Pushed to front of queue ...was I in the wrong?

Checked into a hotel last night.
Arrived shortly after 3pm and one man was checking everyone in.
There was quite a queue and took over 30 mins to be checked in.
Got up to room and the keycard wasn't working.
So back down I go and the queue was out of the door.
Thought to myself ..I'm not standing in that again.
So walk to the front and say excuse me..
Immediately people in the queue "there's a queue "
"End of the line is that way "
People start tutting etc after I explain I had already stood in queue.

The guy takes 1 minute to activate it and off I go.

Anyway was i in the wrong to push in?
Would you have done the same?

I'd have done the same.
You got tutted at because people were getting really pissed off and impatient about having to queue for 30 minutes to check in. That's absolutely ridiculous.
However, you did nothing wrong. The person checking you in hadn't done your keycard correctly so going up to have that done was just a continuation of your check in process.

YANBU. Never complain, never explain.

Of course explain to the person you are cutting in front of. That's just common decency.

Why would she have to proactively explain to those at the front?
The request literally took a minute of time.

Because the person at the front of the queue doesn’t know that it’s a quick question. If OP were just pushing in to do her whole check in, it would look exactly the same from that person’s perspective.
It surprises me that this isn’t clear to everyone, but perhaps that’s how some people end up in a lot of these squabbles while others don’t.

Sartre · 09/12/2022 14:47

I would absolutely have done the same thing. You already waited in the queue once, there’s no way you should have to wait from scratch for something like this.

GhostBridezilla · 10/12/2022 13:28

I’d have done the same. You already did your waiting and it wasn’t your fault that your card wasn’t working it was theirs!

2crazyboysandstillalive · 10/12/2022 13:30

Yes I would have done the same in fact I have, in the past. Those tutting would do exactly the same too.

Fleurdaisy · 10/12/2022 13:55

No, I’d have done the same, by then you were already a checked in guest and one minute to activate the key kept no one waiting.

BlancmanegeBunny · 10/12/2022 14:08

I would (and have) done the same.
You had already queued up and been checked in but the staff member messed it up.

Jaxhog · 10/12/2022 14:08

I would have (and have) done the same. I would probably grovel to the next person in the queue to be let in though.

Twiglets1 · 10/12/2022 14:23

I would have done the same.

But if I was in the queue I would have also been a person tutting 🤔

MadameMackenzie · 10/12/2022 14:28

As a disabled person I couldn't!

Theluggage15 · 10/12/2022 14:30

I have done the same as you and been at the front of queues when same thing as happened. Of course you don’t queue twice, that would be bonkers.

CatJumperTwat · 10/12/2022 14:35

It's really annoying for the people in the queue but no, you weren't unreasonable. The hotel is at fault for not having enough staff (though possibly they want to but can't recruit).

Zone2NorthLondon · 10/12/2022 14:48

Yes I’d go top of queue and I’d not be offering explanations about it either

AegonT · 10/12/2022 14:49

YANBU - you'd already done your queing. Tut back at the tutters.

That happened to me this year in the US. It was a pain in the arse because we'd had a long drive across California and our room was in an annexe quite a way from the main Reception and the rest of the family were all stood outside waiting with our suitcases to get in the room which opened onto the car park.

Even though I stood there pointedly with key card in hand just back from the man checking in, they still went through all the rigmarole of check-in shit about where such and such facility was, what time breakfast was etc. I waited patiently but I must have been waiting over 5 mins, then it took a mere 10 seconds to activate the card. It was clear that they hadn't finished my check-in process properly which was why the card didn't work so I could have been a bit grumpy with them because I'd had to wait because of their mistake and then the fact they ignored me in the queue. But I just sucked it up, however I felt irked about it.

So I don't know which way I fall on this one, OP! I guess if staffing wasn't an issue in the industry then there would have been someone else available.....

openscanofworms · 10/12/2022 16:37

I would’ve done the same but expected people not to like it!

RandomPerson42 · 10/12/2022 16:42

You were not in the wrong

twinklestarin · 10/12/2022 17:07

you should have told the person in the front of the que what was going on .. thats all

Haughlepuff · 08/03/2023 07:24

These days groups of people rarely stand in the queue all together. If I go in a group, some get a table and one will order. Especially if we got with my 2 year old - we’ll get a seat and my husband will order. I don’t think making sure you can sit down with what you order is classed as pushing in.
if you’re alone, put something on the table.

taxguru · 08/03/2023 07:40

No, you weren't in the wrong at all. You waited your turn at first like everyone else. You had to go back because of a mistake by the counter staff or a system failure, neither were your fault. You were absolutely in the right to go straight to the counter and not queue again.

I had to do it once at an airport check in desk where the boarding pass wouldn't read at the scanner to get through security. Lots of tutting etc from the queue, but I'd have missed my flight if I'd joined the long queue again.

Same when given the wrong change at a shop till, or bits of a food order missing or cold at McDonalds or Burger King.
