Just been body shamed by a random

Was out watching the football with my aunt's husband who is argentinian, so big day for him as a football fan. Jumped up when Argentina scored and put my arms in the air. I don't shave my armpits because I can't be arsed, no judgement towards those who do. I usually do when in a relationship but in single and embracing my body hair. Random guy told me 'mate you ever heard of a razor that's fucking rank' at which point I just rolled my eyes and didn't engage. He then continued to the bar, spoke to his mates and pointed at me whilst they all giggled. Made me feel so uncomfortable. Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but feeling really angry with myself for not saying anything to him. Just here to vent I guess and not sure what I'm expecting, but I just find it infuriating being shamed for hair that grows out of my body without me asking it to! Anyone else experienced similar or was I just unlucky?

That is unlucky. I haven't shaved for about 15 years and have never had a comment from a random.

To be fair it's never happened to me before either. It has probably bothered me more than it should.

Uhh, sorry that happened to you, what a prick.

I very rarely shave my armpits (or anywhere!), I was wearing a sleeveless top at a baby group recently and for some reason or another there was a lot of waving arms in the air. I kind of realised but then was just like, fuck it, and it was genuinely so great to not care - because why should we??

FOJN · 18/12/2022 21:08

You met an arsehole, not really unlucky as there seems to be quite a lot of them about.

We're never quick on our feet when we're taken aback but I wonder if he thinks his own armpit hair is gross? It would have been interesting to hear his answer to that question.

No woman owes a man smooth armpits.

Maybebabyno2 · 18/12/2022 21:09

He's a twunt, but where are you that it's warm enough to have your armpits out? #jealousinmywoolyhat

GhostBridezilla · 18/12/2022 21:10

What a wanker. Don’t give it another thought. Keep doing you and making stupid pathetic people uncomfortable.
for every one wanker there will be 10 other people thinking wow I wish I could do that or good for you. And another 19 who simply DGAS

suckinglem0ns · 18/12/2022 21:10

I think men who would normally not comment, comment when it's online or had booze down their necks. People are so rude and brazen on social media and where alcohol's been flowing.
You must know some people have such a strong reaction to women's body hair particularly armpits and legs. Practise some come backs? I know you shouldn't need to in the first place, but the reality is different to the ideals.

Pub!

diamondsarentagirlsbestfriend · 18/12/2022 21:10

They both sound like absolute a*holes. Nothing wrong with body hair we all have it. If it’s so disgusting in their opinion why aren’t they shaving theirs????
If it makes you feel any better I was asked by a work colleague last week when my baby was due??? I am not pregnant…. 🙄😳

Maybebabyno2 · 18/12/2022 21:13

Hulke · 18/12/2022 21:10

Pub!

I was in a pub last weekend and it was so cold we all had coats and scarfs on!! 🤣🤣

I don't bother keeping up with shaving, I do enjoy the feeling of tweezing so I like to grow it quite long then have a good session. If anyone said anything like this to me, it would prove they are an arsehole and nothing else.

Let that hair flow free! I saw someone with coloured pits the other day! I might try that in the summer!!

Ofcourseshecan · 18/12/2022 21:14

He’s an idiot. You can change your look, shave or let your hair grow, as you like. But he can’t change being an idiot.

Pixiedust1234 · 18/12/2022 21:17

Random guy told me 'mate you ever heard of a razor that's fucking rank'

Did you not ask him which brand of razor he uses on his own if they were so perfect?

No but I should have! It's very difficult to think of a comeback when you have a 6ft+ drunk guy towering over you.

I'm sorry this happened to you OP - people are arseholes. I shave so haven't been in this exact situation but I was a teacher at a "rough" school so have had more than my fair share of nasty comments on my appearance (if you ever want to know what's "wrong" with your appearance then work with uncontrollable teens (a personal highlight was "don't fucking follow me with your fucking tiny goblin feet"). My tactic is the confused questioning tactic - it removes their power, it makes them "explain the joke" so it's not funny anymore and makes them recognise how much of a prick they are. You walk away with your head held high and they either back down in embarrassment or work themselves into hysterics.

Prick: mate you ever heard of a razor that's fucking rank
You: (confused face) a what?
Prick: a razor
You: (confused face) I don't understand
Prick: a razor, for your arm pits
You: (confused face) Oh, I don't shave my armpits
Prick: yeah, you should
You: (confused face) why?
Prick: because it's fucking rank
You: (confused face) is it?
...and so on.

He won't be able to actually articulate an intelligent response. He's not managing to hurt you or offend you, no one is viewing him as witty or powerful. He just looks like an idiot (quite rightly). I've never found an insult that it doesn't work for.

Think of some really good comebacks, write them down in a letter addressed to 'drunk arsehole' or something. Then take it in the garden and burn it.

It's a little random method which has helped me in the past when I couldn't say what I wanted at the time

Mirabai · 18/12/2022 22:07

Just tell him to shave his head off.

Great post. It works, too.

(Sorry, but the ‘tiny goblin feet’ line made me laugh. I work with ‘interesting’ teens too, and they notice everything).

DuplicateUserName · 18/12/2022 22:24

They guy's an utter prick.

Straying off the point a bit but if you like your armpits hairy, why do you shave them when you're in a relationship?

thecatsmum12346 · 18/12/2022 22:26

What a prick. Ignore him, or ask him does he shave his big hairy balls

I don't particularly care if they're hairy or not, I just prefer when I'm in a relationship to shave them as it makes me feel more confident, similarly to wearing makeup on a date as opposed to when I'm working from home or wearing nicer clothes when meeting a friend than if I'm going to see my dad. It's just what I choose to do.

He's a dickhead Op - sorry you had to put up with that!

FaceLikeASmackedArse · 19/12/2022 17:50

Everyone is entitled to prefer body hair/no body hair if that's what they find attractive and aesthetically pleasing in a partner. But what really pisses me off is the disgust and belief that it's dirty and unhygienic if you're a woman with body hair. And that it's so vile that even if you don

I've heard women chastising other women for not shaving their bits bald because "pubes are just so unhygienic, yuck!"

Why is men's body hair OK on the hygiene front, but womens is 'rank'?

OP, it's not you, it's him. He's a cunt.

amyneedssleep · 19/12/2022 17:53

On the couple of times this has happened to me, I just take on a faux-concerned voice and say something like "Oh, I'm so sorry you aren't able to grow your own body hair."

Geranium1984 · 19/12/2022 17:56

I wonder what his armpits looked like 🤔
