To expect no-outdoor-shoe households to provide slippers?

Just that - slides, or foot covers of some kind. Of course, if you know in advance it's different, but when you turn up for the first time at someone's house to be told "please take off outdoor shoes" at the door (which is reasonable, we all get to decide what happens in our own homes), surely something should be provided rather than expect visitors to pad about in bare feet, or socks.

I always take my slippers when I visit peoples houses for socialising. Can't bear chilly feet.

I think providing shared slippers is odd. No shoes means wander round in socks!

It's an Eastern European thing ime. Just doesn't work terribly well if you're at the upper end of the size charts. The number of much-too-small tapochki I've had inflicted on me...!

RitaFires · 06/12/2022 14:28

I'd rather just be informed about what to bring. I would worry about communal slippers not fitting, I wouldn't want to stretch them out if too small or fall over if they're too big.

I say this on all these threads - other peoples floors are disgusting. I do not want to tread sock footed on your discarded Lego, cats fur, baby food cast from the highchair and used syringes. To be honest I don't fancy communal slippers either. I go into lots of people's homes for work. Fortunately we are no longer allowed to take our shoes off, even if asked. Nor are we allowed to wear the ridiculous polyethylene shoe covers some people try to give us. Thank God.

One of my old neighbours floors apparently looked like a household you wipe your feet on the way out.....

Topseyt123 · 06/12/2022 14:29

I agree, and I think that the pair of slippers I wear should have my name in. They should be my own special pair, to be worn by nobody else.

Talipesmum · 06/12/2022 14:29

YANBU but I can see why lots would disagree.

Oh, I'm so annoyed. I've gotta go out a minute. This is going to be a cracking thread. The shoes on, shoes off threads are always brilliant fun. I'm going to 'watch the thread' and have a look when I am home at a bit later. LOL.

😆 I got deleted a few weeks ago for trolling a laundry thread. Always worth a read.

JamMakingWannaBe · 06/12/2022 14:29

I have a friend who provides not only indoor slippers but outdoor/garden slippers too!

If we are having drinks in the garden, you have to swap if you nipping back inside for something. She has a massive basket of each in a range of sizes.

I love it because they are nicer than my old M&S ones (and I can't seem to get DH to take his outdoor shoes off in our house!)

The communal sharing thing doesn't bother me at all.

Mrsherdwick · 06/12/2022 14:31

This thread reminds me of the time I entered a house as a community nurse. I was told to take my shoes off at the door which I did.

A few minutes into my visit the house was raided by about 6 policemen. Funnily they weren’t asked to remove their shoes!!

Iwantmyoldnameback · 06/12/2022 14:31

I can't bear the feel of socks on carpet and slippers on hard floors can be dangerous, wonder if anyone has ever been sued for someone going A over T on a polished wooden floor?

Badbadbunny · 06/12/2022 14:33

We provide disposable plastic shoe covers. Solves all the problems really. People just carry on wearing their shoes/boots.

Somethingvague · 06/12/2022 14:34

The only time I've ever been offered slippers when taking my shoes off is from my Russian sister in law.

I think most people are happy just wearing socks. Or if you're that bothered, bring your own alternative with you.

Itstheimplication · 06/12/2022 14:35

YABU you’re going to a house not a hotel. Just assume everyone will
expect shoes off and keep some ballerina slippers or slipper socks in your bag if it bothers you that much.

Yabu and Yanbu at the same time!

This is one of those things that's very culturally linked

There's no expectation to provide them in the uk. Brits think it's weird and wouldn't do it.

But other parts of Europe its the norm.

And actually it makes a lot of sense. It's a logical idea.

But because it isn't culturally norm here, I think doing it slightly weird out guests so does not make sense for welcoming to your home.

Tbh we have friends who occasionally will now bring their own and actually I think I'm more tempted to bring my own in future to theirs as its not weird within the social group.

So in theory I think I'm in favour of it, but in practice I don't think the uk is quite ready for it either. I think it will go that way but we aren't there yet.

Toomanysleepycats · 06/12/2022 14:36

I’ve been caught out a couple of times by this. I never wear socks, so it means being barefoot, which I don’t like for many reasons.

So this thread has just reminded me to pop a pair of socks in my bag and car.

Perhaps the solution for OP is just to keep some thicker socks in her bag in case this happens.

Nsenene · 06/12/2022 14:36

We have a bag of guest slippers in various sizes. I have a crawling baby so absolutely don't want shoes indoors.

So you tell people to remove their shoes at your door and put on a pair that someone else has worn in your house for hours?

Gross.

Not really. Both kinds of shoe covers impede your escape.

Tripsabroad · 06/12/2022 14:38

Everyone I know has the expectation of shoes off in the house.

I'm fine with socks. Occasionally take my own slippers.

I don't want to wear someone else's slippers thanks.

That was terribly harsh of MNHQ. Not like the old days when they'd have joined in.

KnittedCardi · 06/12/2022 14:38

Actually I think it is the norm for people to come prepared to take off their shoes these days. All the workmen we have had recently take their shoes off at the door, or have shoe covers. All my friends take their shoes off and pad around in socks, or tights, even for dinner parties!

DappledThings · 06/12/2022 14:38

I just find the idea of keeping shoes on in anyone's house odd. I take my shoes off at the door always, never wait to be asked.

Shoes are for outside and indoor spaces that are communal. They just aren't things I find normal in a domestic setting. I take them off in a hotel room as soon as I'm through the door too as that feels like a secondary domestic space.

antelopevalley · 06/12/2022 14:38

I do not mind being in my socks if they do not have slidy floors. I will not go barefoot though.
My DP who is disabled nearly fell over in someones house when he had to take his shoes off and their floors were highly polished. I caught him in time. It was dangerous and we have not been back.

I hope you reuse them, absolutely terrible for the environment

God I always keep shoes on in a hotel room.
