Pushed to front of queue ...was I in the wrong?

Checked into a hotel last night.
Arrived shortly after 3pm and one man was checking everyone in.
There was quite a queue and took over 30 mins to be checked in.
Got up to room and the keycard wasn't working.
So back down I go and the queue was out of the door.
Thought to myself ..I'm not standing in that again.
So walk to the front and say excuse me..
Immediately people in the queue "there's a queue "
"End of the line is that way "
People start tutting etc after I explain I had already stood in queue.

The guy takes 1 minute to activate it and off I go.

Anyway was i in the wrong to push in?
Would you have done the same?

I would have done the same (explaining loudly to the people at the front that I’d already queued and checked in).

DH would have gone back to the back of the line. He doesn’t like putting his head above the parapet in any way.

We argue about this kind of thing a fair bit.

ZenNudist · 08/12/2022 13:00

I'd have done the same. But I queue both sides in pret even when everyone else is standing in the long line.

browneyes35 · 08/12/2022 13:03

Isn't normal etiquette to try and approach the person at the front from the side so they know? Others will likely hear you ask. Or you ask another person at the front desk....

Wiaa · 08/12/2022 13:03

Perfectly normal! I did the same recently, really long queue got to our room and it wasn't made up. I went to the front to explain, I was told she couldn't tell me how long it would take so after talking to my husband I jumped the queue again to leave our luggage.

Suedomin · 08/12/2022 13:03

Ynbu you had already queued so I don't see why you should have to queue again. I think most people would have done the same

summergone · 08/12/2022 13:04

I would have done the same too

gertrudy · 08/12/2022 13:05

Absolutely not. You did the right thing.

There was no one else on the front desk!

poefaced · 08/12/2022 13:10

YANBU at all. Too many wet lettuces, you did well.

3peassuit · 08/12/2022 13:11

You shouldn’t have to queue twice. YANBU.

Thewindsofchange · 08/12/2022 13:14

I'd have probably done the British thing of saying to the person at the front 'Sorry do you mind if I just...' and then asked to guy to check the keycard quickly.
No need to join the end of the queue. If I was waiting in the quote I would expect anyone else in the same circumstances to do that too. It's a 30 second job and a continuation of your check in.

Moltenpink · 08/12/2022 13:14

Definitely not unreasonable. See also: setting the security alarm off with a forgotten tag

ILOVECHEESE79 · 08/12/2022 13:16

I would absolutely go straight to the front.

latetothefisting · 08/12/2022 13:20

I would have done the same, agree with the poster who said your turn wasn't yet over -you queued to get into your room, the issue meant you couldn't do that. If you'd queued to get your room key, taken your stuff upstairs then decided you wanted to book a restaurant reservation or something then that would be different and you should re-queue.

I would have probably mentioned to the next person due to be served what I was doing but not asked for permission. If you'd all been queuing that long they should have recognised you from queuing behind you for half an hour anyway!

Sounds like crap service on behalf of the hotel though!

I would have done the same as you and obviously made it clear to the waiting que the reason for me 'pushing in'.

But......can i ask, why this is weighing on your mind to ask? People were just tutting and doesnt seem like any issue!?

ImustLearn2Cook · 08/12/2022 13:21

Yanbu, I would have done the same.

I’m not sure if I would have explained to people in the queue unless it was obvious that they misunderstood and thought I was jumping the queue.

I would presume that most people would see and hear what I was saying and doing and realise that I had already queued and the hotel staff had made a mistake and would be ok with it. Just as I would if someone did it in front of me.

I was at a show once. We queued once to get ticket checked (we were early so no que). Went in and got.a drink.
About 30 minutes later we went outside for fresh air (with drinks) and when we skipped the que to get back in we were shouted at by a few people now in the very long que.

No way was I queuing again.

Bellaboo01 · 08/12/2022 13:22

Basically - what i'm saying is - dont worry about people 'tutting' - just enjoy your time x

Anotherproblem · 08/12/2022 13:22

I would have stood alongside of queue and explained in raised tone I have a issue with my key please and waited to be called to front by staff member

CowsInFields · 08/12/2022 13:27

I wouldn't do that, only because I know most people won't know why I 'jumped' the queue (don't want any negative energy my way 😂). I also wouldn't, because regardless of the matter, people are queuing (some might have been in the queue for the same reason as you).

However, what is done is done, no point thinking about it now Grin

Surely the Karen thing would be to be annoyed at this, not fine with it.

I don’t disagree with your sentiment but this isn’t the best example on here of it

cowsmilk156 · 08/12/2022 13:30

I don't think yabu. I would have done the same. You were already checked in as a guest.

PurpleButterflyWings · 08/12/2022 13:34

100% not in the wrong. YANBU @snowissfalling . Like fuck would I have waited another 20-30 minutes when the receptionist clearly didn't do the keycard for the door correctly in the first place.

knittingaddict · 08/12/2022 13:35

I would have done the same op, so if you are unreasonable, I am too.
