Nearly broke my wrist this week opening a jar of strawberry jam. Had to literally change dinner plan at short notice yesterday as literally Could Not open the fucking pesto. Why???

Yes, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this!
They've also changed the curry sauce jars that have curry powder in a little plastic container on the top. It took me about 15 mins to get the plastic bit off the other day.

God why does everyone make it so hard. It’s just a vacuum seal which is easily broken with a bottle opener.

Well in my case I'm disabled and have very limited use of my left hand as well as weaker grip in my right hand

Buddrinker84 · 17/12/2022 05:56

Yes, I have been having trouble with aldi jars just lately, they are on ridiculously tight.

Msgrieves · 17/12/2022 06:08

I always just stab the lid in the middle with a knife. Not so useful if you want to reseal.

liveforsummer · 17/12/2022 06:24

I bought a rubber grippy jar opening device after this happened a few times - never looked back!

liveforsummer · 17/12/2022 06:26

This thing, great for bottles etc too. Because it's fully flexible you can open really small things too

I tried all the tricks, but in the end had to take 2 jars of Aldi strawberry jam back and swap them. When i explained to the cashier he had a little smile: “don’t worry I’ll open them for you”…. And then turned purple in the face and he couldn’t do it either. Three staff members tried. It turned into some sort of sword in the stone type challenge. Anyway, they swapped them and the new ones opened fine. My theory is the lid putting on machine did a batch too tight!

This made me lol 😂

I had a wine related nightmare recently when trying to remove the screw top and the bit which should break then you twist the lid off hadn't been cut enough so it was basically a metal prison for the bottle top.

spanktastic · 17/12/2022 06:39

Use the bottle opener part of a tin opener and it just pops, it releases the vacuum and the lid comes off easily, safer than stabbing it.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 17/12/2022 06:44

You need to tap the edge of the lid to distort it. You can even use a knife handle to dent the lid. You need to release the vacuum.

MiddleParking · 17/12/2022 06:48

Cheap food is quite often just cheap packaging. I can open fuck all from Aldi.

BarbaraofSeville · 17/12/2022 07:05

Tap the rim of the lid quite gently on the edge of the worktop. You might have to rotate it round and tap in a few places, but it doesn't take long and you don't have to tap very hard - the seal breaks easily and if you bang too much, you face the contents leaking out.

I read about this on here some time ago when looking for a solution to opening the massive Lidl jars of gherkins, which even DP cannot do and he's very much A Big Man With Big Strong Hands.

picklemewalnuts · 17/12/2022 07:22

@ByTheGrace I'm left pondering the relevance of the boa constrictor. Could you explain? Do you actually wrestle boa constrictors to strengthen your grip? Surely not.

OP, get a grip.

Letsbekindplease · 17/12/2022 07:27

Yea to this. I had a jar of bolognaise that I couldn’t open at all the other day. I nearly chapped my neighbour who is a PT to see if he could do it. Luckily i finally got ir after a lot of swearing.

ChillinwiththeVillains · 17/12/2022 07:44

@Newlifestartingatlast I have the same issue with vanilla paste. Last jar I didn’t do up properly so that I could easily access again. Forgot this time after first opening so it is inaccessible. Debating just chucking it. I do wonder if they actually think about the user when designing packaging (see also balance me skincare which is becoming harder to access- assume cost cutting but means I don’t buy some of their items now).

Put the tip of a strong sharp knife under the lid and lift slightly so you hear a pop sound.

It has never failed me.

This every time

SamphiretheTervosaurReturneth · 17/12/2022 07:59

You need to stop al the banging, heating, bending tips of knives and get some cheap and cheerful silicone jar openers. Every kitchen needs them!

Though the sane and sensible thing to do before they arrive is to use a can opener, as @spanktastic shows.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 17/12/2022 08:04

Just use a regular bottle opener to lift the edge until the vacuum seal pops; then it will turn easily.

OwlInTheMoss · 17/12/2022 08:09

Wow great tips!

We shop at Aldi and this week I've had two things that I couldn't open. A glass jar of pasta sauce, and then a bottle of squash.

I wondered if it's something to do with the weather conditions as I don't normally have any problem opening things.

SamphiretheTervosaurReturneth · 17/12/2022 08:20

A silicone thingy would open the squash Owl.

I have always had knackered hands, they, and the can opener, have made a huge difference. I even carry one with me, in my handbag. Sometimes bottles of juice have badly cut lids/twists. If I have my opener I am fine.

ForfuckssakeEXHstopbeingatwat · 17/12/2022 08:22

I keep an uninflated kids party balloon in the kitchen drawer. Makes a perfect gripper for jar opening. No need to buy gadgets.

bellac11 · 17/12/2022 08:29

I dont find silicon or rubber gloves help because you still need a good strength which I dont have

I also want to know how to open things like marmite/bovril once they're stuck on after use or even before use, its not the same techniques as discussed above

Quizzed · 17/12/2022 08:34

As previously stated a knife under the lid until you hear a pop then you will be able to open the jam or run it under hot water and then you will be able to open the jam. I always struggle to get Aldis jam open but both these methods work.
