To wonder why on earth people still buy from puppy farms?

Why oh why do people buy puppies from the likes of Kelly's Kennels and Douglas Hall Kennels?

This is where the poor puppies come from. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-32308177
Surely people know that you need to see the puppies mother before buying? Never mind the fact that these puppies won't be dna health tested.

Because they want a puppy now
or a rescue is ‘second hand’
they dont care about puppy farms
they are ignorant
the puppy is cute and they don’t want to leave it there to suffer

ive seen all the above

nutbrownhare15 · 16/12/2022 19:41

Fetishisation of particular breeds aka brands. Wanting a bargain. It often being the easiest way to get one as the farms don't care what type of buyer they sell to. Cheaper?

Msgrieves · 16/12/2022 19:45

Not everyone is middle class and settled and can afford the amount of money it takes to own "ethically". They still want a dog, they can buy a dog, so they will.

Lately I imagine most mumsnetters to be like my ex inlaws. Makes the site make more sense. Never used to be so stultifying.

Ease

nancydroo · 16/12/2022 19:47

Low income families want the joys of a dog too and otherwise it's not affordable when it's £3000+ for a dog. Rescue dogs are cheaper but try finding ones that will match with families who have children under teen years. Few and far between.
Also people want a dog for how it is going to benefit themselves not the actual dog and their experience.

SheWoreYellow · 16/12/2022 19:47

Because the people sounded really nice and they fell for the story about where the mother was. And by then they’d told the children it was all going ahead. Or they wondered, but thought that if they don’t ‘rescue’ the puppy from there then what will happen to it.

LastNCof2022 · 16/12/2022 19:48

Because they want a dog because it's cute, and don't care if other dogs will suffer to feed this trade. They are ignorant. I shall stop here or I'll get really angry.

maranella · 16/12/2022 19:48

Bottom line OP - because they're ignorant and selfish and they don't actually care where it comes from.

Itsthewhitehat · 16/12/2022 19:49

One of our rescues started life at Douglas hall. Her family only had her 2 weeks and decided she was too timid for them. They didn’t have time to put in the work with her. We fostered her at 11 weeks. She is 18 months now and a lovely dog.

i have fostered a lot of dogs in my time, never seen one as nervous as she was. Took so much work before she trusted us. After that, I couldn’t part with her.

Places like that break my heart. It’s really clearly a puppy farm (though in law it’s not) people still go because they can rock up, pick one and leave. No questions asked. It easy.

Luckyducker · 16/12/2022 19:50

I think a lot of people think they are doing right by buying from licensed breeders not realising that it is only breeders who produce multiple litters per year who require licences and therefore far from being best practice licences are a sign of a puppy farm.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/12/2022 19:50

Some posters seem to be saying it's only low income families who support this despicable trade. I wouldn't bet on it.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/12/2022 19:52

The question is like to ask is why oh why are places like this licensed.

I agree with you.

I got all the paperwork for our rescue. £1700 when they bought her.

thefiddlerselbow · 16/12/2022 19:54

Because you can wake up in the morning and decide spoilt Tarquin is missing out because he hasn't got a Puppy and get one by lunchtime. At least that's what my friend did.

Puppy farming is barbaric. I'm so upset that she did it. The puppy she got was ill, not the breed they stated and of course they're struggling with it.

HarlanPepper · 16/12/2022 19:55

Because they're a) thick and b) selfish.

Overthebow · 16/12/2022 19:58

Because they’re selfish/think it’s their right.

Overthebow · 16/12/2022 19:59

Thame as people who get those poor French Bulldog puppies.

Flamingogirl08 · 16/12/2022 19:59

Probably because it is so difficult to adopt a dog

nancydroo · 16/12/2022 20:04

Is it ethical to have pets at all?

AdventuringAway · 16/12/2022 20:04

God knows. Wilful ignorance and naivety I think, or just straight forward not caring - their want for a quick puppy is more important. I saw an Instagram post about their new puppy, lots of people questioning why they collected it in a service station, and they had a million and one reasons, seemed to me they just purposefully didn’t ask questions because they wanted a puppy.

This.

I bought a pedigree cat from a licensed breeder, parents and siblings seen in the lounge of their home only to find out it was the equivalent of a puppy farm (in cages in the garden which you couldn't see).

Only rescue pets since then but not everyone can get a rescue - the criteria can be so strict.

But yes, don't assume that you're not funding the same trade just because yours has a piece of paper and was reassuringly expensive

Talapia · 16/12/2022 20:26

I think people don't realise that a licensed breeder doesn't necessarily mean a good breeder.

In the same way, just because a dog is KC registered doesn't mean it is ethical to continue to produce that breed with the knowledge we have of how some dogs suffer due to flat faces, sloping backs, long spines etc.

Some farmers are good at selling on to fake family homes and produce bitches that are not the mother.

Laws and regulations around breeding need a massive overhaul, there needs to be standards that breeders must adhere to. Far greater transparency to enable the public o make informed decisions.

I do find it offensive that some people on here are blaming the poor and the 'thick.' .

Talapia · 16/12/2022 20:32

i've just looked at Kelly's kennels and see they sell Dachshund cross pug. Jesus Christ, how awful.

tabulahrasa · 16/12/2022 20:38

It’s got nothing to do with income or class... puppy farms aren’t selling cheap puppies, in fact they’re often more expensive than ethically bred dogs.

They are easily available though.

IntentionalError · 16/12/2022 20:39

Because they are ignorant morons. It really is as simple as that.
