Pushed to front of queue ...was I in the wrong?

Checked into a hotel last night.
Arrived shortly after 3pm and one man was checking everyone in.
There was quite a queue and took over 30 mins to be checked in.
Got up to room and the keycard wasn't working.
So back down I go and the queue was out of the door.
Thought to myself ..I'm not standing in that again.
So walk to the front and say excuse me..
Immediately people in the queue "there's a queue "
"End of the line is that way "
People start tutting etc after I explain I had already stood in queue.

The guy takes 1 minute to activate it and off I go.

Anyway was i in the wrong to push in?
Would you have done the same?

No, because I wouldn't know that others weren't in the same boat.

WhiteFire · 08/12/2022 12:22

Yes, I would have done the same.

Though this would never happen to me because regardless of how long a queue is I always seem to be at the end. 😀

Stompythedinosaur · 08/12/2022 12:22

I think you were unreasonable.

DillyDallyPop · 08/12/2022 12:22

I'd have done the same. You've already just done your waiting. Anyone else in the same situation could have nipped to the front and spoke up too.

Lurpackintheback · 08/12/2022 12:22

YANBU, lines for check in don’t apply for issues, same applies at counter service restaurants etc. you don’t see people waiting in the line at McDonald’s to flag they’ve been given the wrong order etc.

ArrrrrghStopLickingTheDog · 08/12/2022 12:22

Yes I would and have. I wouldn't mind if someone did that to me either. It's polite to inform the queue though

SillySausage81 · 08/12/2022 12:22

No, because you had already been served and there was a problem, so different rules apply.

It's like, if you're at McDonalds and everyone's queueing to order food, and you've just been given your food but you realise something's missing from the bag, you nip to the front of the queue, you don't join the end of the queue. I see this as the same situation.

snowissfalling · 08/12/2022 12:23

I didn't see why I should wait another half hour because someone couldn't check someone in correctly.
If it was a few people then I might have just got in line but there was so many people and 1 guy.

I'd have done the same as you. Don't waste anymore time even thinking about this. The member of staff could of sent you to the back, if it was appropriate, and they didn't.

Somethingsnappy · 08/12/2022 12:24

I would have done the same op. You'd already queued, and a mistake on their part led to the door issue. In essence, your 'turn' at the desk was not yet complete. If others in the queue were in the same boat as you, that's up to them. They would have had the right to skip the queue too, in the same circumstances.

Itsabitnotcold · 08/12/2022 12:24

I would have asked the people towards the front if they were queuing to check in or if they were having problems then asked if I could jump in

SillySausage81 · 08/12/2022 12:24

Exactly. You did nothing wrong, the other people probably didn't realise why you were going to the front. Just forget about it.

Sage396 · 08/12/2022 12:24

I worked hotel reception for many years and what you did was completely normal and people did it all the time. I would have found it weird if someone in that situation went to the back of the queue.

Eixample · 08/12/2022 12:26

You weren’t wrong to do it but it’s odd not to proactively explain to the people at the front of the queue

Overthebow · 08/12/2022 12:28

I would have done the same but I would have apologised and explained to the people in the queue first.

stopbeeping · 08/12/2022 12:28

You didn't skip the queue
That would be skipping if you checked in by jumping to the front

I dont wait in the queue for a trolley I go ask for example

Why did it take 30 mins to check in I would have left? Where are you staying Op I want to put it on my never go there list!!

Tiani4 · 08/12/2022 12:28

Yanbu
Yes i would have done the same and would have replied to the man
" I already did my queuing to get checked in, the keycard I was Given 4 mins ago doesn't actually work, so I've come back for them to correct it. They need to know they're missing a step or everyone queuing here will have same thing go wrong when checked in"

theemmadilemma · 08/12/2022 12:28

Nope I'm the strictest queuer ever and I'd have done the same. lol

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 08/12/2022 12:20

No, because I wouldn't know that others weren't in the same boat.

This. I had a situation recently where when we got to the room it was a double instead of a twin, so went downstairs and joined the end of long queue. It didn't even occur to me to jump the queue as I had no idea what other people were queuing for - could have been check in, key activation, problem with their room, something else.

Theydoyaknow · 08/12/2022 12:29

I would have done exactly the same as you.

WednesdayFridayAddams · 08/12/2022 12:30

I waited in the queue again when it happened to me.
I’m obviously weird.

It was actually hell as the queue for the lifts was so long it took forever to get to the room to find the key wouldn’t work so I walked down the stairs to, what I thought, was reception level only to find the stairs ended at a fire exit you shouldn’t open so I had to walk up a floor a queue for the bloody lift back to reception.
I nearly cried when the snotty receptionist then asked if I’d had it near my phone and deactivated the strip -No I bloody hadn’t! & the apology that it had been set to the wrong room was no consolation when I’d been on the go for 15 hrs already.

ahh that feels better.

saltofcelery · 08/12/2022 12:31

Of course you weren't being unreasonable. You didn't get the service you queued for initially (access to your hotel room) so you reported it hadn't worked. Far too many door mats around who'd re-queue!

For the people who would queue again, if you were served food in a busy cafe that was wrong, would you go to the back of the line or pop straight to the front to let them know?

KimberleyClark · 08/12/2022 12:35

No you did nothing wrong.

on a side note it never ceases to amaze me how long it takes to check in to a hotel even when you have booked in advance.

HarvestThyme · 08/12/2022 12:37

Yes, that's fine. It's the fault of the hotel for not having sufficient staff.

PrincessConstance · 08/12/2022 12:37

Eixample · 08/12/2022 12:26

You weren’t wrong to do it but it’s odd not to proactively explain to the people at the front of the queue

Why would she have to proactively explain to those at the front?
The request literally took a minute of time.
