Partner brushing your teeth (lighthearted)

Please settle a debate between me and a friend. After decades of friendship she has just revealed that her husband sometimes brushes her teeth for her! She says she sometimes doesn't have the energy after looking after young kids all day and it's nice to have someone take care of you. I felt physically repulsed! The idea of someone being that close to me, cleaning my teeth, peering into my mouth - I'm shuddering just typing this. Each of us thinks the other is being odd so...

YABU - a partner brushing your teeth is the highest level of intimacy that can be achieved

YANBU - it's an obscene act that shouldn't be talked about in polite society

Really? To brush her teeth?! It's not exactly a strenuous, lengthy activity. How odd. Confused

Youcunnyfunt · 06/12/2022 14:25

This is so bloody strange! 😂

I've got images of a poor lady with feet thudding and dragging up the stairs, slumped on the toilet seat, with head tilted back, messy hair straggling across her face, with her gob opened just wide enough for her husband to gently brush her teeth for her. Her arms, of course, are useless because she is so tired.

Absolutely hilarious. Too tired to brush your teeth! How bloody dramatic is she!

Theydoyaknow · 06/12/2022 14:33

Fucking ridiculous, does he change her tampon for her too when she is too tired? She sounds like a gobshite.

I laughed out loud at this 😂

TeaAndStrumpets · 06/12/2022 14:42

Do you think he flosses them as well? That could be a deal breaker ;-)

Cigarettesaftersex1 · 06/12/2022 14:44

It wouldn't be my thing but to be repulsed and think it's obscene are quite strong reactions

AriettyHomily · 06/12/2022 15:00

I've
Never been so tired that I couldn't brush my own teeth. Pissed yes, tired no. Either way I don't want someone else doing it. It's like reverting to a parent / child relationship,

AuntMarysPinny · 06/12/2022 18:41

Honestly I thought everyone would find it weird so the fact there's some other people out there who wouldn't mind it has made me think again. I've told my friend she's not alone and we've decided never to mention it ever again 😂

I've just had a flashback to my brother's then girlfriend brushing my teeth when I was wasted but insisted I couldn't go to bed without brushing my teeth.

I didn't even like her that much!

AuntMarysPinny · 06/12/2022 18:45

@IDontWantToBeAPie @Christmasnero Haha, that's a very good point, I should have thought of that before! I don't know why I find brushing teeth unacceptable compared to everything else!

I’d appreciate it if I broke both my arms but otherwise no thanks!

weegiemum · 06/12/2022 18:49

11 years ago I developed an autoimmune neurological disorder and lost the ability to use my hands for a few weeks. My dh brushed my teeth and washed my hair for me during this time. Luckily with OT input I regained these skills.

I really don't get the concept of being too tired to brush your teeth, even a cursory brush would be better and honestly less effort than having it done for me!

IncessantNameChanger · 06/12/2022 18:50

I can't get worked up over this. I think that's pretty mild on the up close and personal front tbh. Dh has cleaned me up after I've been pissed as a fart and been sick over myself. Having your teeth brushed seems a bit mild in comparison.

Stressedmum2017 · 06/12/2022 18:51

Obscene and repulsive is quite dramatic, I mean there isn't anything actually unhygienic about it. But weird yeah and kinda strange like how exhausted are you? No matter how ill or whatever I've been I've never needed someone to brush my teeth for me! Plus I brush like a maniac so don't think anyone could do it the way I like.

Mentalpiece · 06/12/2022 18:54

Many years ago I had a serious accident which left me immobile for a few weeks.
My husband had to shower me, take me to the loo and then wipe my bum as well as change my sanitary protection.
He also had to cut up my food and feed me.
Him brushing my teeth was nothing in comparison.
Your friend is very strange.

Glassslapper · 06/12/2022 19:04

You can tell who on here doesn’t have a very loving relationship irl.

Its sweet to do the basics for the one you love if they’re just not feeling it. I actually think it’s pathetic some on here are trying to call your friend names for wanting to be pampered a bit.

Fairislefandango · 06/12/2022 19:05

YANBU. Not obscene, but weird and kind of pathetic!

DogfordCats · 06/12/2022 19:08

If I were so exhausted I couldn't even brush my own teeth I'd want him taking on more stuff with the kids or round the house so I didn't get in that state in the first place, not shoving a toothbrush in my gob and probably giving me bleeding gums on top of everything else. Weird.

SpicyFoodRocks · 06/12/2022 19:13

No thanks. If I was that tired then I would just take a crazy risk and not brush them that night.

jetadore · 06/12/2022 19:16

Each day we stray further from god’s light.

JaneJeffer · 06/12/2022 19:49

Ugh

AuntMarysPinny · 06/12/2022 21:17

@DogfordCats wow, your comment made my jaw drop cos actually, I think you've hit the heart of it there. Given me something to think about this evening
