Nearly broke my wrist this week opening a jar of strawberry jam. Had to literally change dinner plan at short notice yesterday as literally Could Not open the fucking pesto. Why???

Put the tip of a strong sharp knife under the lid and lift slightly so you hear a pop sound.

It has never failed me.

bellac11 · 16/12/2022 21:21

Put the lid part of the jar on the gas flame of the hob then open carefully with a tea towel so you dont burn yourself

it has actually hurt my chest in the past trying to open jars.

MadisonAvenue · 16/12/2022 21:22

I ease them with the bottle opener end of a basic can opener, they pop and then screw off easily. It doesn’t damage the lid and it closes perfectly afterwards.

VladmirsPoutine · 16/12/2022 21:22

Bang the lid on a hard surface a few times then have another go at it. I can't attest to whether aldi have particularly difficult lids on their products but this method works well.

fungibletoken · 16/12/2022 21:26

Similar to the above - bang a spoon around the edge a few times to make a few dents and break the seal. Hear a satisfying pop and you'll be grand!

Bluevelvetsofa · 16/12/2022 21:44

You can buy gadgets that fit round the lid and give enough grip to twist.

inappropriateraspberry · 16/12/2022 21:53

I put a spoon under the edge and lever it up until it pops. Breaks the air/vacuum seal and will then easily open.

bigbluebus · 16/12/2022 21:59

Run the lid under a hot tap. That should release the lid to enable you to twist it off.

DuckWithOneWing · 16/12/2022 22:00

I have a Quopener which is an amazing gadget to open jars easily

YoSofi · 16/12/2022 22:01

I had it with Aldi jam this week.

Tapped the lid on the edge of the worktop and it popped right off

Cherrysoup · 16/12/2022 22:02

Get the jar opener gadget, it’s blimmin’ miraculous. Releases the vacuum and jars then open easily.

Newlifestartingatlast · 16/12/2022 22:03

Ok…so brilliant MN of opening stuff

  1. blasted vanilla paste tubs - have 2 pots I can’t get open…rubber gloves and works.
  2. kenwood mixer- food processor attachment where the motor part cannot be twisted off bowl part
any wisdom..I’m on my own so no strong grips/hands to help 🙄
Bigoldmachine · 16/12/2022 22:05

I tried all the tricks, but in the end had to take 2 jars of Aldi strawberry jam back and swap them. When i explained to the cashier he had a little smile: “don’t worry I’ll open them for you”…. And then turned purple in the face and he couldn’t do it either. Three staff members tried. It turned into some sort of sword in the stone type challenge. Anyway, they swapped them and the new ones opened fine. My theory is the lid putting on machine did a batch too tight!

Yes! Aldi gherkins, we stock up on them, but neither me or DH can open them, I'm short on hand strength, but DH is no weakling. We manage with a boa constrictor, but thought it was strange that we don't have problems with any other brands.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 16/12/2022 22:08

Whack the lid of the jar with a rolling pin (or something wiughty like that). It will break the vacum and it should open easily then.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 16/12/2022 22:08

weighty

ShaunaTheSheep · 16/12/2022 22:16

You need a stab can opener like this

www.lawsonshop.co.uk/can-and-jar-openers/chef-aid-stab-can-opener/

Stick the pointy end up under the lid and lever up until you hear the seal <pop>

Honestly the best two quid you will spend.

OutDamnedSpot · 16/12/2022 22:27

I‘m a teacher. When I can’t open a jar, we have sandwiches for tea and the next day I take it to school and get my classes to pass it around until one of them can open it.

“Ask year 11” is now a mantra in my house.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 16/12/2022 22:28

you just need to whack the surface of the lid. No gadget needed.

Jellybean23 · 16/12/2022 22:28

The lids go on during manufacture while the product is hot. As it cools, the air under the lid contracts and pulls the lid down. That's the way the product is preserved - it creates a vacuum. Find the right item in your cutlery drawer that will slip under the lip of the lid a fraction and lever it out against the glass.

paintitallover · 16/12/2022 22:28

This is the best gadget. It's adjustable too:

Exactly right!
