Drive thru Mcds on Christmas Day

It would be bad to do this…wouldn’t it..?

We live abroad and aren’t back to the U.K. to family this year, quite happy to be at home (Dh, Dd, 4 and dog)
Not really fussed about Christmas dinner, we don’t love it that much.
How bad would it be to get a drive through McDonald’s and eat it at the beach? 🙈We’d still have lovely buffet type favourite foods for Xmas Eve, plus a nice breakfast and all our favourite chocs & cheese & biscuits…we just wouldn’t have the main meal 😬I feel like if we did, we’d have to keep it secret and not tell our families, who would be outraged 🤣

Most McDonald's are closed (according to their website, restaurants in most countries are closed but franchisees may open if they wish.) They refer you to national websites.

We found more things open in the USA than the U.K. but when I was in other European countries at Christmas everything was closed from about 2pm Christmas Eve until 26/27th depending on country. Ethnic restaurants are the ones that tend to open

ColonelRhubarbBikini · 10/12/2022 22:47

Go for your life. Why wouldn’t you?! As long as you’ve not invited folks and promised a feast that would give Henry VIII heartburn then do what you fancy.

In Japan it’s very common to have KFC on Christmas Day. Sprang from an advertising campaign years ago.

I mean just if they asked..my mum will probably ask if I’m doing Turkey or beef etc..it just feels so wrong, like you can’t not have a Christmas dinner 😬

You can absolutely do this and should feel no shame. But if you do have some shame telling your parents the you are having a “picnic on the beach”. I should think that covers it!

IloveJudgeJudy · 10/12/2022 22:48

Some are open on Christmas Day. You'd have to check first. The one near us in Kent normally is and one in/near Coventry was a few years ago.

How sad that some McDonalds make their employees work on Christmas day.
Bloody money grabbers

Bugger all to do with anyone else what you do.
You fill your boots.

Its your Christmas dinner- not mine.

This with bells on

This is such an entitled viewpoint.

I like that the Maccas in my area are always open over Christmas. Not just because it means healthcare workers like me who work every Christmas can get a coffee on our way in to keep your loved ones alive (especially for the Christmas night shift I’m on again this year), but also because you have no idea how many lonely people gravitate to somewhere like McDonald’s. So so many people who have nowhere to go, are homeless, are experiencing a crisis, or who are struggling in some other way can find somewhere open where it’s ok to spend a small amount and there’s a bit of company. It’s a lifesaver for the many many people you’ve clearly never considered who aren’t surrounded by friends, family and presents at Christmas.

Most will be shut on Christmas Day unless at services or similar so you may want to check.

How can you say that when you don't even know what country OP is in? Hmm

You are aware that not everyone celebrates Christmas? A couple of people at work used to love offering to be on call on Christmas Day - they don’t celebrate and it’s good money!

So tell her you are 'doing beef'.

Beefburgers, that is.

What about those staff who don't celebrate Christmas? Why shouldn't they get the opportunity to get some decent overtime in?
As PP says, plenty of people work Christmas Day, HCPs, carers, security, emergency services, agriculture, services like the AA, animal care etc etc etc and might really need to be able to get food that they don't have to cook.
The world doesn't stop because it's Christmas.

ReginaGeorgeIsAFuglySlut · 11/12/2022 01:27

If you are in Australia, which I thought was possible because of the beach, lots of our Maccas are open on Christmas day. My son is 15 and volueered to work the morning shift because the money is good. As long as you are nice and have a smile for young people working, then do what makes you happy.

Ivyonafence · 11/12/2022 01:55

Sounds like you're in australia. Do what you want. It's not like everyone has a big roast in 30+ degree whether.

I'm sure if you take your chips to the beach you'll be amazed at how many other families are there doing the exact same thing.

Cakeandcoffee93 · 11/12/2022 02:00

I was in Prague xmas day once and had kfc- will always remember it! Was delicious and heaving in there full of youths. Thought it was cool as hell

Whatisthegoss · 11/12/2022 02:00

Sounds like a perfect option to avoiding a lot of fuss.
Ask your local Maccas if it will be open.
Everyone has an opinion why do we all care?!
Christmas = consumerism & glutany anyway.

Sparkletastic · 11/12/2022 02:36

Sounds great if that's what you want to do. Just tell your mum you are having lunch out. No further details required Smile

cantley · 11/12/2022 02:50

Christmas should be whatever you want it to be.
A few years ago a friend ( single, 50s, big extended family) went camping at a beach ( we're in Oz) for a couple of days with a platonic male friend.
On Christmas Day they cooked sausages over a fire and had them in slices of bread with tomato sauce. They went for a long walk, read their books, napped.
She said it's one of her favourite Christmas days.

Ozmumofboys3 · 11/12/2022 04:10

Definitely not unreasonable! We live in QLD, Australia and Christmas is waaaay too hot to be faffing around doing a Xmas dinner. We've done a range of things, kebabs or fish and chips at the beach. Sometimes we do a buffet of party type foods, sometimes we bbq.

This year we have friends staying for Xmas. Plan for Xmas day is bbq. Stuff what other people think!

McDonald's on the beach sounds lovely!

nalabae · 11/12/2022 04:41

I’ve had McDonald’s on Xmas eve. Don’t think they are open Xmas day

I keep saying to everyone let’s have a bbq on Xmas nobody wants to. It’s the best thing ever

BritWifeInUSA · 11/12/2022 05:11

Why would your parents be outraged? I’m sure you’ve done “worse” things in your life than eat fast food on Christmas Day. Do you regularly discuss your eating habits with them? Do you need their permission to go to a fast food place?

FWIW a few years ago we had Wendy’s on Christmas Day due to a power outage where we were staying.

sashh · 11/12/2022 05:14

Sounds like a fab idea to me.

There are beaches in other countries. I live by the beach, so close to it I can hear the waves inside the house. But it’s not Australia.

Tell her you’re having chicken ( nuggets) or beef ( burgers). Nothing wrong with doing something that suits your family and a day at the beach sounds amazing.

I am aware of that BritWife, I assumed Australia because it is summer in Australia at Christmas, so a lot of us spend it at the beach. I also know there are a lot of Aussie and Brit expats on mumsnet. Obviously I didn't mean we are the only country with a beach...
