it if someone decided you were a vile narc who needed shit thrown at them and other people agreed.

CakesAndCookies · 20/12/2022 09:47

Thank you, done!

Also freedom of speech is not exempt from consequences of said speech, hence why we have rules such as inciting violence/racism etc and similar ones.

I don't disagree.

But there are lots of opinions on MN that are considered hugely offensive by other sections of society, and I'm wondering whether all the posters complaining here would be as happy if thousands of people complained about their opinions.

MN are quick to take down offensive posts. If JC or any other poster wrote what he did on MN, there would be complaints and the comment would be quickly deleted.

JC is writing in a national paper as a public figure. If he or someone else write something grossly offensive why can't people complain? Freedom of speech, as others have said, is not freedom from consequence.

You're a really good argument for why the internet shouldn't allow anonymity.

Absolutely terrifying people like you walk among us.

While I obviously don't endorse a word Jeremy Clarkson wrote, I think he has every right to do so and for it to be published.

It's okay to write offensive opinions, in fact the concept and principle of free speech depends on it.

Be careful what you wish for.

Signing up to IPSO and the Editor's Code is voluntary. There's no obligation on the Sun to do so- they could withdraw and publish whatever they like, within the law.

Coming from a clearly non outraged person, or is throwing shit at someone a chilled out activity?

Still don’t understand what facetious means then?

Go look at a dictionary.

I had to reluctantly open the website. Seems he has a weekly column published 2/12, 9/12 so I'm guessing 16/12.

I just put the title as "his name column".

And I attached a screenshot that's doing the rounds. Will attach it here if you want to add it.

Nasty old man needs to keep his scatalogical fantasies to himself.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 20/12/2022 10:19

Done. I'm appalled at what Clarkson wrote, but even more so by the editor who allowed this hate speech to be published.

Ooh, look at the the edgelord with his big fancy language. Us dumb women could never understand what the word facetious means, it's far too advanced for our underdeveloped brains.

Mangogogogo · 20/12/2022 10:24

Its blatantly obvious the game of thrones reference

Merryoldgoat · 20/12/2022 10:25

Ffs - supporting free speech doesn’t prevent you from the consequences.

He HAS been allowed to say it - it was published. He’s not free from censure because of it.

I can’t call a colleague a cunt without expecting consequences.

And so what if it IS GoT reference. It was a shocking and awful scene and the point was that even though Cersei had been a disgusting human we didn’t revel in her downfall - we were disgusted at her humiliation.

A man describing basically a wet dream involving the humiliation of a woman who has done nothing to him is a disgrace.

He hates her more than Rose West - I don’t know how people can defend him.
