To be utterly sick and tired of football protesters?

Is anybody else sick and tired of people protesting during the World Cup and feel like it's ruining it? I think we are all aware now of where this world cup is and the atrocities that helped build the stadium - but we don't need reminding every 5 minutes IMO. I feel like people can make their own mind up whether to watch or not, and not have people protesting and ruining the games for everyone else.

Agreed.

You've basically said I know and I don't care, but to the protesters that's not good enough, they want people to care more so they are going to keep protesting and they want to impact people's enjoyment of it because they don't think you should be supporting it.

I don't see how anyone can support that logic

If a friend or relative of yours was among the 6,500 worker casualties, and everyone was turning a blind eye, you'd understandably be outraged. But they're just random brown people, right?

tenbob · 09/12/2022 21:07

Because all the most effective protests have been one quick ‘FYI, this is the issue’ and then disappearing to let people enjoy their entertainment 🙄🙄🙄

I hope the protesters carry on and are so disruptive and irritating that it makes it absolutely clear to FIFA that it would pointless to ever award another tournament to such a morally and financially corrupt country

if that means the final is abandoned and cancelled, I would be 100% behind it

Yes, but it's not just about you though, is it, with all due respect??

There are millions and millions of people watching the world cup. We all have the news in front of us and know what's happened in the build up and during the world cup, but we don't need constant protests of stuff by people attention-seeking and ruining the events for everyone.

FettleOfKish · 09/12/2022 21:13

You know all about the worker deaths and human rights abuses and so on, yet you're still watching it, so that can't really have sunk in can it? Surely not.

So I'd assume the protesters are trying to get through to those like you, who know but apparently still don't care.

Bingbangbongbash · 09/12/2022 21:14

Keyansier · 09/12/2022 21:05

I just don't think protesters should have ruined the world cup for the audience watching, that's all

True!

I want to watch 22 men who make millions a year in tight shorts running about without intrusive thoughts about other men in annoying bonded servitude. Snorefest, amirite?

WeWereInParis · 09/12/2022 21:16

You keep saying "ruined", how can you reasonably say that the World Cup has been ruined?

(Although I must say, I wouldn't care if they actually had ruined it)

Your point seems to be ‘we know all about it and we don’t care, so they should let us continue ignoring it’

I don’t understand how you think that’s at all reasonable

Falalalalaaah · 09/12/2022 21:18

This has got to be a (bad) joke? Surely nobody is this silly!

Yabu

BIWI · 09/12/2022 21:18

Can you explain why you think it's been ruined @Keyansier?

Exactly. It doesn't seem to have ruined the current match particularly. In fact, the goals are probably a direct result of the extra time.

Galliano · 09/12/2022 21:20

Well this thread has been useful in telling me people are protesting and so restoring a bit of my faith in human nature. Any protestors are in my eyes really brave and admirable considering they risk a five year prison sentence and $25k fine for highlighting horrendous human rights abuses.

Florenz · 09/12/2022 21:22

How do the protestors manage to get into the stadium without paying for tickets?

TokyoSushi · 09/12/2022 21:23

OP! As far as I can see, the game pauses for about 20 seconds and that's it!

Keyansier · 09/12/2022 21:26

Surely I don't need to explain why protesters taking over events ruins it for people watching?

It doesn’t ruin it, it’s a minor disruption. Starting to wonder if you are even being serious.

Oblomov22 · 09/12/2022 21:28

Hasn't bothered me. Similar if naked person runs on, 2 minutes, show continues.

Stayathomenamechange · 09/12/2022 21:28

Keyansier · 09/12/2022 21:26

Surely I don't need to explain why protesters taking over events ruins it for people watching?

Well yes, you need to explain how exactly it's "ruining" things when the matches are still going ahead.

And you also need to understand that it's meant to be ruining things. That is the intention of a protest.

Lucyccfc68 · 09/12/2022 21:28

There have been about 2-3 protesters to date in the tournament. The one at the Dutch game had no impact whatsoever. The BBC didn’t show them and the referee was finishing off dealing with the players who had decided to kick lumps out of each other.

Its all a bit dramatic (pathetic) to say it’s been ruined for millions of fans.

WeWereInParis · 09/12/2022 21:29

Keyansier · 09/12/2022 21:26

Surely I don't need to explain why protesters taking over events ruins it for people watching?

They aren't taking over the event. I think "ruined" suggests that matches are being called off completely, or played behind closed doors with no spectators at all. Not a minor disruption.

Keyansier · 09/12/2022 21:26

No one ‘took over’ the event. Was over within minutes and the referee was still dishing out bollockings and yellow cards to players, so made no difference to the game.

VladmirsPoutine · 09/12/2022 20:51

I'm with you. It's almost like these protesters don't understand that as long as I'm not affected by anything remotely interesting like human rights I don't deserve to have my enjoyment of football ruined! It's so annoying. I wish we'd employ more of that spirit here in the UK. Protesting at cost of living is frankly tedious! I just spent the best part of £500 for steak and couldn't give a toss that nurse has to go to a foodbank after a 12 hour shift.

Ha ha! Exactly. Who gives a fuck about human rights and slave labour. So long as I don't have to think about it. Jeebus

BIWI · 09/12/2022 21:31

Your use of the word 'ruined' is pure hyperbole.

And also nonsense.

dolor · 09/12/2022 21:33

People need to protest MORE. It's DISGUSTING.

loislovesstewie · 09/12/2022 21:33

We haven't watched any of it because of the appalling human rights record and the shocking way migrant workers have been treated in Qatar. I think that it's dreadful that the competition is being held there. I'm sure that I'll now get comments about other countries and I agree that other countries have appalling records too but that is not an excuse for Qatar to escape criticism. But carry on enjoying the match.
