To realise I've completely misunderstood this Christmas dish

Bear with me as my excuse is I'm vegetarian.

With friends who were talking about their Christmas dinner. Said they were having a three bird roast, and I really thought the birds were all stuffed into each other.

I just couldn't figure out how that happened.

Oh dear. I never knew eating meat could get worse

HeddaGarbled · 13/12/2022 23:51

Why the fuck would you think it would be ground up into a pate like a sponge roll. That’s really weird

I expect that’s the Iceland version.

HintofVintagePink · 13/12/2022 23:52

Watch Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstal do Medieval Christmas at River Cottage if you can find it on YouTube. 12 bird roast! Incredible!

Definitely not pate. Each bird deboned and one inside the other.

WinterDeWinter · 13/12/2022 23:54

I think not technically 'stuffed inside one another' - they are deboned so become flattened out. Then the second smallest bird is wrapped around the smallest bird, and the next biggest one wrapped around that one, and so on.

Yes this is🤮 for anyone vegetarian. As an aside, I eaf land birds and water birds shouldn’t be combined, so duck / goose /?swan OR chicken / partridge / songbird or whatever 🤓

I wanted one year to create a vegetarian version of this, and decided as follows:

A raisin
Inside a cranberry
Inside a sprout
Inside a satsuma
Inside a red cabbage

I never got round to making it as Waitrose had a suitable nut-based alternative but would not be surprised it this combo is a vegan/vege best seller next year. All the Christmas flavours in a five-plant roast!

Ellmau · 13/12/2022 23:57

I also wonder what happens to the skin of the inside bird, I cant imagine the slimy rubbery skin all cooked inside the other birds is very nice.

They're skinned first. www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/how-prepare-three-bird-roast

We had it one year at my DB's for Christmas.

My DB and his DP thought it was amazing. The rest of us were polite.

It was OK but nothing special. A bit dry. May have been the cooking...

HintofVintagePink · 13/12/2022 23:59

I’m not sure I can even name 12 birds

Tinselpipes · 14/12/2022 00:00

The thought of these multiple bird roasts has always made me feel quite sick and I'm a meat eater

RosesAndHellebores · 14/12/2022 00:00

Over-rated in my opinion. All the birds tend to need different.accompaniments to be their best.

Summerfun54321 · 14/12/2022 00:03

The strange pate Swiss roll interpretation sounds way worse.

Well, here in the States there was a fad for the "turducken," a turkey stuffed with a duck, stuffed with a chicken. It never appealed to me. I'd think that the turkey would be vastly overcooked before the chicken was even safe to eat, and how in all the hells would you manage carving them all? Wouldn't one destroy the whole mess trying to drag the chicken out of the duck, and the duck out of the turkey? I'm HOPING that nothing like this is the case!

Banjoman · 14/12/2022 00:11

Wood stock!

one more!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 14/12/2022 00:12

My reaction as a not in the slightest bit vegetarian is 'yuk' on the grounds of wanting to be able to taste the chicken or the turkey or the duck. But then again, I also think the same when DP puts two random GF pasta shapes into a meal, neither of which out of the extensive and very expensive supplies I have to buy in bulk have been chosen to go with the sauce/meat/seafood in question.

Honestly, what kind of monster makes a tuna pasta salad for packed lunch with half a bag of annelini and half a bag of fusilli?

Lots of them in a row 😂

HintofVintagePink · 14/12/2022 00:16

They need to be in size order I suppose, or no one will take us seriously

You don't pull them apart! As explained many times they are deboned and rolled together. So to seve, you simply carve vertical slices so each slice has a piece of each bird.
