Trifle is NOT trifle unless it has jelly, I don't care if its "common" or not.

Watching Marry Berry, she's made trifle with juice, sherry, custard and cream, no jelly. The cake soaked in jelly is literally the best bit!!!
Normally I like to be a bit fancy in the kitchen for special occasions but this is a hill I'm prepared to die on.
What other things are a must have for you but are considered a bit "common"

I think the difference is that trifles with jelly are suitable for kids, whereas sherry trifles are for a more mature palate…

Silvers11 · 19/12/2022 22:57

Ordinary Trifle = jelly and I wouldn't thank you for it in a gift.
Sherry Trifle - NO Jelly. The cake sponge gets soaked in the sherry and maybe some fruit juice if the sherry on its own is too much. But trifle sponges, the fruit and the custard all come of tins/packets so it's still 'common'

Ramble0n · 19/12/2022 22:58

It has no right to be called a trifle without jelly.

SKIPWAY · 19/12/2022 22:58

@HitMeWithAHotNoteAndWatchMeBounce in the grand scheme of things it really doesn't matter. However, I was surprised at my own outrage that it was suggested to me trifle with jelly was "common"
I am triumphant that my trifle WITH jelly shall take centre stage on the dessert table I may even sprinkle on some hundreds and thousands and wear my common badge with pride (knowing I am indeed correct)

Not necessarily - we make the custard for ours and it’s summer here, so fresh fruit is plentiful.

CathyBoardman · 19/12/2022 22:59

It's not trifle without jelly. Might as well not have custard.

But for people who want a sherry trifle, you’re not correct.

Labraradabrador · 19/12/2022 23:01

Surely traditionally trifle would not have had jelly? Was it the 60s/70s when all things gelatin were fashionable?

to each their own,but I think jelly is disgusting. Out homemade truffles never co trained it, so I always thought it was a cheap supermarket thing

Yarnosaura · 19/12/2022 23:01

Jelly and set Birds custard are the heart of the trifle, and need to provide a loud squelch when dished up.

And I prefer Bisto to 'proper' gravy.

I was surprised Mary Berry used tin pears, none of my family like them. I saw Jamie Oliver using them on his programme too recently. Always those crunchy hard bits in them where they've not got the pips out!

I love tinned pears Blush
Also tinned peaches with custard
And tinned tomatoes on toast

I'll be ok if ever there is a fresh food shortage Grin

Shodan · 19/12/2022 23:02

The sherry trifle I have on order from M and S has a compote, dontcha know.

I am saddened by the lack of jelly, but feel that the sherry part will more than make up for it. So very retro.

On that note- I saw that Mozzas are selling Birds Eye trifle packets. I might just get one for a later date. For the jelly, obvs. And the nostalgia.

Blancmange is gross and shouldn't be anywhere near a trifle, jelly or no jelly.

JustBkind · 19/12/2022 23:03

Definitely has jelly in it because why would the shops version have it in otherwise?

My late grandma always made it with jelly, tinned fruit, birds custard and whipped cream on top with crushed up Cadbury flake to decorate. Still do it this way now and would never change it!! To me it’s not about being rich, poor or common, it’s about tradition, so do what you feel is right and enjoy!

fmpc · 19/12/2022 23:03

Jelly (yeuch) was not part of the original trifle recipe

I don’t mind no-jelly trifles or fancy trifles with non-standard ingredients….but NOT at Christmas. Has to have jelly at Christmas.

I agree. Fine to go all avant garde with your trifle at any other time of year.

Ramble0n · 19/12/2022 23:07

I don't like fruit in trifles. Jelly and swiss roll, thick set custard, whipped cream and a few sprinkles on top.

SirenSays · 19/12/2022 23:08

Jelly is amazing, it's always ruined in trifle with the soggy wet cake.

As long as no one is putting beef, peas and onions in it I guess it's OK

Beef, pea and onion trifle is a bit Heston.

Upwiththelark76 · 19/12/2022 23:12

Of course a trifle has jelly! Best bit and with tinned fruit and sponge suspended in that jelly too !

Hmmph · 19/12/2022 23:12

Trifle is Swiss roll, jelly & tinned fruit, custard, dream topping, sprinkles and glance cherries.

After Eights are working class? Some that's why I couldn't find them in Waitrose today!

Waystation · 19/12/2022 23:13

I make sherry trifle with jelly, I’m now fearful that people think I’m common………

FangsForTheMemory · 19/12/2022 23:14

Trifle is a disgusting mess anyway. Give me my Christmas pudding!

Underroad · 19/12/2022 23:17

I am totally aware that society dictates that a trifle shouldn’t contain jelly in order not to be common. But…but…BUT… TRIFLES SHOULD HAVE JELLY. I feel like a jelly-less trifle would probably be lovely but is a completely different dessert.

Then again, I also feel that the cream should actually be dream topping and that it should be sprinkled with a generous amount of hundreds and thousands, so…

SKIPWAY · 19/12/2022 23:17

@Yarnosaura yes the suction and squelch all part of the experience lol
