To expect no-outdoor-shoe households to provide slippers?

Just that - slides, or foot covers of some kind. Of course, if you know in advance it's different, but when you turn up for the first time at someone's house to be told "please take off outdoor shoes" at the door (which is reasonable, we all get to decide what happens in our own homes), surely something should be provided rather than expect visitors to pad about in bare feet, or socks.

Surely you'd be wearing socks anyway if you were wearing shoes? YABU.

I never wear socks. I never wear shoes that require me to wear socks .

vitahelp · 07/12/2022 18:54

Not a chance I’d wear some random slippers at someone’s house, would probably end up with verrucas! I just take my own/wear socks if I know I’ll be at someone’s house for a while especially if it’s tiled.
We’re a no shoe house and don’t offer footwear to people. No one has minded so far, I like to think my friends & family value my company enough that a no shoe rule wouldn’t prevent them from visiting 😂

GUARDIAN1 · 07/12/2022 19:15

I'd be OK just in my socks.

dcthatsme · 07/12/2022 19:18

It's become very much the norm to ask people to take off shoes. If the house is warm and clean you don't really need slippers do you? My sister asked me to bring slippers but I just preferred to be in my socks. I'd think it was unreasonable if it was a freezing house with stone or ceramic floors though.

Blossomtoes · 07/12/2022 19:22

In certain age groups and social circles. Not mine. My friends would think I’d lost my mind if I did it.

I hate houses where you have to remove your shoes, especially where you’ve gone for dinner and made an effort. We have wooden floors and rugs downstairs which we mop/ hoover regularly. No one has died to date. If you are going to make me take my shoes off then at least warn me so I can bring my own slippers- I wouldn’t wear a communal slipper either (an absolute recipe for a fungal infection if you ask me).

This. So weird to invite people for dinner / smarter type of event and then ask them to pad about in their socks or slippers. Makes people look ridiculous

What even in December? Either you live somewhere warm or the insides of your shoes are gross.

humblebeedle · 07/12/2022 19:26

I take my own slippers to friends houses that have cold floors

purplebunny2012 · 07/12/2022 19:34

YABU, what is wrong with being in your socks? I hate wearing my shoes indoors

I’ve got a stash of plastic shoe covers for workmen. You could have a pair of those 😂

Just wear socks or take socks when visiting friends who don’t want gross outdoor muck spread all over their clean floors.

dh wouldn't wear disposable shoe covers as they are slip hazard especially going up and down stairs and ladders or if working with tools and would invalidate his insurance if he had an accident wearing them.

He wouldn't wear them anyway, but has also never actually checked if the homeowner would have any liability if they provided inappropriate shoe covers that caused the slip.

Hope you inform tradesmen of this before wasting their time asking them to come for quotes or work so they can decline the job as they should be concerned about their safety and insurance.

LaDamaDeElche · 07/12/2022 19:41

I live in Spain and it's a shoes off country in the sense that the overwhelming majority of people wear slippers in their own homes. However, I've never been asked to remove my shoes as a guest.

It's fine in your own home, but surely you accept that some people will find it a overly familiar?

sgtmajormum · 07/12/2022 19:42

I take my slippers with me when visiting. I get really cold feet and no way I'm sitting there in my socks 🙃

VisitingThem · 07/12/2022 19:44

I was working on a barn conversion where the client meetings were at the clients house. My first time there I did not know about the shoes off policy and had no socks on. Half way through the meeting the cat licked my foot and I screamed :(

StephanieSuperpowers · 07/12/2022 19:46

People asked you to remove your shoes in a barn? How filthy were the shoes?

Scarriff · 07/12/2022 19:46

We take our own shoes off indoors and are usually in socks or barefoot. In cold weather I have slippers. I don't ask visitors to remove their shoes because it can be a nuisance. Some do especially if they come from that sort of society. Its up to them..

You mean familiar like intimate? They are just feet in socks, not an overly personal body part to show? That's not something I understand.

StephanieSuperpowers · 07/12/2022 19:51

Not everyone wants to make themselves that much at home that they're going around in socks.

nokidshere · 07/12/2022 19:56

I have no preference to what people do, keep shoes on or off it makes no difference to me. I'm barefoot all the time, I only put something on my feet if I leave the house. DH and both sons always have socks and slippers/trainers on.

We don't all live in Downton Abbey, ma'am.

Delatron · 07/12/2022 20:01

Do the shoes off houses have parties? What happens then? Is everyone walking around in funny slippers?

maddy68 · 07/12/2022 20:02

I could not put my feet into pre worn slippers!

Not everyone wants to make themselves that much at home that they're going around in socks.

It's like taking your coat off to me.

My DGM prefers shoes as she finds walking more difficult without them, could only wear well fitting shoe type slippers. That reason I understand. However, I know her shoes will be clean, worn inside or on pavement only, so it's not a problem.
