Trifle is NOT trifle unless it has jelly, I don't care if its "common" or not.

Watching Marry Berry, she's made trifle with juice, sherry, custard and cream, no jelly. The cake soaked in jelly is literally the best bit!!!
Normally I like to be a bit fancy in the kitchen for special occasions but this is a hill I'm prepared to die on.

Vinegar on chips

MaryShelley1818 · 19/12/2022 22:11

I make a pear and ginger trifle which is to die for....no jelly in it sorry! Lol.

I do love jelly though!

Crisp sandwiches for me, Greggs sausage rolls and Tunnocks Teacakes.

Itloggedmeoutagain · 19/12/2022 22:11

Trifle contains jelly
It's not up for discussion

PearlclutchersInc · 19/12/2022 22:12

Chip butties. With proper butter.

My grandma made trifle this way, and it was amazing. No jelly needed.

Flapjackquack · 19/12/2022 22:13

So the sponges were just soaked in juice and sherry then custard and cream on top? Sacrilege! #justiceforjelly

MissyB1 · 19/12/2022 22:14

Absolutely no jelly in my trifle thank you very much!!

CMOTDibbler · 19/12/2022 22:14

Jelly all the way here. And blancmange.

Livinginanotherworld · 19/12/2022 22:14

No jelly 😱

Zanatdy · 19/12/2022 22:14

I love trifle at Christmas. Absolutely has to have jelly in it - no debate

Margo34 · 19/12/2022 22:15

Jelly all the way here. And blancmange.

🙌 Is it even a trifle if it doesn't have blancmange and jelly and custard and cream?

CoffeeBoy · 19/12/2022 22:16

I agree but apparently jelly is only for nursery trifle!

JonahAndTheSnail · 19/12/2022 22:16

After Eights at Christmas. I remember my first boyfriend being so offended that my Mum offered us a couple of boxes to take home one year as apparently they're very WC?!

I'm trying to imagine a trifle made without jelly, presumably it still has fruit?

MilkyYay · 19/12/2022 22:16

Jelly = essential.

JulesJules · 19/12/2022 22:17

My Yorkshire grandma never put jelly in her trifle on the grounds that it was taking up space that should have been more cream.

TrashyPanda · 19/12/2022 22:17

My mum never put jelly in trifle either!
swiss roll slices and tinned fruit in juice, plus custard and cream.
the taste of childhood Xmas dinner!

Galarunner · 19/12/2022 22:18

My mum used to make a fantastic no jelly trifle, a layer of raspberries, or apricots stewed in a bit sherry. Loads nicer than jelly.

DreamingOfAGreenChristmas · 19/12/2022 22:18

Jelly in trifle is horrid.
Horrid, horrid, horrid.

FixItUpChappie · 19/12/2022 22:19

I’m making a trifle for the first time this Christmas (I’m not in the UK) and having not eaten many of them either I’m watching with interest about which way to go 😋

berrycakeandcustard · 19/12/2022 22:20

But, but, but .... it's not a trifle without jelly!! A trifle has to have jelly!

Trifle (with all the lovely jelly) is one of my favourite things about Christmas, can't wait😋

LolaSmiles · 19/12/2022 22:20

No jelly in the trifle here either I'm afraid.

Blancmange brings back awful food memories so that's a no to me as well.

JonahAndTheSnail I like a good After Eight. Didn't know they were working class. One of my grandparents used to tell us that they'd got some 'posh chocolates' for Christmas.

tedgran · 19/12/2022 22:20

No jelly for me, but DH loves it !

Purplechicken207 · 19/12/2022 22:23

I don't like trifle but I assumed it always had jelly in?

Personally I like cheap ice cream....can't stand really creamy tasting ones! And while I don't like it, I can't help but think custard is such an old person or we grew up with so little thing too. (Fully prepared to take heat for this and for the record yes I grew up in a household with virtually no disposable income, and money trouble at times. But it reminds me of rank school dinner puddings that looked and smelled like vomit 😳)

ChicagoBears · 19/12/2022 22:23

Jelly all the way!

Vaccine001 · 19/12/2022 22:26

Jelly of course! Being judged by class and wealth in the UK has to die.
