I can’t remember and need to make this year, what are the basics please?

OP posts:
Oysterbabe · 13/12/2022 21:01

Mash does not belong with a roast dinner and definitely not Christmas dinner. Roast potatoes are enough.

Vicliz24 · 13/12/2022 21:01

Turkey
Roast potatoes
Sage onion and shallot stuffing
Savoy Cabbage
Carrots
Kidney Beans
Pigs in Blankets
Roasted shallots
Yorkies
Gallons of Bread Sauce
Cranberry Sauce
Gravy

UrsulaPandress · 13/12/2022 21:01

Mash most certainly does belong with a Christmas dinner.

Gavel.

Catlover77 · 13/12/2022 21:02

Thatsshallot1967 · 13/12/2022 20:20

And cauliflower cheese?!! Never heard of that in a Christmas lunch.

Agree. Where has this monstrosity come from 😃

BorisJohnsonsHair · 13/12/2022 21:03

Cauliflower cheese has no place on a Christmas dinner!

Roast meat
Pigs in blankets
Bread sauce
Carrots
Brussels sprouts
Roast parsnips
Roast potatoes
Stuffing
Gravy

KVlovesWinter · 13/12/2022 21:04

In our house
Turkey and gammon (or sometimes a rib of beef, or that memorable year we had a goose...)
Roast potatoes
Roast parsnips with honey
Mashed carrot and swede
Sprouts
Cauliflower cheese
Pigs in blankets
Stuffing
Gravy
Cranberry sauce (and mint sauce which I know isn't traditional but I love it)
Will probably do Yorkshire puddings this year because DS is a strange one who doesn't like roast potatoes!!

No starter because honestly why on earth would you want one

Pudding much later on, this year ginger and pear pudding with cream or custard, or mince pies. Only my dad likes Christmas pudding and he's not bothered so no point doing one.

RewildingAmbridge · 13/12/2022 21:07

Oh and the spiced red cabbage with apple DM insists on that usually gets left in the kitchen!

OrangePomander · 13/12/2022 21:09

No one has mentioned the wine!

Also, Yorkshire Puddings are compulsory, and any spares are to be fought over. Mashed potato has no place in Christmas dinner.

Turkey
ham

gravy

Croquettes? Ham? Are you on drugs?

Igglepiggleslittletoe · 13/12/2022 21:12

@dropthevipers I think @petitdonkey is Irish. We have often over the years had a croquette chucked on our Christmas dinner plate too :)

Always always turkey AND ham. Not one or other. Both. ALWAYS.

Parker231 · 13/12/2022 21:13

It’s whatever meal you want but eaten on Christmas Day

Every day's a school day.

EarringsandLipstick · 13/12/2022 21:15

Chiming in re Irish menu - always turkey + ham!

No croquettes in my house but growing up in the 80s, croquettes were ubiquitous at pretty much every meal in many households. One of the first things we learned to make in Home Economics!

Igglepiggleslittletoe · 13/12/2022 21:15

We have had memorable years where my father decided he was some cordon bleu chef and cooked pheasant, rabbit or goose but we always went back to turkey and ham. Thankfully.

You were quite posh. My ma took them out of the freezer, fried them in the deep fat fryer and served them up. They revolt me to this day. I dont think my kids have ever seen one in fact much is my dislike for them.

Im a Dub (just fyi) and never tried bread sauce in my life. How is it made?

You are incorrect.

Igglepiggleslittletoe · 13/12/2022 21:20

Mashed potato to me screams next day dinner when you can make a hash from the leftovers.

RandomSunday · 13/12/2022 21:22

Haha! 😂 I’m sure you’ll have realised by now that Christmas dinner means different things to different people 🫣 In short Christmas dinner is a Sunday Roast - with extras. What the extras are depends on what you want, and are prepared to cook. Christmas dinner usually includes pigs in blankets, if you like them. I hate them so they are not included in my Christmas dinner.

Just include what you want. There is no right or wrong way. Have a brilliant Christmas 🎅🏻

Turkey
Roast potatoes
Peas
Carrots
Green beans
Stuffing
Pigs in blankets
Yorkshire puddings
Gravy

CheesesandWines · 13/12/2022 21:26

The basics :
Turkey or Braised Mushroom
Roast potatoes
Roast parsnips
Roast onions
Beetroot
Sausage stuffing
Sage and shalott stuffing
Carrotts (boiled)
Pigs in blankets or figs in blankets
Gravy or Port sauce
Cranberry sauce

Christmas pudding
Brandy butter
Bonbonbonbons

Extras :
Broccoli
Leeks in cheese
Quiches Lorraine
Fennel sauce
Sprouts with bacon

I would go for the basics as you are inexperienced and add in one or two extras for a special treat. Or ask a guest to bring an extra ?

I think it's just a case of doing whatever you fancy.

Mine will be roast turkey, stuffing, pigs in blankets, roast potatoes, honey roasted parsnips/carrots, braised red cabbage, shredded sprouts with bacon and creamed leeks. Plus gravy and cranberry sauce.

Please tell me more about these shredded sprouts and bacon! That sounds all kinds of yummy!

I'm having chicken and gammon (DH dislikes turkey). As well as: pigs in blankets, stuffing, roast potatoes and parsnips, broccoli cheese (like cauliflower cheese, but imo tastier), and an assortment of veggies. Gravy and cranberry sauce will be available.

I can't get behind Yorkshire pudding unless it's with beef, lamb, or sausages. Sorry

Honeyroar · 13/12/2022 21:27

Im veggie and I wouldn’t want a cauliflower cheese on Xmas dinner!

id say -

starter -
we often don’t bother, but if not soup or prawn cocktail

Main -
turkey (and a nut roast for veggies)
roast pots
some boiled pots and butter for the older family members that find roasties too hard.
roast parsnips
pigs in blankets
pork stuffing
(+ veggie stuffing)
carrots (sometimes carrots and swede mash instead)
sprouts
peas
one more veg - usually cabbage or cauliflower
Gravy - usually Bisto as it’s veggie
cranberry sauce. We have apple sauce too in our family.

Desert-
christmas pud or trifle

We generally have cheese/snacks/mince pies later on.

Make it easier - buy pugs in blankets, stuffing balls, pre peeled veg etc. It really doesn’t have to be a big fussy meal, however you do it it’s a tasty meal.
