Hi everyone

My Auntie had a fall this morning and has seriously hurt her hip. Luckily she was close enough to the bed to get herself up on it.

999 said it is not an emergency and to contact 111, she was in severe agony and is 78 years old. I rang 111 who after assessing her, decided she did indeed need an ambulance.

I had originally offered to take her to the hospital but she lives on the top floor of a maisonette, and is unable to sit up (so a car journey would be no good and I would be unable to carry her to the car anyway. I did get help but she declined due to the inability to even sit up).

Her husband is disabled so isn't much use (I mean this in the nicest possible way, he is trying his best) other than keeping an eye on her.

So we could be waiting hours for an ambulance but in the meantime she is soaked through on the bed due to urinating on herself. I am going there in the next 30 minutes.

Is it safe to roll her to change the sheets to make her more comfortable? I don't like the idea of her lying in a soaking bed while she waits. I am also scared of causing more pain/damage by moving her. We do not know what's wrong, she thinks it may he her hip. I just don't know what to do. I have never experienced this kind of thing.

Her partner has managed to change her underwear but when the bed is so wet, it wouldn't really make a difference.

Thanks for the update OP. Hope both Auntie and Mum will be okay.

CrackersCheeseAndWinePlease · 21/12/2022 11:50

So glad she's at the hospital. Wishing her a speedy recovery, hope your mums okay too x

Dodecaheidyin · 21/12/2022 12:06

I agree with PP, with levels of 26 your mum's ketones need checking immediately.

CuriousMama · 21/12/2022 12:10

Thank goodness. Bless her downplaying 😞
You need to try and relax once you've had your mum seen to. Your immune system may be low with all the stress.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 21/12/2022 12:15

I'm relieved your Aunt has been taken in after such a distressing time
As your Mum is T2 I'm guessing she has an infection with glucose levels of 26

Darkoutsideclosethecurtains · 21/12/2022 12:46

So glad to hear your Auntie has been taken to hospital at last and hope treatment gets underway. Thinking of you and sending warm regards. You've a lot on your plate still, hope your Mum also gets help soon.
Take time to yourself when you can x

Good morning, apologies for the delay in updating - I know you have been worried.

Ambulance arrived around 11.30pm. Aunt tried to play it all down ffs!! She has been taken and they hope to get her seen to at some point today.

Meanwhile, I have been dealing with health problems of my Mum. Sugar levels of 26, wetting herself, diabetic type 2. Have got a urine sample and waiting for nurse to call back with the results. Hoping it is a UTI to rule out anything else as if it's not, I am going to have to take her to hospital tonight.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and help, you have been amazing.

I will of course, keep you updated.

Thank goodness, you have both been in my thoughts. 💐

Silvers11 · 21/12/2022 12:53

So glad that your Aunty has finally been taken to hospital. Hope she makes a good recovery. Read in the paper about another elderly lady who fell in a care home (also in Wales) and was waiting for 25 hours lying on a wooden floor for an ambulance. Absolutely appalling

Re your Mum - you need to get her seen to immediately and not wait. BSs of 26 are very high and very dangerous. She'll need Insulin ( temporarily) to bring those levels down as quickly as possible. Please don't delay. Hope she will be ok too.

Pearfacebanana · 21/12/2022 13:06

So glad she is in, I hope she gets seen as quickly as possible.

LakieLady · 21/12/2022 13:22

Thank goodness she's finally in hospital.

What an utter nightmare, and thank goodness you were on hand to help, OP.

I hope she's treated and back home asap.

rainbowstardrops · 21/12/2022 13:37

Thank goodness she's now in hospital and I hope your mum gets better soon too.

My heart goes out to you with all this worry Flowers

Mummyratbag · 21/12/2022 13:42

So relieved for you all. Hope she is comfortable and the delay hasn't caused long term problems. Good wishes to you, your aunt and uncle and of course your mum.

TheChinkOfaGlass · 21/12/2022 13:45

Her UTI test is clear so not that, so off we go to hospital. Doc referred details to the triage who will call us. Not sure how this works.

Metformin not bringing it down

As someone who lives in Australia, I hear you. It’s not perfect, but it’s better than the Uk. We still have ambulance issues, but it’s not as bad as the Uk. We might not be able to see our preferred GP for a few days but we can get in to see someone. Ok, it costs money. But there are concessions for the poorer and most people can afford the extra costs. It’s just in the Uk that people are against it.

We moved here from Singapore. Get cancer? Face a bill of several hundred thousand dollars and your family have to chip in to pay over 20 years (quote from a colleague). I’d rather live here, pay a bit more tax, pay a bit more at point of consumption and (hopefully!!!!) have a more sustainable system.

Defiantlynot41 · 21/12/2022 14:05

Metformin won't bring blood sugar levels as high as that down - she needs insulin and some medical intervention to find the cause of the high blood sugar. Usually an infection- if I have even a cold my sugars increase rapidly and more severe infections have been awful.

OP you must be exhausted- I hope you can take a moment to look after yourself within all this.

Unsureofitall · 21/12/2022 15:56

I really feel for you OP. Hope everything is sorted and your mum is feeling better by Christmas so you are able to relax a bit.

MenopausalMe · 21/12/2022 16:36

Oh gosh you are going through it at the moment Flowers Glad your aunt is now with the nhs, hope they are able to sort your mother.

justasking111 · 21/12/2022 17:02

You've all been through the wringer. Hope your Mum is sorted ASAP and aunt is comfortable.

IncessantNameChanger · 21/12/2022 18:07

@TheChinkOfaGlass you are having the week from hell.

Is there anyone looking after you? I'm glad your Aunt is now in safe hands and I hope your mum is sorted too. Life is very unfair sometimes. I hope you get your feet up soon and your blood pressure is OK after all this stress.

Anyway, lots of us are sending you strength, positive thoughts and viper hugs. Although I'm not much of a viper so you can have a virtual real hug, cup of tea and foot rub. Tell me your woes and I will make comforting remarks and top up your gin while you doze off on the sofa 🤗

TheChinkOfaGlass · 21/12/2022 21:55

Aunt now has covid but x rays shown she has nothing broken so they are keeping her in until she is able to walk, stand and make herself a cup of tea lol

Mum has pneumonia and we have been in a and 2 for 10 hours. Brother has just swapped with me so I am going to bed!
