To Think That Morecambe & Wise Are Not Funny

Now that it's almost Christmas it reminds me that we watched Morecambe and Wise Christmas Specials every year when I was a child.

My parents thought they were funny but I always found them cringeworthy.
I just don't find them funny at all and I don't understand how anyone can enjoy them, not to mention wishing they were still around to make even more Christmas Specials.

There's no answer to that.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/12/2022 01:31

Do you think people were sitting around watching 1920s silent movies in the 70s with the reverence we have for this?
Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton? Er.... well yes actually. Maybe only on a Sunday afternoon but yeah.

vera99 · 14/12/2022 01:32

I always take my wife morning tea in my pajamas. But is she grateful? No, she says she'd rather have it in a cup.

Op I think you're having a sense of humour failure.

It's Christmas. Cheer up.

I watched Harold Lloyd in 'Safety Last' recently, it was superb! Don't get me wrong, I love a dirty joke but I'm always impressed with comedy that relies on talent rather than a few fucks and cunts here and there. I preferred the Two Ronnies over Morecambe and Wise though.

Dita73 · 14/12/2022 02:12

I’m with you 100%. They weren’t funny along with many other things that are considered to be classics. I’ll start the list….
Last of the Summer Wine
Dad’s Army
Are you being Served?
All Carry On films
The Two Ronnie’s had a couple of funny bits but generally not great
and I will never understand for as long as I live why Mrs Brown’s Boys was ever made in the first place. Utter crap

Maldedos · 14/12/2022 02:12

I used to love M&W in their heyday.
Now if I watch a clip I too cringe.
I do think The Two Ronnies are still funny though.

HappinessAlley · 14/12/2022 02:14

Sorry, but this makes me laugh every time

stillvicarinatutu · 14/12/2022 02:16

Happiness I agree !

Also loved the two Ronnies !

stillvicarinatutu · 14/12/2022 02:20

So funny ....

Oldsu · 14/12/2022 02:22

There have been some classics that stand the test of time, making breakfast in time with the 'stripper' is one, not only is it funny but is very clever and excellent timing, Dame Shirly walking down stairs singing with a massive boot on one foot, Andre 'Preview' sketch Glenda Jackson and others getting stuck in, loved them and still do, they are certainly better then some the foulmouthed untalented lot on screen nowadays

Tollumi · 14/12/2022 02:24

People allegedly laugh at Mrs Brown's Boys. Humour is a weird thing.

M&W have a warmth and gentle humour - the breakfast sketch is engaging -but no, not funny to me, really.

I don't think that TV made me laugh until Friends came along, really, and that hasn't aged particularly well. Peep Show is still amazing, obv Grin

The correct answer of course is what do you think of the thread so far.....

RUBBISH...or if pushed..

ARSENAL ....

tbf my dad loved Ken Dodd now he really was rubbish.....

Bewitched005 · 14/12/2022 03:09

It depends on your age. Personally I don't find any of today's so called comedy amusing. Morecambe and Wise have to be viewed as of their time. I don't see any statues being erected to today's pathetic lot.
I didn't find Monty Python's Flying Circus funny, but M & W were totally groundbreaking and hilarious. Can anyone forget Angela Ripon, André Previn and Shirley Bassey in their sketches?

SammyScrounge · 14/12/2022 03:12

LittleBearPad · 14/12/2022 00:40

Singin’ in the Rain is a joy. As is Andre Preview.

The Stripper was another joy.

TheShellBeach · 14/12/2022 03:15

As was Bob Monkhouse. He used to crack a "joke" and wait for people to laugh and I used to think, "how is that man on the telly"?

Yes it does depend on your age back in that day the nation shared the experience together there were only 3 tv channels and video recordings so we watched together as a family what was on , or shared in a friend's house. Without the distraction of phones something that young people probably will never experience.I can still remember when Eric Morecambe appeared live on ITV's World of Sport - utter comedy magic.

Try watching g an audience with Bob monkhouse .....it was genuinely funny

stillvicarinatutu · 14/12/2022 03:28

What do you find funny op?

See I used to like Friday night live with Ben Elton but the recent come back was utter shite . (I do t find a man with tits and a dress playing piano with his cock so hung about how he's better than any women because he takes it up the arse very funny 🤷🏻‍♀️)

I do t like mrs browns boys .
I didn't like the mighty boosh.
I was t fond of peep show or little Britain , or league of gentlemen.

What comedy do you enjoy?

Sparklingbrook · 14/12/2022 03:46

I don’t find them funny either, but I’m a terrible person because I can’t stand Only Fools and Horses too.

I hate OFAH with a vengeance. David Jason gives me the creeps as well.

NeedToKnow101 · 14/12/2022 04:10

Love 'em.
