To book a hotel just so I can have a shower?

In the middle of bathroom renovations. Now been ten days without a bathroom. We have a toilet we can flush with a bucket đŸ¤¢but that’s all.

Ive been strip washing in the kitchen every day so I know theoretically I am not dirty but I feel disgusting. I’ve managed to wash my hair once in the sink, not that successfully and that feels minging too.

A cheap hotel for a night (eg two days of showering!) would be at least £50 and really can’t afford it (bathroom gone way over budget), but we have at least another week of this and I’m not sure I can bear it!!

If you're in South Lanarkshire you can shower at mine!

I'm intrigued at the notion that some railway stations and motorway services have showers.

Reading Motoway Services have showers. Noticed this when I stopped there the other day. After a very long drive, I did regret that I didn't have a towel handy or else I might have given them a go!

WindyHedges · 05/12/2022 10:43

My house renovations happened over several years. I joined a gym.

I got very fit , I had hot showers every day and now I have a lovely house with several bathrooms, and I’m still very fit as I mostly shower at the gym. (Great way to save money on power too!)

Chickenvoicesinmyhead · 05/12/2022 10:50

I would go to the spa, speak to the manager nicely, explain your situation, offer to pay and say you've got your own soaps etc so they know you're trying to not take the piss. There's a good chance they'll let you use a shower for free. Has to be worth a try.

If you're in/ near Milton Keynes, you can pop round to ours for a shower. Otherwise I would just bite the bullet and pay out for the cheapest possible hotel or b&b.

I'm sure you mean well and chances are that OP is lovely, but you have literally not the faintest idea about who this person is, why would you be offering them to come into your home? Not sensible.

SpinningFloppa · 05/12/2022 11:36

I’m surprised just how many people have invited a stranger to shower in their home when they have no idea who the are so will be giving their address out to some random person on the internet when they have no idea if anything they are saying is even true (no offence op..)

BayCityTrollers · 05/12/2022 11:40

We did nearly 4 weeks, downstairs loo but nothing else. I did look into gym membership but it’s actually quite pricey. I was fine until week 3 when it really got to me. Didn’t feel dirty though, just annoying as it got colder.

It was worth it in the end but never again. My advice is just stick it oh or ask a friend to borrow their shower. Our bathroom also went over budget and I’m glad I didn’t spend any more than I had to.

BackOnTheBandWagon · 05/12/2022 11:47

Neighbours? I know you've said you've moved to a new area, but are there any you're on "hello" terms with that you could ask? One way to get to know them better!

Willmafrockfit · 05/12/2022 11:47

an Air BNB?
is that reaonable?

honeyandbutterontoast · 05/12/2022 11:47

I really do appreciate the offers of showers but I just couldn’t shower in someone’s house I didn’t know. I’m really funny about that kind of thing, but I’m sure you all have really lovely bathrooms and I’m not jealous at all đŸ˜‚

yeah gym membership would have been pretty pricey but I did have all these plans about how I would get so fit in a couple of weeks, maybe meet someone at the gym, etc. Like a Hallmark Christmas film! Lol. Sadly I didn’t sort it out plus I’m too knackered with the decorating to consider any more exercise!

Normally ywnbu at all (recently had this situation and contemplated it) however if you can’t afford it you can’t afford it.

I’d be pleading to friends/family on WhatsApp. If you were my neighbour and a nice person I’d totally welcome you in.

londonrach · 05/12/2022 12:02

We managed weeks without a shower or running water....friends and neighbours....we were vvv lucky. Never do it again as hell. Ask friends and neighbours x

BeyondTheLetterOfTheLawTheLetter · 05/12/2022 12:10

Couple of years back my new neighbour asked if they could borrow the shower while their bathroom was done. Now they're our best friends.

Knock on next door đŸ™‚

Are you near a motorway? Services often have showers.

CaptainMyCaptain · 05/12/2022 12:17

Idbetternamechange · 04/12/2022 22:37

Trial gym membership?

I was going to say this. I knew some people who lived on a canal boat and used a gym near the mooring for showers.

Willmafrockfit · 05/12/2022 12:26

go to your leisure centre and use their pool, cant be that grimey?

latetothefisting · 05/12/2022 12:32

I would check the motorway services too. They all have individual locks. If you are anywhere near Gloucester aka the poshest services ever theirs looked amazing.

Either that or one of the cheap gyms even if it's a bit further away - my fairly small city has at least 8 of the pure gym/the gym/energies fitness type places, way cheaper than a council centre. It's 14.99 per month for an off peak membership and the showers have always been immaculate and empty. Thet are open 24 hours and you can see how many people are there on the app so could see in advance when would be a quiet time to go, or could link it in with some Christmas shopping etc.

Using the pool instead of a shower would be disgusting. Using the shower facilities at the Leusure Centre would be fine.

latetothefisting · 05/12/2022 12:40

Everyone saying to use the local leisure centre/pool - every single one in my whole county is now an open plan "family" style one - so no separate male or female areas and showers open onto the pool area, which itself has floor to ceiling glass windows to the car park and street on one side and reception area/cafe on the other.

I actually left and went to a private gym that still had separate (and enclosed) male/female changing rooms because I felt far too uncomfortable walking around there (from shower to changing cubicle) with just a towel on, and showering with swimsuit on didn't feel very clean!

Seriously??

Youcunnyfunt · 05/12/2022 13:42

I used to camp a lot, so I know there are public showers available in lots of areas if you look hard enough:

  • Lots of gyms will provide showers only (no gym membership required) for £2-3
  • Some service stations have showers
  • Lots of beach towns have public showers on the beach front for a small charge
  • Local camping sites may provide showers for a small charge (no camping required)
  • Some supermarkets even have basic showers depending on the area!
WindyHedges · 05/12/2022 13:46

I'm intrigued at the notion that some railway stations and motorway services have showers.

Why @704703hey ? It's quite standard. I often have a shower at Paddington on my home from Heathrow (a long journey). It wakes me up & helps with the jetlag/tiredness as I do the last 3 hours of a long haul journey (ie train home).

Frabbits · 05/12/2022 13:50

Years ago when I was in the same situation I went to a youth hostel and asked very nicely if I could use a shower and offered to pay a nominal fee. They just let me use it.

I would try something like that - somewhere which will have a shower block like a campsite/hostel etc and just phone and ask if you can pay to use it.

Otherwise as others have suggested train stations/ service stations etc often have showers, or if you are in a more touristy type town you might find a shower facility available for public use somewhere with a bit of googling.
