What is the actual point of them anymore? I sent a small parcel 1st class 2 weeks ago and it's still not arrived...

They are intermittently on strike. I support their strike just like I support nurses, paramedics, teachers. Wake up!

Unfortunately they haven't helped nurses as due to the strikes a very large percentage of nurses didn't receive their ballot papers on time to be able to vote.

You can't build your life on the expectation that your work hours will always stay the same as they are. When the needs and expectations of customers change, a responsible business changes how they run the business to adapt. Because if they don't, they'll be out of business as competitors will step in to do what you don't. Obviously that wasn't an issue for RM until fairly recently as they had a monopoly on postal deliveries. But that is not the case anymore.

Don’t be so ridiculous! You can’t just decide that hours change, Sunday working, that impacts childcare, family life etc!

well done the posties, keep going!

Giving my local postie a massive tip this year to make up for all the strike days

Of course you can. It's ridiculous to state otherwise. You can't take a job and expect nothing to change, 10, 20, 30 or 40 years later. What business could possibly run like that and stay successful?

You don’t take a job to have it change a year later!

So you’d agree 9-5 and then if it was changed to 11-7, say ok that’s fine….. you’d be a mug!

If not one year than how many years? Do you think it reasonable that someone can start a job at 18 that is certain hours, and those hours to be fixed in stone for the next 50 years, regardless of how the world changes in that time?

I’ll ask again, would you accept your work hours changing?

it meaning childcare was difficult, if not impossible?

What job do you do, did you agree certain hours, certain days then have them changed, whilst also cutting your salary and your benefits?

Banjoman · 13/12/2022 22:40

@Florenz by the way DH had applied for VR, so he’s not even striking for himself, he’s striking for those left behind and the fact they’re being tested appallingly. The fact that RM want to be another vile gig economy and the fact that people don’t care as long as everything is cheap.

Thank his for people like my DH who thing the working person deserves respect and loyalty from a company they work for.

Not to be treated like a second class citizen.

I've never had a job where I didn't have to accept reasonable adjustment to working hours. I honestly don't understand how a business can run effectively otherwise. You can't say to customers "I know you want deliveries at times to suit you, but unfortunately our employees refuse to work at those times". Because those customers will just go elsewhere.

antipodeancanary · 13/12/2022 22:51

Absolutely. My bro has worked for Royal mail for over ten years and still hasn't got a regular line. For about 8 years he was simply covering sick leave so didn't know from one day to the next where or when he would be working, or originally if at all, as he had a pretty much zero hours contract. Now he has finally been 'promoted' to covering long term sick and has a normal (ish) contract and might be covering the same walk for several months at regular times. Obviously there is lots of sick leave as it is a rare person who can carry a mail bag at speed over many years, walking over 10 k a day, aged often mid 60s. Lots of them who can't see properly in the dark, have arthritis in the hands, or who have fallen or been assaulted. Back injuries galore.
Managers want zero hours contracts for all though they would be ashamed to admit it. And the union wont let them get their way. Which is fab. And no. We cant have Sunday deliveries without paying staff properly for the inconvenience.

Banjoman · 13/12/2022 22:53

What’s a reasonable adjustment in your hours?

OhIdoLike2bBesideTheSeaside · 13/12/2022 22:56

I sent any parcels I had via DHL they all got there

The adjustment suggested are not reasonable.
Customers wont go anywhere else because no other companies want to provide the service. Other companies will only deliver profitable parcels to the mainland. They want nothing to do with letters or tricky destinations. Sod you in the highlands and islands!
Its not like other companies are begging for these roles, they are not. They wont touch anything other than the profitable parts of Royal Mail. Why would they? In order to make a profit they would have to charge loads more. Why are Evri not delivering letters do you think?

What’s a reasonable adjustment in your hours?

Hours of work changing by upto 2 hours each way. Working extra hours in busy times and building up TOIL to be used at quieter times of year.

Because there's no demand for letters anymore. Nor is there very much demand for parcel delivery to the highlands or islands.

What job do you do that had such unreasonable demands, when you took the job was it a permanent position with permanent hours? His did you feel when that changed?

It was always the same from when I started there about 8 years ago. I've never had a job where the hours were set in stone forever. I didn't even know such a job existed anymore, I don't see how they can. It's backward thinking out of the 70s.

So nothing like RM! Who have very very definite hours set in stone…. So they can work out their work/life balance.

how did you deal with childcare and the changing of hours?

because unlike the 1970s, in most households both parents work

his did you deal with that?

I rearranged my childcare.

Do you think employees "work/life balance" outweigh the needs of the business?

No business can run effectively with employees whose hours and duties are set in stone from the day they start working there until the day they retire. That's just insane. The world changes and businesses change accordingly to adapt or they die.

How did you get childcare on a Sunday? That’s impossible?

Because RM want Sunday working as compulsory!

How is that dealt with?

Well if RM dies, the only saving grace is so does Simon Thompson!

Also what’s your view on them now reneging on the USO?
