To be fucking freezing

I work full-time. I am at home trying to work and only putting the heating on for a few hours, but I am fucking freezing. It is bitter outside. So fed up of this already. Fucking Merry Christmas.

Ha! I trudged into work just to be warm 😄

I usually work from home but I couldn't face icicle toes and a bloody frozen face. So battled the traffic and drove to work just so I can stay warm for 8 hours. Mind you the heating is on full blast here and my fingertips are still cold to the touch.

Amrapaali · 08/12/2022 14:45

Gosh that blanket thingy looks hideous!! Mind you if I wear something like that I will doze off immediately. Guaranteed

antelopevalley · 08/12/2022 14:45

@Amrapaali I can't believe how cold it is today! I just want to go back to bed.

Yes indeed it is hidous!! I don't wear it out for dinner but I haven't needed any heating at all since I bought it. I also had a tough job getting it back from someone who was home from Uni - looking at you DD2

Plumbear2 · 08/12/2022 14:50

We have started putting our dressing gowns over our normal clothes. I highly recommend it.

I was in bed but my feet were so cold I had to get up.
Now typing with frozen fingers.

I work outside 12 hours a day. I'm just used to it. If I can stay warm, most people can.

Thermal base layer of long sleeve shirt and leggings under thick joggers and a thin sweater and sweatshirt.
Thermal socks. Ugg boots
Snood
Hooded padded coat
Wooly hat
Pair of latex gloves under fingerless gloves.
Lip balm

Our house is normally 17-18 degrees with the heating on for an hour in the morning as the bathroom is quite chilly and an hour in the evening.

We've taped up the windows, got draught excluders at all doors which we keep shut all the time. Stuck a pillow in a bin bag up the chimney to stop draughts. Curtains closed most of the time. Hot water bottles in bed. Blankets on the sofa, slippers on at all times. Hats worn inside or at least hoodies.

To be fair, it's how I grew up in the 70s so it's not a massive imposition. I'm in London, so appreciate we don't get as cold as a lot of the country.

Get yourself a low-energy heater, such as this one.

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0BCWMRV3S/

It's £25 with a 650W and 1000W heat setting
Roughly 22p per hour to run at 650W setting, so £1.75 for an 8 hour day.

We are using one in the office at home instead of the central heating, which costs £3-£4.an hour depending on temp.

Amrapaali · 08/12/2022 15:43

Completely agree with @LadyOfTheCanyon ideas for layering up. I walk around in two pairs of wooly socks for 6 months of the year!! I need to warm my extremities otherwise no amount of jumpers etc will do the trick.

I can highly recommend Uniqlos Heatech thermals- they are amazing! Thin, not bulky yet soo, soo warm. A close second is Sainsburys thermals range.

Trinity65 · 08/12/2022 15:43

I have that one as well, and feel exactly how you do when wearing it but it really is lovely and warm.
I am short so it comes down very long on Me which is a bonus (unless I am walking up the stairs when I have to lift it a bit as tripped up the stairs more than once in the Past) 😆

All electric heaters have the same efficiency, when running, 100%.

It's possible for one to use less energy than another because (a) only it has a thermostat that turns it off when the desired temperature is reached or (b) neither have a thermostat, but one puts out less heat than the other, which will use less energy, or (c) one has a timer that the other doesn't enabling it to be off when the other is on.

But in no case does one heater get more heat from the same amount of electricity. Because physics.

ThreeblackCats · 08/12/2022 15:45

Put your heating on.
go back to bed.
light a fire.
wrap up.
use a hot water bottle.
work from your local library.
visit your local ‘warm bank’ it’s like a food bank, but it has the heating on.
make yourself a hot cuppa.
do some starjumps.
go for a walk.
go to your local coffee shop.
get yourself a electric blanket. Some electric suppliers are actually giving them away.
buy yourself a calorgas or paraffin heater.

I’m not sure what else you expect mumsnet to do.

IamEarthymama · 08/12/2022 15:46

Hot water bottles are great for your toes.
We have lots of throws including a heated throw.

I have a faux Oodie, DW has a velvet knee length cardigan type jacket as she doesn't like the Oodie, feels it's too restrictive.

We also have an oil filled radiator and a small heater that blows out warm air!

After a life time of always being freezing cold, after a really awful Covid experience in 2020, I am now the warm one in our relationship.
There has to be some benefit I suppose.😳
It's odd to be the one being urged to "Feel my hands, they are frozen!"

I always wear socks, not in bed as I like the hot water bottle on my bare feet. Otherwise I have lots of warm socks.

I hoe everyone can keep warm, it's appalling that we are in this dire situation in 2022.

Yes this.

Less than a takeaway cup of coffee.

My DM always calls her dressing gown a 'housecoat'. I'm beginning to understand why and yes, it's great!

I don't work from home. But I'm surprised anyone wanting to stay at home now the temp has dropped and spend £££ in heating when the office will be warmer and you don't have to pay!

sittingonacornflake · 08/12/2022 15:50

Also freezing. WFH today and my house was below 13 degrees! Worked in a hat, scarf, lots of layers and my electric throw. Miserable really but it's costs me about a tenner to commute to the office and it takes 2.5 hours out of my day so being at home is the better option, just a cold one. When is the cold snap due to end?!

BarbedButterfly · 08/12/2022 15:51

Today is brutal. Wearing three layers, have a blanket and hot water bottle and am so cold. Had heating on for an hour an a half already, but face and hands are freezing.

Bonjovispyjamas · 08/12/2022 15:53

I still have my Window open every day, one advantage to the menopause at least, always bloody hot 🤣

theswoot · 08/12/2022 15:54

@Ivyblu FT commutes for me and DH would still be more expensive than the amount I’m currently paying in utilities daily, plus would still need to keep some level of heating on for poor Ddog anyway, so WFH in my oodie it is!

Is it the first time you've seen one?

They are everywhere.

Ivyblu · 08/12/2022 16:02

@theswoot true I guess it depends how much your weekly travel/parking costs.

SinnerBoy · 08/12/2022 16:06

My wife's mate has a heated gilet thing. It's USB charged and she said, after the initial outlay, its very cheap to run. She wears it outside, too.
