to think Elon Musk is shining direct sunlight on a very grubby state of affairs?

Just staggered at what's coming out tbh. When he first bought Twitter there were several lengthy threads on here lamenting that Twitter would soon move to the Right and be full of hate. Now it appears that no one was bothering to work on child protection, child sexual abuse and exploitation routinely unaddressed, and Twitter employees were working directly with the FBI and government to censor stories some which arguably had direct impacts on how people would vote. Are there any threads on here discussing what's coming out like there were screening about how horrific it was all going to be, because I can't see any?

OP posts:

I'm pretty new to Mumsnet, can you actively put someone on ignore or do you just have to get used to scrolling quickly past?

happylove890 · 13/12/2022 08:29

Elon, when compared with the left wing extremists who used to run Twitter, is a far better option. Not perfect, but Elon himself would freely admit that.

@Believeitornot Please read the tweet flood by Bari Weiss I'm copying below. You'll see that twitter administration didn't have anything solid to ban Trump but they made the false claim that he was inciting violence as you seem to believe as well since it was repeated over and over. Also, within the same tweet flood you'll see this:

"20. In June 2018, Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei tweeted, “#Israel is a malignant cancerous tumor in the West Asian region that has to be removed and eradicated: it is possible and it will happen.”
Twitter neither deleted the tweet nor banned the Ayatollah."

If twitter is so sensible to inciting violence how Khamenei is still on twitter when he is openly calling for violence against Israel?

Here is the link to tweet flood by Bari Weiss, it includes internal communication within Twitter on banning Trump:

@JackTorrance

There are a number of ‘stories’ circulating around about the attack on Nancy Pelosi’s husband. They have been debunked as fake news/conspiracy theorists - which Musk himself perpetuated.

It's appalling that he wasn't banned but Trump was not banned for inciting violence. He was banned because Twitter were terrified that those loons might do something madder than they had done and they would be blamed, probably in some sort of Congress hearing or Court Room. They likely had nervous advertisers too.

The idea that Twitter was left wing and is now right wing is stupid. Twitter was trying to maximise profit by appealing to liberals. Now they are trying to maximise profit by appealing to conservatives and libertarians. Politics is a tool for them, not something they actually care about.

PatientZorro · 13/12/2022 08:51

I agree with you OP. The sunlight that is being shone on previous dubious practices is fascinating.

I too am baffled by posters accusing you of claiming special expertise or being a Musk cheerleader when you’ve done nothing of the sort, just opened a discussion. Weird.

You’re claiming that Twitter is run by democrats which is nonsense. One Twitter thread proves nothing. Plenty of other Twitter shit written by republicans.

To claim Twitter is biased is just nonsense.

I kind of agree with this. They just want the clicks/eyeballs and will do whatever is necessary to maintain advertising revenue.

If anyone remembers the history of Facebook will do well to see how it applies here. When Facebook was first set up, the conversation moved quickly to “how can we make money from this”. They make money from people engaging with it - and that happens when there’s more shocking/emotive content.

I think comparing Jeremy Corbyn to Hitler doesn't help your credibility.

Sorry you don't understand analogies

One thing that the last few years have taught me is that i don't need to prove myself or beg for 'credibility' or acceptance from people who hate me and my family for who we are.

I wish I'd understood that when my grandparents talked to me when I was younger

The responses on here from posters in reply to me describing my personal experiences of terrifying racism as a result of this political movement would have shocked me beyond belief 10 years ago. Mockery, ignoring, taunting.

Now sadly, while it still makes me feel fucking shit and devastated, it's no longer a surprise.

Thank you for making it absolutely crystal clear that you could not give less of a shit about antisemitism. I've met a lot of people like you in the past 10 years. Luckily I've met lots who do care.

It's still scary as fuck, though, to realise how many would have either just turned away or actively applauded if the 'corbyn project' had actually succeeded.

So I've posted maybe 2000 words (??) sharing my and my family's and community's experiences of antisemitism, and pointing out the either lack of interest or active support of that from some posters , and literally the only bit you thought worthy of responding to was an analogy that you could then misrepresent to try to invalidate everything I've said?

And you're happy with that as a way to respond?

Ok.

"Platforms like Twitter need external and legal oversight from outside bodies"

Like the Chinese government oversees Weibo? The problem I have with this idea is that we only need to go back as far as what happened post 9/11 and see that all the laws introduced for good reason, immediately got abused by the people who had the authority to wield the new powers. Give a local council the legal ability to surveil locals within their ward, ostensibly to monitor for terrorist activity, and before you know it they are spying on people suspected of sending their kids to schools in the wrong ward, or people letting their dogs shit on the pavements.

www.theguardian.com/world/2016/dec/25/british-councils-used-investigatory-powers-ripa-to-secretly-spy-on-public

The idea any government appointed agency would act in an impartial way if given the power to regulate and oversee social media is naivety on an industrial scale.

What a silly example to pick.

We have regulation controlling what’s on our tv and radios, means we don’t have porn on BBC1 at 10am for example, so why not a bit of internet regulation?

What is the Corbyn project? I feel like I am missing something here.

As a country we voted for Boris Johnson, a man who made what many perceived to be homphobic, islamaphbic and racist comments.

I say "many perceived" because I agree with some interpretations of his bigotry but not others. The point is politicians using racism and hatred is, sadly not new. The way you are speaking implies there is something more sinister behind Corbyns anti-semitism. Is that the case? Or is the emotive language because his brand of bigotry effected you were as other politicians was targetted at other groups?

"We have regulation controlling what’s on our tv and radios, means we don’t have porn on BBC1 at 10am for example, so why not a bit of internet regulation?"

We do have internet regulation regarding porn. We're not talking about porn though, this is about the expression of political views. How is that regulated on TV and in print? Last. I checked Farage was having a grand old time demonising and monstering all sorts of minority groups, getting platformed all over the shop, BBC, ITV, Sky News, GB News. Do you think he should be banned from the airwaves?

The problem with Twitter is more than political views.

It is about allowing the spread of dangerous lies which result in people being attacked in the real world.

Dotellhimpike · 13/12/2022 09:12

Jeremy Corbyn is one of the nicest, kindest, most decent, anti racist, anti bigotry politcians this country has ever produced. To label him a bigot is ridiculous.

As for Farage? He should not have been given the unfettered airtime that he was without proper interrogation and fact checking alongside his bullshit. The latter was woefully missing. For a person who was not even an MP, he was given more airtime than elected political parties on shows such as question time, for example!

Dotellhimpike · 13/12/2022 09:15

Again I come back to, what is being said on Twitter that isn't being said in the mainstream media? Why this insistence Twitter has some sort of malign ability to influence people's actions in a way no other media has?

This is in my opinion disingenuous nonsense, people just don't like Elon Musk and are trying to rationalise it.

The EHRC, the Labour Party and all the Jewish community organisations and newspapers are just lying then.

I suppose we can take it for granted you believe the last one.

I posted a huge list of actual actions and words of his upthread that demonstrate who he is quite clearly , but don't let facts or evidence get in the way of random assertion based on the fact that you think he's 'nice and kind' . Fucksake

Agree. Elon Musk is a complete cunt. You don't need to pretend that Twitter was a bastion of moral decency prior to his take over nor that it has some sort of global influence to make that case.

PatientZorro · 13/12/2022 09:20

Ok, we’re all entitled to our opinions. FWIW I could not disagree more. The man is a proven anti semite and not fit for any office.
