AIBU to think this might be it for the UK and will never get better?

I am sorry for a very pessimistic view, but I feel we are stuck in a downward spiral in the UK. Is it just me, or does anyone else think that we will be stuck in this loop with the effects of Brexit and a decade of austerity taking decades to ever recover from (if ever?).
If anyone has a better outlook, please let me know.

No to be honest I think there are always good and bad times. I know people from all different countries and they all have troubles even if they may be dealing with certain things better. Hold on x

Sarahcoggles · 19/12/2022 10:58

@helford so if I migrant can get here, and access free healthcare and education easily, why is the UK such a dump? Free healthcare and education without any legal entitlement to it sounds quite a good deal to me.

Which begs the question, why are there so many threads on MN saying other countries are so much better? Seriously, the way people talk, you'd think everyone would head to France, Belgium, Portugal, Spain , Germany etc given half a chance. Yet migrants travel through those paradise countries to come to shitty old UK.

midgetastic · 19/12/2022 11:07

Most European countries have many more refugees than the uk - but of course those especially who speak a bit of English will prefer the uk

And just because we are not as bad as war torn Somalia or climate damaged Egypt- that's hardly something to be proud of !

But they don't only come to the UK! A large number of European countries have larger numbers of migrants than the UK. Sweden, Germany, France, Spain etc etc. It's not all about the UK.

@Goodgrief82

No but neither do i bury my head in the sand, its only by acknowledgement and then action that anything improves.

Someone once asked "what has improved since 2010?" no answers from the Toryfanboys

So to be clear. You don’t wrong your hands in front of your children about the doom but you don’t stick your head in the sand.

What does that mean in practise? Does not sticking your head in the sand mean you debate about it on mumsnet?

I’m not prone to depression, have forgotten about Covid & to my DD, the world & her life is a fluffy cloud of loveliness!

However, deep in me, I feel pessimistic about the future of the U.K. no one but me(& now Mumsnet!) knows I feel like this & all my friends see me as the happy, positive one.

I want my DD to grow up resilient & happy with a ‘this too shall pass’ attitude but although I am happy in my own little bubble, the future to me looks a little bleak.

@StarDolphins when you say “the future looks bleak”. Do you mean you future? Your DD’s future? Or society? Or the economy?

For what it’s worth, I don’t see any of the future in respect to the above looking bleak (of course not knowing you personal circumstances but in a general sense!)

Andsoforth · 19/12/2022 11:27

We had an illusion of wealth built on exploitation of the resources and labour of the developing world, and that is changing. Consumerism has brainwashed us all into thinking that happiness lies in the acquisition of things, and that we have no intrinsic worth beyond our work. It’s a natural extension to blame the misfortunes of others on themselves, instead of demanding better governance. Meanwhile politicians and princes learned a thing or two from corrupt 3rd world dictators.

Don’t get depressed about it Op, get angry.

Sounds like a (poor) GCSE debate contribution.

no nuance. Just sweeping generalisations

Goodgrief82 · 19/12/2022 11:32

And when you say “get angry”

what are you actually doing with that anger?

@Sarahcoggles Not great on reading & understanding posts are you.

Language, family connections, inability to return economic migrants, who then stay here, work illegally, don't pay tax on income but use public services.

But you are happy with that.

Oh give over with the false narrative

Most migrants - economic or not - will work and pay taxes if you let them

Immigrants are paying more into the system than British born people

Stop blaming those who have virtually nothing and blame the thief's who hoard wealth and the politicians who help them

Heresme33 · 19/12/2022 11:43

Can't get a drs appointment the meds I take have been replaced with a cheaper version full of fillers which my body can not tolerate. Dentist have gone private which looks like the health service is going that way too. Should never have left the E.U millions lost in funding for various things people depend on. Goverment have not a fucking clue.

They have a clue how to look after themselves and their mates

I think people see immigrants and go to a certain idea.

We have loads of people moving here, using work visas, net migration is up.

I would separate out the current small boat issue as not all migration is non beneficial. This is one area where some countries can deal more positively with migration (work skills, visas and point systems).

PurpleButterflyWings · 19/12/2022 11:52

Gotta love these I HATE THE UK IT'S SO AWFUL threads. Every fucking week they're on here. The vast majority of people moaning will not ever do anything about, and will never leave.

And @Desperado40 people like you just moan and whinge and complain about how AWFUL this DREADFUL country is, but just blow hot air and do naff-all about it. Like every person who moans about this DREADFUL country, you will do NOTHING to change anything. The country, your town, your life, or your situation, you will JUST MOAN. Frankly, it's a disgusting attitude. You have no idea how privileged you are living in the UK.

I love how some people think life will be any different or any better in any other country. 'I went to Spain/Australia/Canada/Greece/South of France once, and it was sooo lovely, friendly people, lovely weather, soo relaxed. I'm gonna live there!' Yeah you were on HOLIDAY then. Totally different world actually living there. AND it's hilarious that you assume you can just waltz into another country willy nilly and say 'I'm here folks! I chose YOOOOOOOOOOU!' Like it's just THAT easy! 😂

As I say though, most people moaning will never leave the UK.

FFS these threads boil my piss. Angry

PurpleButterflyWings · 19/12/2022 11:53

I would say more of a bleak feel about society In general. Previously, I haven’t been affected by things (Covid etc - didn’t have any lasting thoughts on this). I’m just feeling more negative about the U.K.

Thinks that I’m feeling bleak about (not anticipating much improvement) are NHS, crime, public services, climate issues, working standards & just a general feeling of the people of the world today.

My life is good, I have my own home, a little savings, wfh, can feed & heat, my DD has a wonderful & fun life etc..

Until we need an ambulance! Having never called an ambulance for myself or been to A&E, I want the option to be there if needed.

@Thepeopleversuswork but why do any of them come, if it's so awful here?
That's the point I'm trying to make. I'm sick of people saying what a dump the UK is, when it clearly isn't. It's better than a lot of places, not just war-torn places like Syria, but perhaps nice places like Germany and France. Otherwise no one would ever come here.

helford · 19/12/2022 13:50

Most migrants - economic or not - will work and pay taxes if you let them

But Govt doesn't allow migrants to work without leave to stay, you don't think people come to to the UK and work illegally? there is no black economy, no modern slavery - ok dream on & wake up.

Immigrants are paying more into the system than British born people

Of course they are, huge benefit to the UK and one reason since Brexit the NHS is fucked, we & probably people like you, voted to kick em out.
