Pushchair fight on bus

Partygal · 19/12/2022 22:25

After picking my child up from her child minder today, I arrived the bus stop to find two women with buggies waiting.

Knowing that the driver wouldn’t let three of us on, I walked round the corner to the previous stop and got on there.

When it arrived at the next stop, sure enough only mum was allowed on - the other was told to wait 30 minutes for the next bus. I was screamed at and called a cunt and a queue jumper by one mum who tried to shove me off the bus.

I don’t think I did anything wrong, nor did the police when they turned up after being called by the driver.

What the fuck is wrong with people?

OP posts:
susiesuelou · 20/12/2022 11:31

Oh and obviously the police dont care, they are there for people breaking the law not just being general shit heads whilst out and about.

Pretty sure trying to "shove someone off a bus" might fall under common assault. 🤷‍♀️

It's because benefitting at the expense of someone else doesn't sit comfortably with some people.

The OPs intentions were clear and she acted on the presumption that someone would be missing out

This.

If I was in the same scenario as OP I would think 'dammit, if I was at the earlier stop I would be able to get on this bus' but I wouldn't do it because I'm not a selfish prick who thinks that their time is more valuable than everyone elses.

Assuming this is a genuine post (which I doubt) the difference between OP's example and pretty much every PP's example is that in the PP's they're saying 'I know my regular route well enough to know it gets busy so now I walk straight to an earlier stop so I can ensure I get on and get a seat' whereas in OP's it's 'I went to my usual stop, saw two women with prams waiting and instead of thinking about how I'd have to fold mine or wait for the next bus I decided I deserved the spot more and walked to the previous stop'. Had OP gone straight to that stop she wouldn't have been unreasonable but she went knowing these women would want to get on and didn't even try and make sure there was room for all of them.

I also don't get the whole 'those women could've done it too' - why would they? OP only went because they were waiting at that stop and as others have said, when does it stop? Do they all keep walking miles in the opposite direction of where they actually want to go just so they can get on first?

No it's not illegal but there are plenty of shitty things a person can do that aren't illegal and this was one of them. All of us could 'work smarter not harder' in lots of scenarios but it wouldn't make the world a very nice place to live.

Should she have yelled at you, called you names and pushed you? No, that was also unreasonable but I can see why she wasn't thrilled.

This really, and I wonder how many people applauding OP for what she did would be quite so congratulatory if they were on the recieving end of it or something similar - or would it all be unfair then because it happened to them?

HairyKitty · 20/12/2022 11:37

Debatable. However anyone who want to
complain about it could have done the exact same thing themselves. Going to the other stop involved effort so can’t really be called queue jumping.

PalmLady · 20/12/2022 11:38

So you thought you deserved a place on the bus more than the toddlers who had been waiting in line?
Hope you had a good reason for it.

I'm quite surprised there's been over 400 comments on a thread that's clearly a load of bullshit!

If this had happened to me I would think, "damn, I should have done that!" I wouldn't think that the other woman was obligated to stay at my stop and not utilise the other stops available to her just because I'd been waiting and hadn't thought of it myself. That, to me, would be entitled.

PhoenixReincarnated · 20/12/2022 11:44

I can't condemn you OP because I've done the same thing myself. I arrived at the bus station with my wheelchair using service user and a couple were there with their pram. The buses on this route are 95% small with only a wheelchair space. While waiting for the bus they made it pretty clear, through conversation with other passengers, that they had no intention of putting the pram down. As it happened the bus didn't turn up so we had to wait for the next one. I was debating whether or not to 'pull rank' potentially getting into an argument About 10 minutes before it was due I thought sod it and walked to the bus stop before this one. I took a risk as on this route town is in the middle of the route so there could have been a pram on going into town (most of them get off at the bus station so not usually a problem). I got lucky and was able to get on and I have to admit I'd do the same thing again.

The couple did get lucky because the type of bus it was it had two single seats at the front and the driver allowed them to get on with the pram even though it partially blocked the gangway but that wasn't guaranteed.

It's the entertainment value. A bit like 'Four Weddings, a Funeral and a Fight' with a good old virtual punch-up.

I mean, the horror. It's PUBLIC transport: the very idea of anyone over thirty having to use it ...

LorW · 20/12/2022 11:45

All the fold down your buggy comments, not sure where she would have stored it? All the busses round here only have one small luggage area that generally has the tray with the newspapers sat in it, but it’s only a shallow one, couldn’t store a stroller in it let alone a big pram, I had to take a bus a couple of weeks ago and realised just how shit public transport is for people with young children, nobody wanted to hold my baby when I was trying to fold down a pram on a crowded bus, I had to sit her on the floor as had no choice, then the pram had to sit on the floor in the pram bit and pretty much took up just the same amount of space so I was raging that I was made to fold it.

Cuppasoupmonster · 20/12/2022 11:48

@PhoenixReincarnated absolutely nobody would begrudge a wheelchair user from doing this - the spaces are actually meant for wheelchairs not buggies.

This.

Same here. I would have been miffed but thought "Why didn't I think of that".

It's still always a lottery though. OP could have travelled to the other stop only to find that there were two buddies on the bus already and she couldn't get on anyway - and those two buggies might have get off at the next stop so the women got on.

Life's rich tapestry etc etc etc

Emotionalsupportviper · 20/12/2022 11:51

*BUGGIES, not buddies

(I bliddy proof-read it, too! 😬)

crimbocountdown · 20/12/2022 11:56

Morally dubious that's for certain - you knew they were waiting - where's the mother to mother solidarity here?? You had time to fold your buggy ready for their stop but chose not to.....

This reflects very poorly on you OP sorry

Crunchymum · 20/12/2022 11:58

I bliddy proof-read it, too

Are you sure???? 😂

WhatAmIDoingWrong123 · 20/12/2022 12:00

I always use the first stop on the route when I’m out with my pram to make sure I get a space. I don’t think you did anything wrong and no to folding up prams on busses, I wouldn’t do that either. What am I supposed to do with my baby while I’m busy deconstructing a pram while I’m boarding the bus and also getting off the bus? Nope, nope, nope.

starfishmummy · 20/12/2022 12:01

There was no guarantee that the OP would have got on at the earlier stop anyway, the bus coukd already have been full. She took a risk and it paid off.

However her only mistake was that she was recognised.

Hellsmovie · 20/12/2022 12:01

You beat the system. Good work

NewSee · 20/12/2022 12:02

I don’t see this as being any different to when you’re at a checkout, they open a new till and the person at the back of the queue gets served first at the new checkout. She’s simply joined a new queue. It’s fine.

No that’s fucked up too.

If there’s a queue and another till opens up then the people at the front go to that till first.

Why should someone who’s just joined the queue jump ahead of someone who’s been waiting the queue for a long time.

It’s entitled behaviour.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 20/12/2022 12:03

where's the mother to mother solidarity here

It's a myth. Just read any SAHM vs. WOHM thread ...

Bananarama21 · 19/12/2022 22:34

You were an arsehole, she waited longer than you in the freezing cold. You could uave folded you buggy down.

How is OP an arsehole? She is clever thats all. The other women could have folded the buggy too. What a pathetic silly comment to make. Were you one of the other 2 women I wonder?
Well done OP.

I was just about to use it as an example of other CF behaviour. Grin

PhoenixReincarnated · 20/12/2022 12:11

I do wonder what posters who object to folding their prams down* would have done when buses still had steps. There were plenty of parents (myself included) who managed to use public transport and deal with prams/babies/toddlers/shopping.

*obviously there are exceptions to the rule eg disabilities

NewSee · 20/12/2022 12:11

Remember there were people hoarding toilet roll during covid and filling up Jerry cans when they thought there was a petrol shortage (one poster said she needed lots incase she needed it to cut her grass 😳).

There have been many times recently where I’ve been shocked how selfish people are.
