To Think That Morecambe & Wise Are Not Funny

Now that it's almost Christmas it reminds me that we watched Morecambe and Wise Christmas Specials every year when I was a child.

My parents thought they were funny but I always found them cringeworthy.
I just don't find them funny at all and I don't understand how anyone can enjoy them, not to mention wishing they were still around to make even more Christmas Specials.

The shows were like a curates egg - good in parts.

stillvicarinatutu · 14/12/2022 00:38

Yabu!
Maybe it's my age , but I loved them .

araiwa · 14/12/2022 00:39

You're wrong

Buzzydent · 14/12/2022 00:40

Thank god I thought it was only me who didn't find them funny

LittleBearPad · 14/12/2022 00:40

Singin’ in the Rain is a joy. As is Andre Preview.

NumberTheory · 14/12/2022 00:41

I thought they were really boring when I was young. But watching them now I see the humour and find them really funny. I don’t think it’s because I’ve got boring as I’ve aged!

dolor · 14/12/2022 00:42

How dare you

SkylightSkylight · 14/12/2022 00:44

That's ok, it's not against the law (yet) to not appreciate good humour, you don't need to understand how other people do.

Changechangychange · 14/12/2022 00:46

The shows are about 50 years old by this point, it isn’t surprising they are no longer funny.

Do you think people were sitting around watching 1920s silent movies in the 70s with the reverence we have for this? Do we think our grandkids will be watching Derry Girls repeats in 2070? I hope not. Let it die.

TheShellBeach · 14/12/2022 00:52

What is funny about Ernie Wise announcing yet again that he's written a play which invariably turns out to be complete shite?

I don't even find that sketch where they're making breakfast funny. Yes, the timing is quite clever but the sketch isn't funny.

YABU

stillvicarinatutu · 14/12/2022 00:59

It was just gentle , funny humour.

And it appears that many big celebs of the day agreed .

My grandad was very much like Eric Morecombe , the silly humour and the pretending to catch stuff in a paper bag , he used to make himself laugh .
He was in the army and I wish he'd got in the entertainment core , he was silly and funny . He made me laugh every day , the same silly , gentle humour. Mi think people like Miranda revived that type of humour , the talking to camera , the silly stuff . You're still being unreasonable! They're of a time .

LittleBearPad · 14/12/2022 00:59

You seem quite enervated OP about this.

Love the breakfast sketch 🤣

stillvicarinatutu · 14/12/2022 01:03

You never found the fact two grown men laid in bed every night making jokes ? They were like Bert and Ernie in Sesame Street

The more 70s humour I watch now the more I appreciate it - comedians like Bob monkhouse, Tommy cooper , morecombe and wise , Larry Grayson, Dave Allen, Kenny Everett, they were truly funny and before their time .

stillvicarinatutu · 14/12/2022 01:05

I forgot les Dawson . He was also v v funny . Of his time but funny . The terrible piano playing was genius . And hard to do !

secretmeetingsundertrees · 14/12/2022 01:06

Reminds me of the speech development records tagline 'we may not be for you and that's fine'.
Comedy is subjective.
Just you asking what is funny about little ern talking about a new play what he wrote made me chuckle involuntarily...

stillvicarinatutu · 14/12/2022 01:07

Watch some old Dave Allen stuff op.

That could be made today . Better than shit like the mighty boosh.

Christmasbellsagio · 14/12/2022 01:07

YANBU, OP. I have never found them funny

stillvicarinatutu · 14/12/2022 01:07

And the fact they had Hollywood a listers taking part in their shit plays 😂

postcardpuffin · 14/12/2022 01:09

You’re not wrong, Op, they’re awful! We’ve got to the point where that 70s humour is really dated and of a completely different style. People love the nostalgia of it though.

I recently watched a few episodes of Fawlty Towers. As a kid I roars with laughter at it. Even ten years ago I would have sworn it was great classic humour. Right now it’s started to look crass and unfunny, full of cruel bullying jokes, casual racism and sexism and very much of its time. It’s not surprising that humour from nearly 50 years ago is starting to look a bit incomprehensible.

THANK YOU!!! We need to be friends OP.

Im always looking like this Confused when people Piss themselves laughing through their crap sketches. It’s not that I don’t like old school comedy, but I don’t I’d rest and what makes these 2 legends

stillvicarinatutu · 14/12/2022 01:11

See I think faulty towers is yes if it's time but still funny

Same as monty python and not the 9 o clock news .
I'd rather watch that than something like the recent Saturday night live with a trans man playing the piano with his cock while singing abkut what a great woman he is . 🤷🏻‍♀️

TheShellBeach · 14/12/2022 01:18
