To expect no-outdoor-shoe households to provide slippers?

Just that - slides, or foot covers of some kind. Of course, if you know in advance it's different, but when you turn up for the first time at someone's house to be told "please take off outdoor shoes" at the door (which is reasonable, we all get to decide what happens in our own homes), surely something should be provided rather than expect visitors to pad about in bare feet, or socks.

As likely as someone is to lick their carpet after I have walked on it with shoes.

My baby would.

Of course I do and I know what's going on in my home. I have no idea what is going on in other peoples (especially where they have kids, or if there are a few men with bad aims guests using the toilet that evening) and I'd rather not be walking about in someone elses toilet in my socks. 🤮

Unless you clean after after use during a dinner party 🤣

Good God. So when you stay the night at someone's house, you don't ever go barefoot in the bathroom, even to shower, because you think there might be excrement on the floor?

Oh bollocks you do. You go barefoot fine. God, the crap people will make up to score points in an Internet argument.

My parent's friends have a no shoe policy at their house (they sometimes rent it on Airbnb so like the floors to be in good condition!)
They have a box of those hotel slippers at the door that people can use which I've always thought was a good idea

I bet their Airbnb guests just keep their shoes on.

Depends on the house. Visiting a family member is very different from son footballs teams after game party with a household of people drinking, young boys messing about and a couple of toilets shared between 30+ people. Two black and white scenarios and there are many in-between that different people will feel (un)comfortable with.

I never mentioned excrement, that is you exaggerating for effect.

The point being some people will feel uncomfortable and I would be uncomfortable in some peoples toilets in socks. I don't think that is an extreme statement that warrants being called a liar because because I have a different opinion to you. That reflects much more on you than me.

I definitely don’t at my in-laws especially in the middle of the night because I’ve gone to find the floor around the toilet covered in droplets and the toilet unflushed. The sink is a good distance from the toilet and there are towels to wipe your hands on the other side of the sink far from the toilet so yes I’m wearing flip flops in the bathroom.

QS90 · 08/12/2022 23:15

@SeemsSoUnfair You can always change your socks when you get home, then you're only walking any potrntial poo germs through the hosts own house. I always ALWAYS take my shoes and socks off by the front door after soft play for this reason 😶

I love how divisive this topic is 😂Thread sounds like me and the OH when we first moved in together! I was vindicated when he saw a rat cruising along the street in broad daylight, a few weeks in.

radrado · 08/12/2022 23:22

Anyone else get sweaty feet in the summer when wearing shoes? I would hate to put my sweaty bare feet or socked feet on a tiled floor and everyone see my sweaty footprints. Eeek! So embarrassing.

Ineke · 08/12/2022 23:32

I am always sitting on the floor, either to spread out my paper work, wrap presents, rest an aching back by lying down on flat surface, and many other things, so I do not want outdoor shoes worn on the area that I sit and work at.
We all take shoes off, and visitors do too without being asked. I don’t provide slippers or plastic covers. Kitchen has a washable floor so shoes are no problem there as floor can be wiped down. I’m not shampooing carpets very often, no need if shoes are not worn on them. I’ve lived in the Far East and India for quite some time where it is the norm to take shoes off before entering someone’s house. It is catching on here now.

What exactly were we supposed to imagine you were worried would be near the toilet?

Anyway, it's Internet argument bollocks.

I did mention "men with bad aims" so you didnt need to use that over active imagination of yours that much.

But keep going with making things up if it helps. You are the only one who is arguing here. I am simply stating my own opinion and how I feel about the thread topic.

YABU how many pairs of slipper do you expect people to own. Just take your shoes off

saffy2 · 09/12/2022 07:21

What kind of people have to be asked to take off their shoes in someone else’s house?! 🙈 like it’s just common courtesy and politeness! I would never walk round someone else’s house with my shoes on!! And I don’t think I ever have to ask people to remove their shoes at my house either. It’s just a politeness thing. You go in someone’s house you take off your shoes. That’s just, the norm!!

Yes I don't get this either. I automatically take shoes off in someone's house or put on shoe covers if I'm there for work and everyone does the same in my house, although I'm not overly bothered about shoes on in mine unless it's very wet/muddy out.

Moving on to the end of the shoe-free visit is when you go to leave and then have to sit down to put your shoes on and do up the laces..and there's nowhere to sit. So you end up crouching on the floor while they're standing talking to you, or wobbling around on one leg.

I think if you're going to have no shoes, you must provide a place for guests to put their shoes on again in a dignified manner!

I have a (small) selection of easy/fast to put on shoes that I wear if visiting someone for the first time, just in case!

Yes I agree, we have a bench with the shoes on a rack underneath it for this exact reason. However if people don’t have a bench I just sit on the floor 😂

Cheesuswithallama · 09/12/2022 07:36

I always love good old Mumsnet shoes on/off debate😂

We always have washable slippers.

radrado · 09/12/2022 11:48

It’s not the norm where I live. Why is that hard to believe? Different people do different things shocker. Very insular thinking that.

radrado · 09/12/2022 11:49

That’s @saffy2 and @RunLolaRun102

radrado · 09/12/2022 11:52

I mean some of my friends are shoes off some aren’t It’s not the norm either way. I just adapt accordingly. We’re shoes on ourselves downstairs generally but off if muddy. My husband wears his shoes everywhere which does annoy me upstairs if he doesn’t realise they’re muddy.

BucketofTeaMassiveCake · 09/12/2022 14:53

I've got some quite well-off friends and they think that shoes-off types are proper weird.
