To book a hotel just so I can have a shower?

In the middle of bathroom renovations. Now been ten days without a bathroom. We have a toilet we can flush with a bucket đŸ¤¢but that’s all.

Ive been strip washing in the kitchen every day so I know theoretically I am not dirty but I feel disgusting. I’ve managed to wash my hair once in the sink, not that successfully and that feels minging too.

A cheap hotel for a night (eg two days of showering!) would be at least £50 and really can’t afford it (bathroom gone way over budget), but we have at least another week of this and I’m not sure I can bear it!!

Hosepipe in the garden?

I've not read all the replies so apologies if it's already been mentioned...

Rather than join a gym or faff booking a trial session have look at hussle.com and just book a day pass for a cheap gym near you. Its good because you can get day passes for gyms that dont usually offer day passes. You can just breeze in through reception and they never ask you to book an induction session or whatever. I've done this before when I've had a works doo to go to. I live really far from where I work, didn't really know my colleagues that well and wanted somewhere to shower and get changed rather than drive the 2hr round trip for what would have been only 10 minutes at home to get ready. Think it was £3.50. The cheapest I can find now is £4.95.

I would seriously consider asking a neighbour. Maybe invite them into your home so that you know they are genuine. If a new neighbour asked that of me then I’d be more than happy to help them.

This is Mumsnet where people get offended if a visitor or tradesperson uses the toilet / I can't imagine the disgust people would show at someone using their shower Smile

You'd have to be incredibly stupid to offer someone unsighted, invalidated, off the internet, access to your home.

people aren't always who they say they are. What don't people get about safety first.

i despair of people's naivety on here.

Itchintobestitchin · 05/12/2022 03:55

My plumber fitted my bath in first so I was only one day without being able to wash properly, and he made sure the water supply was back on every evening before he went home. It was weird stepping over all the tools and half fitted units to get in my bath for the rest of the week but I was sincerely grateful.

Is there any chance your plumber could do something similar?

But surely, if it was a neighbour, where they prove to you where they live, then that’s ok.

yes, a random knocking at your door and asking for a shower isn’t good. 99% of people would say jog on. But if said (new) neighbour took you into their home to prove they lived there then why wouldn’t you help?

I do eyeroll sometimes at the variations of “I despair “ on here.

Ponderingwindow · 05/12/2022 04:14

I would do the hotel.

another option is to find a cheap haircut place and ask just for a hair wash. I did this once when I had a medical procedure that made showering or bathing off limits for a week and made sink hair washing at home highly risky. I could wash my hair, but under no circumstances could any water touch my shoulders or back. I felt so much better with a proper hair wash, despite not being allowed any body washing beyond a damp washcloth on the key parts.

We booked into a very local Premier Inn for the 10 days it took to do our bathroom. We had a camping loo here for the days, and after dinner drove to the hotel for shower and bed. Another shower when we got up, and back home for the day in time for breakfast. It worked well for us.

It worked well for you but OP barely has the money for 1 night’s stay let alone 10 nights.

Twiglets1 · 05/12/2022 05:03

YANBU and I think I would do the same! It will be so good for your morale.

TenoringBehind · 05/12/2022 07:23

I’d go to the local swimming pool and just shower not swim, if there are no other options,

I’ve had showers at friends houses (and returned the favour here at various times over the years) when we’ve been without a bathroom or hot water.

supamummy · 05/12/2022 07:41

Where abouts are you. Message me I'm near Heathrow. You can use my shower

Havehope21 · 05/12/2022 07:53

Years ago our shower broke and we rung our local premier inn who agreed to let us use one of their rooms for the afternoon. We turned up, had a shower and went to pay - they refused and said that they were glad to have helped. Maybe give them a call if you live nearby and explain the situation (we had also stayed at a few premier inns so said were loyal customers - which was true!).

Campervangirl · 05/12/2022 08:06

I'd knock on a neighbours door, wouldn't care if I didn't know them, I've got no shame tho!
I'd explain and ask if I could be cheeky and have a shower.
If a new neighbour knocked on my door and said they'd not had a bathroom for a while and needed a shower, I'd crack out the guest towels

PeloFondo · 05/12/2022 08:12

If you can't sort a shower, a hairdresser will usually do a hair wash for v cheap (pick a local small one)
When I had an op on my arm and couldn't wash my hair, they did mine twice a week for free (and I'm not a big spender at that hairdresser!)

Blowthemandown · 05/12/2022 08:16

Our pools both have mixed communal showers so can’t really take your suit off and shower properly. Day rooms or day spas might be the answer here.

LIZS · 05/12/2022 08:23

Some motorway service stations have showers. Ask a neighbour/friend? Swimming pool/leisure centre? Maybe ask on fb which local one is cleanest.

MorrisZapp · 05/12/2022 08:28

Been there, though my lovely sister let me use hers.

To me, the absolute worst part was brushing my teeth at the kitchen sink. Inexplicably vile.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 05/12/2022 08:38

Is there a car wash in your area, the whole family can get a shower for about £3. (Don't select the wax finish though, but definitely take the drying option.)

catlovingdoctor · 05/12/2022 08:49

Yanbu...I've done exactly the same thing when our boiler broke. I couldn't be arsed with the faff of having to trek to a centre / pool / someone else's home just to get clean so I stayed for a couple of nights in a hotel.

Ericaequites · 05/12/2022 08:54

Go to your local public gym, pool, or leisure center that has single gender changing rooms and showers. The worse thing you can catch is verrucas.

Ugh I hate too.

Any chance you’re near a major railway station? Some of them in London and other cities have showers.

Airbnbs and hostels might be cheaper than a hotel.

I'm intrigued at the notion that some railway stations and motorway services have showers.

It’s a legal requirement for motorway service stations to provide showers for HGV drivers. Then I think availability to general public is up to the services.
