Drive thru Mcds on Christmas Day

It would be bad to do this…wouldn’t it..?

We live abroad and aren’t back to the U.K. to family this year, quite happy to be at home (Dh, Dd, 4 and dog)
Not really fussed about Christmas dinner, we don’t love it that much.
How bad would it be to get a drive through McDonald’s and eat it at the beach? 🙈We’d still have lovely buffet type favourite foods for Xmas Eve, plus a nice breakfast and all our favourite chocs & cheese & biscuits…we just wouldn’t have the main meal 😬I feel like if we did, we’d have to keep it secret and not tell our families, who would be outraged 🤣

I'm in Asia and McDs will be open as usual through Christmas.

Beef with mustard, potatoes, tomato salad and a creamy dessert. Respectable Christmas lunch there.

wotsinthebox · 11/12/2022 06:36

If that is what your Christmas dream is then do it. YOLO

I mean just if they asked..my mum will probably ask if I’m doing Turkey or beef etc..it just feels so wrong, like you can’t not have a Christmas dinner 😬

Just tell her you're 'doing beef' and crack on with a shitload of cheeseburgers

HelloBunny · 11/12/2022 07:05

Once had burger & chips, and pints on Christmas Day. We were away & couldn’t believe the pub was open! We’d had a turkey dinner & pudding in the hotel restaurant on Christmas Eve.

BarbaraofSeville · 11/12/2022 07:07

OP just do what you want to do. Sod what anyone else thinks. Nothing about Christmas is compulsory, do it your way.

We often cook a basic version of Christmas Dinner on Christmas eve and go hiking with leftover turkey sandwiches and Christmas cake on Christmas day itself.

The weather isn't always awful and not so long ago, I'm sure it was pre pandemic so probably 2019, I remember going to the North Yorkshire coast on something like 29th December and the weather was quite nice and it was heaving. Everyone had the same idea.

Anyway, KFC is a very popular Christmas day meal in Japan. So many people want to do it, you have to book.

So if mcds is open where you are, and you're happy with whatever the beach weather is, crack on and enjoy.

FrodisCapering · 11/12/2022 07:08

I hate the traditional Christmas dinner, my husband isn't fussed and my kids will just want to play with their toys. We'll be having sandwiches and picky bits.
You should do exactly what makes you happy!

vera99 · 11/12/2022 07:12

Classy .....

Beseen22 · 11/12/2022 07:17

We've had a Chinese takeaway on Christmas day a couple of years and they were very low pressure years that I loved. We don't even like turkey so the whole Christmas Dinner isn't really for us and thr rest of it is really just a roast which we do once a week anyway

Ilovehamandtoast · 11/12/2022 07:22

Do whatever makes you happy.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 11/12/2022 07:24

If it’s a country where Christmas is celebrated, I would feel bad about the staff working. At least in a restaurant prices are inflated and the staff can expect better rates of pay/tips. I suppose you could tip the drive through staff; maybe that would make them more likely to accept the Christmas shift next year so that healthcare workers can get a coffee on their way to/from work.

Lovetotravel123 · 11/12/2022 07:48

We had pizza for our Christmas dinner the other year. It was great!

LynetteScavo · 11/12/2022 08:07

It's so bad God will strike you with a bolt of lightening as you stuff the burger in your face.

Don't you know everybody should spend Christmas in a ski chalet, carving turkey while looking lovingly at the many family and friends who have joined them?

Or you could just do you and eat what you like where you like.

Withnoshoes · 11/12/2022 08:10

We didn’t have a Christmas dinner last year we did a buffet . It was lovely and much less hassle, I’m in the U.K. . We are having a Christmas dinner this year though.

Do what you want and makes your day the best it can be!

What an odd thing to say. Why would you feel bad? Even in countries that as a whole celebrate Christmas, there are millions of people who don't who are perfectly happy to work! Either because they aren't Christian or maybe they just have a personal reason to rather be working. I used to live in a Muslim country and was happy to work Eid because it wasn't special to me.

rainbowstardrops · 11/12/2022 08:11

I didn't realise McDonald's might be open on Christmas Day! Off to Google

Honestly, McDonald's on the beach sounds great!

RopeyOldBird · 11/12/2022 08:16

We had sausages, baked beans and chips one year because it was my kids' favourite meal and they really wanted it for Christmas Dinner.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 11/12/2022 08:20

I can say they weren’t open on Christmas Day or Boxing Day near me in the UK last year; but I think there was also a Jewish holiday at the same time and that may have contributed. I was stuck in hospital with my newborn; they forgot to feed me; and a friend drove around for ages trying to find me food but they were all closed. The website had suggested they wouldn’t be!

That isn’t massively relevant if you’re not here but learn from my mistakes and double check they are actually open rather than relying on Google/their websites.

And if that’s what you want to do, ignore what your mum will think! It’s not her charismas dinner.

Brandymakesmerandy · 11/12/2022 08:24

Believe me I would if it was open. Asd son would be so happy 🤣

NotDecemberYet · 11/12/2022 08:26

We are having lasagne . There are only 3 of us and I asked Ds to choose his favourite meal .

CourtneeLuv · 11/12/2022 08:28

We are in Europe and may have cocktails on the beach. I'm planning on a couple of pornstar martini's.

We have tended to space the big Xmas Dinner out over a few days as its too much to eat in the heat and I considered going out for an indian (what a lot of people here do) but I wouldn't go so far as to have mcds for Xmas Dinner.

But if you want to, do!

PuddyR79 · 11/12/2022 09:16

I say do whatever makes you happiest on the day and eat whatever you like, it's Christmas after all.

Make it one of those Christmases that in future years you say " Remember when we had a picnic on the beach/top of a mountain/whatever".

As a mother and wife you're old enough not to care what your parents think of your choices so do what you like. If they're outraged just shrug, tell them it's what makes you happy and then move the conversation on to other things, it's not a big deal.

Hope you have a lovely Christmas! 🎄

Also hope you come back to this thread after Christmas and update us on how the day went and what you decided to do!

Glenthebattleostrich · 11/12/2022 09:20

We are going for an Indian meal this year. My parents (who live 200 miles away and spend the day with my siblings, leaving the 3 of us on our own despite being invited every year) reaction was akin to me announcing I've decided to take up murdering puppies as a hobby. I'm actually enjoying their outrage, 🤣

We live don main land Europe for several years. And I can assure everyone this is a low end as it would be in the uk, having a maccy d’s for crimbo dinner. No one would think as it’s not uk it’s in some way less low end.

but if it makes you all happy, crack on.

Hilarious that someone posts about having McDonalds for Christmas Day lunch being seen as 'low end' but uses maccy d's and Crimbo in their post. Saying massy d's and Crimbo makes me shudder.

@Rememberwheneveryoneusedtosaywhatsuppp You can have whatever you want. No such thing as the 'Christmas Day food Police'.

billyt · 11/12/2022 09:28

See, can't even write maccy d's properly twice Grin

LlynTegid · 11/12/2022 09:31

It is bad on any day. Why not make something and take it to the beach instead?
