To be utterly sick and tired of football protesters?

Is anybody else sick and tired of people protesting during the World Cup and feel like it's ruining it? I think we are all aware now of where this world cup is and the atrocities that helped build the stadium - but we don't need reminding every 5 minutes IMO. I feel like people can make their own mind up whether to watch or not, and not have people protesting and ruining the games for everyone else.

Okay well clearly I am in the minority on this.

Well, I guess they are saying it's not OK to enjoy it when it is built off the back of people's lives and human rights, so I'm sure they won't be upset to be spoiling your enjoyment.

If you want to be pissed off at someone, be pissed of at FIFA for choosing this location and condoning the abuse. They don't give a shit about human rights, but if enough fans get pissed off with them there is a (very small) chance they might think twice next time.

HedwigForever · 09/12/2022 21:33

It's only a game 😉

(A very costly one that I am sick of the sight of)

loislovesstewie · 09/12/2022 21:33

We haven't watched any of it because of the appalling human rights record and the shocking way migrant workers have been treated in Qatar. I think that it's dreadful that the competition is being held there. I'm sure that I'll now get comments about other countries and I agree that other countries have appalling records too but that is not an excuse for Qatar to escape criticism. But carry on enjoying the match.

I think you need to get off your high horse tbh. You typed that response either on a laptop or a tablet or a mobile phone. All from parts which were put together by children in third world countries and sold for profit.

Yes, but it's not just about you though, is it, with all due respect??

There are millions and millions of people watching the world cup. We all have the news in front of us and know what's happened in the build up and during the world cup, but we don't need constant protests of stuff by people attention-seeking and ruining the events for everyone.

Yeah, and it’s not all about you either.

it’s about the millions of people around the world living in absolute poverty, having to put their lives on the line to earn a pittance to stop their children starving to death, and being taken advantage of in the process because employers like the stadium builders see them as expendable tools

but yeah, you enjoy your football match and have a little whinge when you have to wait a minute for the protesters to be cleared off the pitch

i bet the families of all those dead construction workers are terribly embarrassed for the inconvenience it’s causing you

Iknowhim · 09/12/2022 21:35

VladmirsPoutine · 09/12/2022 20:51

I'm with you. It's almost like these protesters don't understand that as long as I'm not affected by anything remotely interesting like human rights I don't deserve to have my enjoyment of football ruined! It's so annoying. I wish we'd employ more of that spirit here in the UK. Protesting at cost of living is frankly tedious! I just spent the best part of £500 for steak and couldn't give a toss that nurse has to go to a foodbank after a 12 hour shift.

😂😂

Redbushteaforme · 09/12/2022 21:37

You know all about the worker deaths and human rights abuses and so on, yet you're still watching it, so that can't really have sunk in can it? Surely not.
So I'd assume the protesters are trying to get through to those like you, who know but apparently still don't care.

This.

Brefugee · 09/12/2022 21:37

People protesting because of the football matches in Qatar. Someone had just protested during the Argentina game.

i'm sick and tired of those who run the sport i love bowing to corruption and awarding the world cup to a place with serious issues around human rights abuses. So you'll just have to suck it up

Iknowhim · 09/12/2022 21:38

Keyansier · 09/12/2022 21:05

I just don't think protesters should have ruined the world cup for the audience watching, that's all

You're spectacularly stupid and very clearly don't understand protest.

You also don't give a shit about human rights.

Just shut up and watch your sad little World Cup and don't worry about all those people who died building the stadiums.
All the women who are oppressed.
All the gay people who face untold cruelty if they're discovered.

But hey, none of that is more important than your enjoyment is it.

Oh yes of course! If anyone owns a mobile phone that's it... we might as well just embrace human rights abuses whenever they occur. The more the better, bring it on!

Iknowhim · 09/12/2022 21:40

I actually think we need more reminders of the lived reality of the abused and oppressed.
I think we should have memorials for all the dead.
Photos of them on the screens.
I think it should be in right up in the faces of everyone supporting this hateful tournament.

loislovesstewie · 09/12/2022 21:40

Why the need to comment in the way you did to me? There are others saying exactly the same.

Except I didn't say anything remotely like that Hmm

I don't have a laptop or a tablet, I have a desktop computer. The only phone I have belonged to my late husband, I'm keeping it until it stops functioning then I won't bother with another one. Is that OK for you?

SnarkyBag · 09/12/2022 21:43

Was going to post an opinion and then realised who the OP was.

Mummadeze · 09/12/2022 21:44

I couldn’t agree any less with you. There isn’t enough protesting to highlight the inhumanity and atrocities that are prevalent in that country. The persecution of LGBT people is disgusting, inequality for women, prejudicial laws, in addition to the terrible ways the workers were treated. These are serious issues and people need to seize the moment to continue to highlight them.

Iknowhim · 09/12/2022 21:44

@Keyansier yes you did, you said that clearly when you started a thread moaning about people protesting against the World Cup.

Because if you actually cared about human rights and freedom then you wouldn't object to the protests, you would support them.

You don't care because you are watching.
I don't agree that there's a position you can take in a middle ground here.

Brefugee · 09/12/2022 21:44

jeez that is such a pointless and lazy reply. You may know that a lot of people are using tech for longer and buying used rather than new? that we can't stop the relentless march of industry and the destruction of the planet, and that we can't all fight it on all fronts at the same time?

Right now, we are protesting about the world cup in Qatar. Some by boycotting the games. Some by actually disrupting the games. And when it's over? well some will continue to keep countries/firms with appalling human rights records in the public eye. Everything we do damages the planet. The trick here is to get as many of us as possible to do as much as we can to minimise it as often as we can.

You probably spent more time posting on this thread, OP, than the disruption to your precious match.

Readaboutyourself · 09/12/2022 21:46

Good on them. The whole thing is shameful & reminding FIFA throughout is fine in my book.

SavingKitten · 09/12/2022 21:46

Keyansier · 09/12/2022 21:42

Except I didn't say anything remotely like that Hmm

Well you did, several times

But the thing is, people know that already. We don't need telling by protesters ruining things or people blocking stuff. It's patronising and annoying.

You also called the protestors attention seeking because you don’t want your telly watching ruined. You don’t want to see it so those people protesting for their own people who have been abused and murdered to prepare for our entertainment should stop attention seeking and go away.

Sorry but I think it's pathetic people posting online bout protesting the world cup because of human rights when they are posting from a device made by children in third world countries in factories, and stating they won't be watching on their device(s) - also made by children in third world countries in factories. So hypocrital!

OP posts:
DriftwoodOnTheShore · 09/12/2022 21:48

The more it's ruined the better.

Corruption gave the World Cup to Qatar.

I admire all who protest against this despicable country.

Life is cheap there and women less than slaves.

How anyone can enjoy rich boys kicking a ball in stadiums built on the bodies of immigrant workers is beyond me.

Bingbangbongbash · 09/12/2022 21:49

Keyansier · 09/12/2022 21:26

Surely I don't need to explain why protesters taking over events ruins it for people watching?

Course you don’t, babes.

I entirely understand what you’re saying. It’s like when you’ve been having such a perfect spa day and it’s all ruined by the homeless people curled round the floor spikes.

Completely ruins the vibe.

Brefugee · 09/12/2022 21:50

Get over yourself OP. Not one iota of your enjoyment of this shameful event has been ruined by anything approaching a "protest". A couple of minutes play has been interrupted at most.

And I literally don't care if it has ruined it for you. I simply do not give a flying fuck.

I do give a flying fuck that the game of football has been hijacked by corrupt functionaries and oligarchs. And I seriously give a fuck that all the usual preconditions to being awarded the matches, in terms of sustainability and fair trade etc, have been ripped into shreds, set on fire and the ashes stamped into the ground. I did have a huge belly laugh when Qatar renaged on their agreement to sell beer. Hollow belly laughs, for sure, but i was highly amused.
