To expect no-outdoor-shoe households to provide slippers?

Just that - slides, or foot covers of some kind. Of course, if you know in advance it's different, but when you turn up for the first time at someone's house to be told "please take off outdoor shoes" at the door (which is reasonable, we all get to decide what happens in our own homes), surely something should be provided rather than expect visitors to pad about in bare feet, or socks.

Eugh no gross. Don’t want to share slippers with multiple houseguests.

I like when these threads get to the class chat.

I provide glass slippers for visitors to my castle

pizzaHeart · 06/12/2022 14:53

we are shoes off house so I assume the same about others and take my shoes/ slippers/ extra socks/ spare socks or just plan to stay in socks / tights depending on the length/ nature of the visit . Sometimes I do forget then I just stay in my socks/ tights, surely people are wearing some at this time of the year.
I consider it’s a courtesy to the hosts not to bring extra dust/ mud/ s**t with me.

Providing communal slippers is weird.

What's wrong with socks?

TwitchyJerk · 06/12/2022 14:54

I do have some guest slippers that get washed in between each use but I do feel weird offering them out. I have a pair for my mum that don't get washed every time she visits.

GratefulCheddar · 06/12/2022 14:54

I’m Chinese heritage and shoes off is always happening.
My massively wealthy brother has brand new slippers for any guest and they can take them when they leave.
My friends know to bring theirs.

@Delatron I have cream carpet :)

Who wants to tell her about bed sheets and cutlery?

steppemum · 06/12/2022 14:55

I lived in a country where you had to take off shoes (and practically you were usually in warm boots covered in snow or slush)
There was always a box of slippers to wear and it would have been considered odd to just wear socks and not put on slippers.

I hated it.
I have big feet so always had to wear a pair of the 'men's' slippers which looked different to the 'women's' slippers, and that made me self conscious.
I don't like wearing other people's slippers either.
But it was the cultural norm so you had to.

In UK we now always take our shoes off, and I am happy to walk round in my socks. I never insist guests do, and if my carpet gets grubby, then so be it.

SantasGrotty · 06/12/2022 14:55

Yabu. I don't want to wear other people's shoes. I have socks.

Singlebutmarried · 06/12/2022 14:55

I sometimes take slippers with me, depends on the house. I do also know people where you wouldn’t dare take your shoes off and you change all clothes as soon as you get home.

I don’t mind if people keep their shoes on if it’s dry outside. I do mind if the come in with muddy feet (looking at you DD and DH).

Would happily provide sliders or similar for people

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 06/12/2022 14:55

Never been a shoes off house. If someone asked I would without hesitation. Can't imagine putting on random slippers though!

For me, nothing is all. Don't care about bare feet either. But some people get cold feet without shoes on. So I've got some slippers on offer if they want them.

Regular guests tend to bring their own.

YABU, people are so weird about shoes, some of you wouldn’t accept an invitation again if you had to take your shoes off? Wow. I don’t have that many people in and out of my house but I’m kind of glad. It’s just not worth all the judgement if this is what people think.

I agree... Sounds bizarre that this is being discussed the way it is.

Babooshka1991 · 06/12/2022 14:57

My Chinese relatives do this, I love it when all our family are sat there in our matching slippers

Gazelda · 06/12/2022 14:59

Crocs. Run them through the dishwasher between guests. Xmas Grin

Personally, I don't ever have visitors so it's not a problem.

NotQuiteHere · 06/12/2022 15:00

It's sImple: if you visit someone for the first time, bring your own slippers just in case.

What if my dishwasher is already full with the dog bowl and toilet brush?

StephanieSuperpowers · 06/12/2022 15:01

Shoes on, shoes off, I don't particularly care as long as people are feel cared for. As far as I'm concerned, my job as a host is to attend to my guests' comfort. So if someone is insisting on shoes off, they should have made some kind of provision for the people they're asking - either by telling them in advance so that they can make suitable arrangements with sock and footwear or by providing some foot covering.

Just getting people to remove their shoes at your door with no notice or provision does seem very unwelcoming.

LadyOfTheFliessssss · 06/12/2022 15:01

I don't think it's the norm at all. Or maybe I'm just not friends with people who would be fussy to this extent.

Viviennemary · 06/12/2022 15:01

I wouldnt use communal footwear. Most unhygenic.

Mother slipper holding slippers for guests. I'm shocked such thing is also being sold in the UK😂I like idea of new slippers!

AutumnCrow · 06/12/2022 15:01

Given that I see people wearing their slippers to put the bins out and to pop over the road to the corner shop for milk, I'd be wary of the 'I've brought my own slippers' brigade unless the footwear has been put through @ShirleyPhallus's laundry regimen and it was filmed happening.

Hankunamatata · 06/12/2022 15:02

Nope grim to wear someone else's sliders or slippers. Much prefer just to be in own socks

Perhaps I was a little hasty in my reply...

If a close friend or family member came to visit and it was chilly then I would offer them a pair of slippers, but the idea that I would only remove my shoes in another persons home if slippers were provided (and would feel put about if they weren't) is weird.

Does that make sense?

FoldemUp · 06/12/2022 15:03

The only time I've ever been offered slippers when taking my shoes off is from my Russian sister in law.

In Russia, people generally carry their indoor shoes/slippers in a little bag with them when they go visiting.

And the German for this is "Hausschuhe" - when children start Kindergarten, the list of required equipment ALWAYS contains indoor shoes/Hausschuhe It's absolutely normal that you don't wear your outdoors shoes inside.

I like socks myself. Wearing outdoor shoes indoors in my own home is just a bit weird & uncomfortable.
