To expect no-outdoor-shoe households to provide slippers?

Just that - slides, or foot covers of some kind. Of course, if you know in advance it's different, but when you turn up for the first time at someone's house to be told "please take off outdoor shoes" at the door (which is reasonable, we all get to decide what happens in our own homes), surely something should be provided rather than expect visitors to pad about in bare feet, or socks.

Whenever I stay at a hotel, I always keep the slippers they provide (I don't wear them as I take my own, travel slippers) so the ones I take from the hotel are still wrapped. They were there for my and my husband's use so don't mind taking them home. I have a basket full of them now in my hall 😊 Most of my friends automatically take their shoes off when they come in, as I do in their homes, but I never ask them to. If they want, they can take a pair of the Hotel Slippers and take them home when they have finished.

@KickHimInTheCrotch I agree. Perfect solution for anti social souls (like myself).

If you force yourself upon me and my house, you can take your shoes off.

The only time I've ever been offered slippers when taking my shoes off is from my Russian sister in law.

In Russia, people generally carry their indoor shoes/slippers in a little bag with them when they go visiting.

And the German for this is "Hausschuhe" - when children start Kindergarten, the list of required equipment ALWAYS contains indoor shoes/Hausschuhe It's absolutely normal that you don't wear your outdoors shoes inside.

I like socks myself. Wearing outdoor shoes indoors in my own home is just a bit weird & uncomfortable.

Same thing in Poland. We always had to change shoes in school. Otherwise, janitor would chase us around school 😂

20viona · 06/12/2022 15:12

YABVVVVVU. You say it yourself, they are OUTDOOR shoes therefore leave them on the mat! I'd never expect someone to provide something for me, I'd be wearing socks though at this time of year!

daretodenim · 06/12/2022 15:13

Moving on to the end of the shoe-free visit is when you go to leave and then have to sit down to put your shoes on and do up the laces..and there's nowhere to sit. So you end up crouching on the floor while they're standing talking to you, or wobbling around on one leg.

I think if you're going to have no shoes, you must provide a place for guests to put their shoes on again in a dignified manner!

I have a (small) selection of easy/fast to put on shoes that I wear if visiting someone for the first time, just in case!

Given that I see people wearing their slippers to put the bins out and to pop over the road to the corner shop for milk, I'd be wary of the 'I've brought my own slippers' brigade unless the footwear has been put through @ShirleyPhallus's laundry regimen and it was filmed happening.

Apparently MNers take laundry very seriously!

My mate Neil only has one leg. Would small slippers be provided for his crutches?

Orangepolentacake · 06/12/2022 15:16

KirstenBlest · 06/12/2022 14:21

What size guest slippers would you need to get? What if you had visitors with small feet, some with large feet etc?
What if you invited people round and they had the same size feet?

Would shoe covers be acceptable? Might they be a bit slippery if you needed to go upstairs to the loo or something?

😂

ilovepixie · 06/12/2022 15:17

Any American or Australian posters? What happens in your houses?

TastesLikeFlavourlessFizz · 06/12/2022 15:17

Those of you who thinks it’s gross, would you not use the slippers in a spa or hotel?

If they’re cleaned between use, I can’t see the problem.

I largely take my shoes off at home but sometimes wander about in them as I try to get out of the house or if I’m in and out again quickly. I also don’t ask people to take theirs off (though they usually do). But I wouldn’t mind wearing clean slippers in somebody else’s home.

OhChristmasTreeOhChristmasTreeFaLaLa · 06/12/2022 15:17

I wouldn't want to put slippers on that had been worn by god knows who. Who on earth has room to stock multiple slippers in various sizes anyway, that's weird. Would be easier just to wear your socks, you know they are clean and the person wouldn't need to stock 30 pairs of slippers in case 6 people all sized 5 decided to visit at the same time.

BucketofTeaMassiveCake · 06/12/2022 15:18

YANBU and I also expect clean floors if you don't mind.

I'm sure I speak for most shoeless households when I say we can make exceptions for exceptional circumstances. We aren't lunatics, we're just people who prefer to avoid trailing mud and dirt in where possible. In the event of wheelchairs, crutches and other disabilities or medical issues, we'll deal with it.

MrKlaw · 06/12/2022 15:18

interesting. We're a shoes off house but don't provide guest slippers. We like to think our floors are kept clean enough that nobody would worry too much. But the idea of having options for guests is an interesting one.

I guess to offer correct sizes for everyone you'd need a little shelf like at the bowling alley that people can get some from, although you can get away with a few approxmate sizes as they're normally pretty forgiving (especially if you go with more sandal style ones)

People walking around inside with outdoor shoes on in the UK is one the greatest mysteries of the world.

I agree. I find it really weird and I wonder why it’s so different in Europe. Around where I live in London the pavements are so revolting that I feel sick just thinking about it…

But maybe things are changing. All the houses I have visited have had a shoes off policy.

cyclamenqueen · 06/12/2022 15:19

I’m always intrigued as to whether the shoe off households have dogs and cats and do they have to either where shoes outside that they can take off or have slippers inside.

Also most people only walk from car to house if coming for dinner how dirty can shoes get in such a short walk?

cyclamenqueen · 06/12/2022 15:19

Sorry ‘wear’

Bedtimeforever · 06/12/2022 15:20

great idea op. Even greater when the athletes foot you caught from sharing the slipper starts sprouting out your own.

Blossomtoes · 06/12/2022 15:20

But I have no idea why anyone would have cream carpets…

We’ve got cream carpets because we like them, despite being a shoes on house. I get really pissed off when people insist on taking their shoes off and cluttering my tiny hall up. It’s just as rude to remove your shoes when you’re asked not to as it is to keep them on when asked to take them off.

Bpdqueen · 06/12/2022 15:20

I always take my shoes of at other people's houses and just wear socks id feel weird not to but to be fair all my familyandfriends have clean houses id probably feel different if their homes where dirty. I don't ask people to take their shoes of in my home put prefer it if they do. Communal slippers is just disgusting and luckily never been anywhere, where there a thing

No chance I'd wear communal slippers

Mines a shoes off house. If someone didn't want to take their shoes off, they can stay outside😂

Always intrigued?

Yes, pets do sometimes track stuff in or bring in dead mice or have accidents. We decide we're prepared to put up with that when we get pets but we don't need to make it worse with human sized feet. Pets don't tend to wear shoes so we just try to work with what we've got.

Most people wear their shoes for more than just walking to and from the car, even if that's all that did on this particular journey.

You know all this intriguing stuff anyway, though.

Hugasauras · 06/12/2022 15:23

Only on MN does this cause such fretting. In my world, most people just take their shoes off without being asked when it's clear that's the house 'rule' and there's no stress about it. I don't need slippers when I go to someone's house. I wear socks, like I do in my own house. It's such a non-issue.

Pushmepullu · 06/12/2022 15:23

People who want guests to take their shoes off and don’t tell them beforehand are selfish in my opinion. I have foot problems and so can’t walk around bare foot, even if I am only sitting down I still have to get boots back on which is really difficult without a shoe horn as my feet swell.
Yes, your house your rules, but you would normally know the rules of the game before deciding to play.
